TSC PROMOTIONS 2021
The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, will now conduct Promotions and transfer of teachers. This is after the Commission launched a new E-platform for teachers. Consequently, effective March 1, 2021 there will be no manual applications for promotions, transfers and recruitment of teachers in the Country.
Via a circular by TSC boss Dr. Nancy Macharia and which is dated February 15, the Commission directs teachers to activate their emails by April 30th this year.
“The exercise of activating the emails takes effect from February 15 and will close on April 30. Upon the expiry of the registration window, all emails outside the e-platform shall not be acted upon,” the circular reads in part.
How the new TSC E-platform will assist teachers
The new platform will be used by all teachers employed by the Commission; including those on Internship. According to TSC, the new e-platform will be used for official emails, virtual meetings and remote learning. This will see official letters, Circulars, Pay-slips and responses to teachers’ inquiries among others done online.
These latest developments come at a time when TSC has completed digitizing teachers’ files at the head quarter offices in Upper Hill, Nairobi.
Teachers seeking transfers will now file their applications online as opposed to the manual application process.
A number of other TSC services that have now been fully digitized. These include: applications for promotions, applications for employment and new teacher registration among others.
All Heads of Institutions and teachers including those on internship are required to activate their email accounts provided on the platform and use it for all communications to the Commission. The official email will take the format of the teacher’s name, the last two digits of the TSC number @mwalimu.tsc.go.ke.
In addition to an official personal account, heads of institutions are to open a separate head-of-institution email. This address will be available to subsequent heads of institutions for continuity.

TSC MINET APPROVED SERVICE PROVIDERS (HOSPITALS) IN VIHIGA COUNTY
The AON Minet medical scheme for TSC teachers is on the spotlight over concerns of provision of poor services. This is after the Kisumu County Woman Representative RoseNyamunga petitioned the Senate to dig deep into the scandal-ridden multi-million medical cover.
Below is the petition by Hon. Nyamunga;
Pursuant to standing order No. 47, I wish to rise to make a statement under the topic Humiliation faced by teachers under AON MINET medical insurance
Mr. Speaker,
The teachers of this country are a frustrated lot and they feel their lives have been subjected and potentially endangered by the poor AON MINET Kenya medical insurance cover. Quality, accessible and affordable healthcare is a right to every Kenyan. However, the teachers have alleged that the services offered by AON MINET are not only poor but also too restrictive to benefit them.
Mr. Speaker,
Some of the issues raised by teachers of this country with regards to the services they get include;
Very low capitation on outpatient services e.g some capped at as low as ksh. 900 inclusive of doctor’s consultations, tests and drugs.
Restrictions on the hospitals to visit..some of which they claim are not well equipped .
Delays in approvals which sometimes last upto one month…considering that this is about the lives of teacher, it is really absurd.
There are cases where hospitals have turned away teachers insured by AON MINET because of the challenges they face while laying claim .
Some facilities that are approved by AON MINET lack qualified personnel
Some health facilities such as Bliss operate only between 8am and 5pm which therefore, makes it difficult for teachers who fall ill at night to get help
On dental services, only tooth extraction is catered for by AON MINET. Other crucial services like cleaning, refilling, root canalling, tooth replacement are not taken care of.Bottom of Form
Mr. Speaker,
Considering that teachers are playing a crucial role in shaping up the future generation of this country, it beats logic why they cannot get the best of health services available.
The idea to introduce a medical cover for teachers was very good because it was a step in the right direction. However, there appears to be glaring gaps and challenges that must be addressed by the employer immediately.
Mr. Speaker,
The same teachers are facing double deduction both by NHIF and AON MINET yet, despite the significant deduction on they pay slip, there are no commensurate services.Bottom of Form
Mr. Speaker,Bottom of Form
If we cannot treat our teachers with dignity then we have lost it as a country because it is the same teachers who handle the future generation of this country. When a teacher is frustrated, the trickle-down effect will definitely affect our children.
Mr. Speaker,
With the global pandemic and the announcement about the reopening of schools, it is prudent that the Teachers Service Commission address some of these concerns raised by the teachers of this country. The fear of second wave of the virus is real and our teachers must feel safe too.
Finally,
Mr. Speaker,
It behooves any government to offer quality and affordable healthcare to her citizens. The president on the Big Four Agenda had a good intention of ensuring that healthcare is not only made accessible but also affordable and of the highest quality. It is my hope that the Teachers Service Commission will address these concerns raised by teachers.

Are you intending to pursue a Diploma in Primary Teacher Education(DPTE)? Well. You should realize that the Kenyan Government has since abolished the P1 Training Course and replaced it with DPTE. This new course comes with new joining requirements.
The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has set minimum requirements for teachers. For you to be considered for employment as a primary teacher in Kenya, you have to satisfy all the following TSC requirements for primary teachers.
Be a Kenyan citizen.
Hold a PTE Certificate (P1 certificate) from KNEC Or.
A Bachelors of Education degree (Primary education) from a university recognized by the government of Kenya (with 2 teaching subjects.).
You must be registered with the TSC and have a TSC number according to the specifications of the TSC Act Cap 212, Section 23(1) at the time of application.
If you lack the physical TSC registration certificate (perhaps you’re yet to receive it), make sure that you attach a printout of your TSC number application (as made online) showing the verified status.
This is taken to be evidence that you have met the basic requirements to be registered as a primary teacher in Kenya.
A word on primary teacher training and job groups in Kenya
Please note that the government has abolished the P1 certificate and replaced it with a Diploma Training program for primary school teachers.
Subsequently, new primary school teachers are now being employed under job grade B5 and not the older job group G as it has been the tradition for fresh P1 teachers.
Other grades, starting with J, K, L, M, and N, have been renamed C1, C2, C3, C4, and C5 in that order.
TSC requirements for primary teachers – Frequently asked Questions [FAQs]
When will TSC employ new teachers?
It’s not clear the exact dates but TSC employs new teachers every year.
There is usually a major recruitment exercise where thousands of teachers are hired then a few others across the year where the TSC fills positions left vacant by teachers who have left the service through natural attrition.
Can I apply online?
Sure, the TSC online teachers recruitment portal is always on and you can upload your documents there and wait if the advert has a position you qualify for.
Note that a hard copy application to the commission is not necessary if you apply online.
What is the age limit for TSC employment?
As previously mentioned, the maximum age for you to get employment as a teacher in Kenya is 45 years.
But under TSC act 2012, TSC sometimes hires those over 45 years in contract terms.
Those engaged under contract can only serve up to 65 years of age.
How many teacher has the TSC employed in Kenya?
The number of TSC teachers in Kenya stands at slightly above 220000 primary school teachers and 105000 tutors in the local secondary schools.
Does TSC employ special needs teachers?
Yes, they do (keep checking their adverts on the website to know when they have openings).
And the good thing is that all you need is to have undergone special needs education (for the visually and hearing impaired) in an accredited institution.
You, of course, have to meet the other requirement for primary teacher including the age limit.
