Gusii Mwalimu SACCO office closed for flouting Covid-19 guidelines

The Gusii Mwalimu SACCO’s office has been closed for flouting the Ministry of Health’s guidelines on prevention of the deadly Coronavirus Disease (covi-19). The order to close the office, that is located in Kisii town at the Mwalimu Building, was issued by the Kisii County’s Department of Health and Sanitation.

“Due to the outbreak of (Covid-19) corona virus in the Country, it has come to the attention of the public health office that the SACCO shareholders are congregating with full disregard of the Presidential directive and MOH (Ministry of Health) advisory against the same,” says Hezron Omayio who is the Public Health officer in Kisii county.

Failure to observe social distancing by the teachers has been cited as the main reason that prompted the local authorities to take the drastic action.

Its sister SACCO, Mwalimu National, has since asked members to embrace mobile money banking and has at the same time adjusted the opening and closing hours.

The local health office observes that the teachers are gathering at the Mwalimu building and without wearing face masks hence may aid in the spread of the virus. “You are therefore required to stop operations as a mitigation measure to curb against the spread of the virus,” says Omayio warning that failure to comply would lead to legal action.

Kisii County reported its first ever Corona virus case on Tuesday April 7, 2020.

KANGUBIRI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The school stands on the former Aguthi Works camp, built during the emergency as a detention camp. The officer incharge would tell the detainees that their coming to Aguthi works camp signaled their freedom hence he would tell them “come go free”. The local people corrupted the saying and talked of “Kangubiri” hence the school acquired its name Kangubiri Girls High School.

On the advent of the independent Kenya, the divisional leaders pointed out that higher education for girls was a matter of urgency. Kangubiri Girls High School was therefore started on ‘harambee’ basis and was registered in June 1965.

The first class of forty girls arrived on 20th June, 1965. In 1971, the school was granted boarding status. In 1976 a second stream was started and in 1977 the school was granted a form 3 aided class to cater for KJSE students who wanted to proceed to form 3. In 1980, the third government stream was granted thus making the school four streamed. Kangubiri is a four streamed Extra County Boarding girl’s school with a student population of about 870.

2020 KSSSA Secondary Schools games rules

The Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) has maintained that all students participating in Secondary school games must be under 19 years old. According to the body that runs Secondary school games in Kenya, the ruling by the High Court, that declared age limit ceiling rule in school championships will not be observed during KSSSA run activities. KSSSA Secretary General David Ngugi had warned that the court’s decision would see the comeback of ineligible players (mercenaries). Kenya will risk missing out on the East Africa games if the age rule cap is lifted. In June 2019, Justice Eric Ogola had ruled that section 17 (iii) of the KSSSA constitution discriminates students who are aged above 19 years noting that provisions of the constitution of Kenya outlaw any discrimination in public bodies or institutions. A KSSSA full council meeting held in Nairobi this week has put the matter to rest thus quashing those opposed to the age rule cap.

KSSSA RULES

In 2019, the Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association (KSSSA) limited the number of foreign players to be included in a school’s team. KSSSA had allowed schools to add a maximum of 4 foreign players to their teams and all these players can be fielded at the same time. But, for other team games (basketball, hockey, Rugby, volleyball, netball, and handball) schools would be allowed to include a maximum of three foreign players; with only two featuring for the team during a match at a time. KSSSA also limited the number of players that a school can transfer from another school. Consequently, no school would be allowed to transfer more than 2 players from another (same) school. At the same time, the Ministry had also put a ceiling on the number of participants per team as shown below:
  1. Swimming- 15 participants
  2. Badminton- 6
  3. Hockey- 20
  4. Basketball- 12
  5. Cross Country- 6
  6. Volleyball- 12
  7. Netball- 14
  8. Handball- 14
  9. Rugby 7’s- 11
  10. Rugby 15’s- 20
  11. Athletics- 2 per event
  12. Soccer- 20
  13. Table Tennis- 6
  14. Lawn Tennis- 4
