Kenya has four new confirmed cases of coronavirus as at Sunday March 29, 2020. Of the new infections, one is Kenyan Kenyan and three foreigners. Kenya now has 42 confirmed cases.
Here is the full presser by Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe;
UPDATE OF CORONAVIRUS IN THE COUNTRY AND RESPONSE MEASURES AS AT 29th MARCH, 2020
Fellow Kenyans, Welcome to the daily update on the current status of Coronavirus disease outbreak in Kenya. As of yesterday the global figures stood at 571, 678 of persons who have tested positive for Coronavirus while 26,494 have succumbed since the disease outbreak.
Yesterday alone within a period of 24 hours Italy reported 971 deaths while Spain recorded 769. The USA recorded a total of 16894 new cases with 252 deaths in a period of 24 hours.
This scenario reflects the possible outcomes we are likely to face if we are complacent with the measures the government has put in place.
In our situation, in the last twenty-four hours, a total of sixty nine (69) samples from suspected cases of Coronavirus have been analyzed in our various laboratories. Out of the 69 samples we have received confirmation of four (4) people who have tested positive for the Coronavirus disease. They include one Kenyan and three foreigners from America, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. This now brings to 42 the number of those who have tested positive for the virus in Kenya.
All the four confirmed cases three are from Nairobi and one from Mombasa. Nairobi Country continues to lead with 31 cases of those who have so far tested positive, followed by Kilifi with six, Mombasa with three, while Kajiado and Kwale with one each. Out of the 42 positive cases, 24 are male while 18 are female.
Tracing of contacts for the 42 confirmed cases is ongoing. The total number of close contacts that we are monitoring stands at 1426. Out of this number, 215 have been discharged after completing the mandatory 14 day follow up period. Currently, our teams are monitoring 919 close contacts. We have 18 individuals admitted at Mbagathi Hospital awaiting test results.
CS Mutahi Kagwe’s rallying call to all Kenyans.
To date we have tested 877 persons for the Coronavirus disease. Today our medical teams have embarked on mass testing for all those persons who arrived in the country last week, and are currently under mandatory quarantine in various designated hotels and Government facilities. These tests are based on dates of arrival, it is important that suspects will remain in quarantine for the full duration. However those who test positive will be taken isolation facilities.
The exercise will continue until all those in the facilities are tested. We want to appeal to all Kenyans to embrace this fight against coronavirus as opposed to assuming that it is a government affair, because it is not. It is very wrong for those who are misinforming the public on this matter.
For instance we have noted the misinformation doing the rounds in social media where a leader in this country is claiming there are over 7000 people in mandatory quarantine. This is not true.
For the record we have 2050 people currently in mandatory quarantine in all the hotels and government designated facilities. It is immoral and unethical for anyone more so a leader in the country to mislead people for whatever reasons they may have particularly with regard to the fight against Coronavirus.
Fellow Kenyans, we want to inform you that we are expanding our capacity for purposes of intervention measures particularly in the counties. We want to thank the private sector and other donor communities, who are working with the government through the ministry of Trade and industry and have been able to provide products such as masks and Protective Personal Equipment (PPE). As government, we have plans to ensure that in the next few weeks, we are able to manufacture some of these materials locally for self sustainability.
We want to appeal to our people to observe the curfew as one of the measures aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus. However curfew alone does not eliminate the spread of the virus but it is to slow down the transmission.
In the same vein we are urging employers to release their employees early from their work stations, so that they can reach their homes in good time. In the event they do not allow their employees to leave early then they should be prepared to accommodate them at their own cost.
We want to reiterate that Cargo flights from all over the world are no restricted but only passenger flights. As we conclude I want to reemphasize that hand washing is the best option to prevent the spread of the disease. I urge people to use soap and water as a first measure.”

KUCCPS Proposes to Introduce Career Assessments in Junior Schools
The Kenya University and College Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has suggested that school children be evaluated regarding their future career paths while in junior schools.
During the second annual CBC symposium held on Wednesday, April 23, Prof. John Oluoch, the Director for Placement and Career Development, emphasized that this initiative would afford ample time for planning the career trajectory of learners through the selection of appropriate subjects.
“The timing of career assessments is essential, particularly during the Junior School years when learners are clarifying their career aspirations. Assessments within this timeframe can assist in refining focus and enabling educational planning,” he remarked.
“By integrating these methodologies and recognizing the significance of assessment data, educators can proficiently aid learners in choosing senior schools and career pathways that align with their interests and skills. ”
His statements were supported by the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Central Careers, Joseph Muraya, who underscored the necessity of assessing learners prior to making career decisions.
He asserted that this would empower students to attain fulfillment in their future occupations with a greater probability of success, as they will have selected pathways that are more appropriately suited to their abilities.
He further urged the ministry to prioritize education concerning the pathways and placement criteria.
“Students who engage in personality assessments to explore suitable career options are more likely to discover roles that correspond with their strengths and interests, ultimately resulting in enhanced job satisfaction and success rates. The Ministry of Education must undertake increased sensitization and awareness initiatives regarding pathways and placement. ”
In the CBC system, senior secondary school students will need to select from three pathways that are more aligned with their career ambitions.
The three pathways are Arts and Sports, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), each of which will involve different subjects.
In the new framework, for instance, mathematics will only be mandatory for STEM students, a disclosure that has polarized the nation, with experts claiming that this move will have significant ramifications for the futures of the learners.
Nonetheless, students will have the opportunity to choose up to two pathways to expand their career possibilities.
The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has postponed the April 2020 Proficiency, Certificate and Diploma Examinations indefinitely. This following the directive by the Government for all learning institutions to close down to contain the spread of the current COVID-19 pandemic in the Country.
“The Kenya National Examinations Council wishes to inform you that the 2020 ECDE (Proficiency, Certificate and Diploma) Examinations scheduled to take place between 12th and 16th April, 2020 and the Diploma in Special Needs (SNE) Examination scheduled to be done between 12th and 23rd April, 2020 have been postponed until further notice,” reads a memo by Dr. Mercy Karogo who is the Knec Chief Executive Officer.

The order to suspend these examinations follows another one that postponed Business and Technical theory examinations that were scheduled to start on Monday March 23, 2020.
In the latest circular sent to all Sub County Directors of Education and Principals of Colleges offering 2020 ECDE and SNE Examinations, the Council Boss says new examination dates will be announced once colleges re-open. “The Kenya National Examinations Council shall review the directive from time to time and inform you of the new examination dates once colleges re-open. Kindly bring this information to the attention of all candidates registered for the 2020 ECDE and SNE examinations,” she adds.
Uncertainty continues to reign supreme as to when normalcy will ensue as the Government puts up a spirited fight against the lethal Coronavirus Disease.
The 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, has also been marginally affected with Knec postponing the uploading of the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) project marks for Group IV subjects. Knec had earlier set the deadline for uploading the projects’ scores and pictorial evidence for Milestone one to be 31st of March, 2020 while uploading of data for Milestone two would have been done between 15th June to 15th July, 2020. But, these deadlines now remain suspended until further notice.

The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has postponed examinations that were to kick off this month as a result of the CoronaVirus shutdown. This is after the government ordered for a total close down of all learning institutions across the country in order to curb further spread of the deadly virus. Consequently, the exams council has taken this drastic move ‘in compliance with the Presidential Directive on suspension and closure of all learning institutions to control and manage the spread of COVID -19 virus.’
Via a circular dated Monday March 16, 2020, Knec Acting Chief Executive Officer (Dr. Mercy Karogo) advises that ‘Business and Technical theory examinations scheduled to start on Monday, 23rd March, 2020 have been postponed until further notice.’
Here are links to the most important news portals:
But, according to Dr. Karogo, ‘Business and Technical Practical/Oral examinations scheduled to end on Friday, 29th March, 2020 shall continue as scheduled.’
‘The Diploma in Teacher Education examinations shall continue until Friday 20th March, 2020 and thereafter be postponed from Monday, 23rd March, 2020 until further notice,” She adds in the Circular.
This comes even as the fate of reopening of the closed institutions remains unknown as the Government puts up Spirited efforts to Control the Disease.
Dr. Karogo says ‘the Council shall review the directive from time to time and communicate when the postponed examinations will resume.’
The Council is yet to give an update on the fate of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations; more so, status on upload of the 2020 Project based milestone one marks and data considering the fact that the deadline for uploading the same (onto the Knec portal) is March 31, 2020 and schools have been closed down.
Did your KCSE examination and attained the minimum Kibabii University Entry Grade? Well. Congratulations on this your major achievement.
