How Knec standardizes KCSE scores and results

Every year the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) standardizes the scores in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations. KCSE Examination standardization is a mathematical process that is designed to remove variable elements from test scores and allow the candidates to be compared equally.

In other words, it is a way of giving equal value to the results of each test, regardless of the number of questions and the time allocated for completing them. For instance, an A in Mathematics is much lower than an A in History and Government. Read more here; The latest KCSE grading systems for all subjects.

Why Knec standardizes KCSE candidates’ Raw cores to Standard Scores

Standardization of raw scores to standard scores in a Knec examination is a process that involves adjusting the raw scores for each paper in the examination to allow for the differences in difficulty and in the extent to which scores scatter/ spread between the best and worst performing candidate (standard deviation).

In the process of standardization, the difficulty among the papers is measured in terms of mean raw scores obtained by the candidates, while the differences in scatter are measured in terms of the standard deviation.

A raw score is a mark that is obtained by a candidate before standardization. It is the original mark obtained by the candidate in a test i.e., the number of correctly answered questions.

Related news; How to get KCSE 2020-2021 results via Knec SMS code and for whole school (See all KCSE results analysis and ranking)

For instance, if a candidate gets 90 marks out of 100 in a paper, then the raw mark for the candidate is 90. The mean raw score of a test is calculated by dividing the candidates’ total marks by the number of candidates taking the test.

The standard deviation of a score is measured by the number of units that score is from the mean score.

This process is done by using a computerized system.

In order to create a standardized score, a reference table called a ‘look-up table’ is created for each test paper that is written and the table is specific to that test paper because it takes account of the difficulty of the paper.

The minimum standardized score is derived from the look-up table and the actual number will vary, depending on the average score of all those taking the test.

The standard scores  are a measure of relative performance and have the ability to tell us how a candidate has performed in comparison to the other candidates. These scores are essential when results from different papers must be combined to give an overall total as is the case in the KCSE examination and are useful for comparing relative performance of candidates from subject to subject or from year to year.

Once the raw scores have been standardized, the cut-off scores for Grade A to E are identical for all subjects and therefore maintained at the same level from year to year.

The standardized scores are then used for reporting candidates’ performance.

Does standardization affect the candidate’s position?

When the scores are standardized the relative positions of the candidates remain unchanged; the top candidate in each subject still remains at the top.

The standard scores are essential if scores from several examination papers are to be added to give a total score. It is therefore desired that each paper should contribute equally to the total score.

Standardized test scores are scores that are obtained from a test that is administered and scored in a consistent, or “standard” manner.

Standardized tests are designed in such a way that the questions, conditions for administering, scoring procedures, and interpretations are consistent and are administered and scored in a predetermined, standard manner.

ST. GEORGE’S GIRLS’ SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The school started in 1986 as a Mixed Day School but later converted to a Girls’ Boarding School when the boys were relocated to Nairobi Milimani Secondary School.

The school population stands at 984 girls currently with 5 classes each. Our girls are mainly from Nairobi Province but about one-tenth of them are picked from the other 7 provinces. We are also hosting the UNICEF girls and Affirmative Action girls from marginalized districts. Our performance through the years has been very good in the KCSE KNEC Examinations.

St. George’s Girls school stretches back to 1884. The school was formally established in the following year, R.A. Shackleford becoming the school’s first principal. The school was named St. George, the patron saint of England and principally funded by St. George’s Church.

The school started off with an intake of 40 students. In 1888, increasing student enrollment led to classes being moved into the newly constructed bungalow.
In 1909, the British authorities took over the administration of St. George’s Girls school and renamed it the Government Girls School. Efforts were made to address the shortage of qualified teachers and the relocation of the school accommodate more students.

In 1911, the government Girls’ school was moved to Northam Road, and further expansion occurred with the acquisition of two bungalows. The British authorities also proposed in 1916 to turn the all-girls school into a co-educational school, but this idea id not materialize.

The administration of Government Girls, school was handed back to St. George’s Church in 1920, at which point the school’s name was reverted to its original name, St. George’s Girls School.

In 1954, the school was shifted once more to Macalister Road. The school has since been renowned for the consistent academic achievements of its students.

Nakuru Boys’ High School; KCSE Performance, Location, History, Fees, Contacts, Portal Login, Postal Address, KNEC Code, Photos and Admissions

NAKURU BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL LOCATION AND HISTORY

Nakuru High School is one of Kenya’s National Schools located in Nakuru Town, along Nakuru-Bahati Road,500M off Nakuru -Nairobi Highway. It borders Nakuru State House to the East. The school was founded in 1927 as Francis Scott High School but later renamed to Nakuru High School after Kenya attained independence in 1963.
The first stone was laid by the then colonial governor Edward William Macleay Grigg. It has roughly 200 acres of land at the foothills of Menengai Crater. Initially the co-educational institution was reserved for children of the whites who lived in the outlying farming areas and British administrators. All teachers, masters (as they were called at the time) were also white. First formed as a boarding school, it still allowed day bergs on condition that they lived around the school.
By the late 1950s, the school had grown to have a swimming pool, numerous rugby pitches, basketball courts, football pitches, hockey and cricket fields. The school also had well equipped learning resources. It had fully furbished classrooms, and science laboratories. Unique was the weather station where geography students took practical lessons. To keep up with its fast pace of growth, a large contingent of residential subordinate staff was employed.
After Kenya’s independence in 1963, gradual changes followed including being renamed and the first admissions of children of African origin. The first black students who pioneered entry to the school suffered harsh racial discrimination from students of Asian descent. In 1964 the school was opened to girls, making it the only national co-educational school in the whole country.

KITALE SCHOOL-SECONDARY’S BRIEF HISTORY

It was in 1908 when White settlers on the slave route to Uganda and Tanzania decided to rest their sweaty faces and tired backs at Quitale (now Kitale)-later established as a town in 1920.

Nine years later, early missionaries started Kitale primary school which targeted privileged children of White settlers. Later the school expanded to accommodate a mixed secondary school with the first batch of students enrolling in 1986.

Less than a decade later, in 1993, the male students were phased out, leaving behind girls and it remained a girls’ boarding secondary school.
The school sitting on a 109-acre piece of land, just two kilometers from Kitale town, Trans-Nzoia County, changed its name to Kitale School on September 27, 2014, an event which coincided with the school’s 85th-anniversary celebrations.

Notable alumni of the primary and secondary sections include; Kiprono Kittony, currently the chair of the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry and former chair of Radio Africa Ltd and Media Owners Association. Television business journalist, Terryanne Chebet, studied the scrapped business education (BeD) here and social media consultant Linda Obilo strolled in dark brown skirts as she sang the “Persevere” motto.
Others are Ika Angelei, who was honored by White House with the Goldman Environmental Prize for her environmental activism on Lake Turkana, the Stanchart South Africa CEO Richard Etemesi and former Kenya Commercial Bank CEO Terry Davidson.
It was at Kitale School too that radio journalist Joshua Arap Sang schooled. Sang, whose case at the ICC was terminated recently, schooled among the last cohort before the status of the school changed and the boys were kicked out.
