Gusii Mwalimu SACCO office closed for flouting Covid-19 guidelines

The Gusii Mwalimu SACCO’s office has been closed for flouting the Ministry of Health’s guidelines on prevention of the deadly Coronavirus Disease (covi-19). The order to close the office, that is located in Kisii town at the Mwalimu Building, was issued by the Kisii County’s Department of Health and Sanitation.

“Due to the outbreak of (Covid-19) corona virus in the Country, it has come to the attention of the public health office that the SACCO shareholders are congregating with full disregard of the Presidential directive and MOH (Ministry of Health) advisory against the same,” says Hezron Omayio who is the Public Health officer in Kisii county.

Failure to observe social distancing by the teachers has been cited as the main reason that prompted the local authorities to take the drastic action.

Its sister SACCO, Mwalimu National, has since asked members to embrace mobile money banking and has at the same time adjusted the opening and closing hours.

The local health office observes that the teachers are gathering at the Mwalimu building and without wearing face masks hence may aid in the spread of the virus. “You are therefore required to stop operations as a mitigation measure to curb against the spread of the virus,” says Omayio warning that failure to comply would lead to legal action.

Kisii County reported its first ever Corona virus case on Tuesday April 7, 2020.

Do not visit TSC offices, you are on leave- TSC told

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has given teachers an indefinite leave following the closure of all learning institutions countrywide. On Monday Monday, the Education Cs directed that all learners to stay at home after more cases of Corona Virus were reported in the Country. On Sunday, the president directed that all schools, colleges and universities be closed to prevent further spread of the pandemic.

“You are directed to remain at home during this period of corona virus epidemic,” reads a Circular from one of the TSC’s field officers.

“During the period you are NOT supposed to visit TSC Headquarters, TSC County Office or TSC Sub-County Offices unless the matter that takes you to those offices is of emergency in nature,” adds Nkoroi J.M who is the TSC County Director in Nakuru County.

Already, most schools have released learners to their homes until further notice.

“Teachers should spearhead a leading role in sensitizing parents on preventive
measures of COVID – 19,” says the Commission’s Boss Dr. Nancy Macharia through a circular dated Monday March 16, 2020.

According to Dr. Macharia, the Commission will be offering limited services. However, we have dedicated hotlines through which critical services will be offered. Safaricom- 0722208552, Telkom:0777208552, Email:info@tsc.go.ke.

Teachers will however continue receiving assistance on issues related to their medical insurance services. “It is important to note that the medical service providers’ hotline remains 1528, while the mobile number is 0730604000,” adds Macharia.

She has at the same time urged parents to ensure their kids are engaged throughout this period.

Uncertainty continues to rock the whole world as countries grapple with best ways to curb the spread of the virus.

On Monday, the Education CS provided guidelines on how the learners would be handled between their schools and homes so as to protect them from contracting the virus. The government was forced to take the drastic action to prevent them from any possible exposure to the virus while at school.

The Commission has also suspended all interview sessions for teachers seeking promotions.

The Government has banned all public gatherings in a bid to put the deadly virus at bay.

The CS is in record saying this year’s national examinations will not be post-poned.

He has also restated that schools will remain closed till June 4 and that the Government will review the situation before advising the public of the next step regarding the start of second term.

The Ministry is currently providing online learning services to learners across the country via a number of digital platforms.

“The content for online learning for the national curriculum is available on the KICD website and radio lessons are available for free,” Magoha says adding that the service is available to all learners.

He however says the government is making all it can to ensure all learners have the necessary gadgets to attend to the online lessons.

The Ministry has lined up a huge budget of about Sh20 billion to be utilized once schools reopen. Cases of learners being turned away in the last minute for failing to be registered for the exams have been reported in the past.

Confirming registration details is also key as it provides candidates with an opportunity to ensure their names, gender and subjects are accurate. In the past, candidates have been forced to sit for subjects they did not wish to undertake.
