Edit KCSE, KCPE details for 2020 candidates- KNEC tells schools

The Kenya National Examinations Council has told schools to edit candidates’ data so as to avoid errors on their details. According to the latest circular to schools, data for the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) candidates should be edited by 15th March, 2020.

“Sub County Directors of Education in-charge of private centres, Heads of Primary and Principals of secondary schools are informed to log into the registration portal using their credentials and edit the data by 15th March, 2020,” says Dr. Mercy G. Karogo (the Acting Knec Chief Executive Officer).

Karogo says the registration portal has been activated for the editing of the 2020 KCPE and KCSE registration data and photographs.

“Errors on registration data noted earlier during the verification process should be corrected online and nominal rolls printed for final verification,” she adds.

The editing process will not allow insertion of new candidates or deletion of candidates and any requests on the same should be communicated officially to KNEC by submission of letters and registration requirements by 16th March, 2020.

The registration of candidates for the 2020 KCPE and KCSE examinations ended on 15th February, 2020. Close to two million candidates have been registered to sit for this year’s national examinations. According to statistics released by the Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, 1,938,667 candidates will sit for the final primary and secondary examinations in 2020. Of this number some 751,150 candidates will sit the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations while 1,187,517 others will sit the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examinations.

The order to suspend these examinations follows another one that postponed Business and Technical theory examinations that were scheduled to start on Monday March 23, 2020.

In the latest circular sent to all Sub County Directors of Education and Principals of Colleges offering 2020 ECDE and SNE Examinations, the Council Boss says new examination dates will be announced once colleges re-open. “The Kenya National Examinations Council shall review the directive from time to time and inform you of the new examination dates once colleges re-open. Latest Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) news in Kenya: Nairobi leads as more males are infected- Full details

Kenya’s Capital City, Nairobi, leads in the number of patients with Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19). This is according to the latest reports that were released by Kenya’s Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe on Saturday. The CS said Seven more people had tested positive of coronavirus bringing the total to 38. Of the seven new cases four are Kenyans, two Congolese and one Chinese. “Out of the seven, four had a history of travel from countries with active transmission, one had traveled to Mombasa while two did not have a history of travel,” noted the CS.

According to CS Kagwe, Nairobi Country leads with 28 cases of those who have so far tested positive for the contagious virus. Nairobi is followed by Kilifi with six patients, Mombasa with two, while Kajiado and Kwale have one each. Out of the 38 positive cases, 21 are male while 16 are female.

The CS said the Government through the Ministry is leaving no stone untouched in its bid to curtail further spread of the virus. “Tracing of contacts for the 38 confirmed cases is ongoing. The total number of close contacts who have been monitored stands at 1141. Out of this number, 163 have been discharged after completing the mandatory 14 day follow up period,” he said.

Currently, the Ministry of Health is monitoring 978 close contacts. Three individuals are admitted at Mbagathi Hospital awaiting test results and 833 have been tested so far. The CS said, as a precautionary move, the Government instituted mandatory quarantine for those who have tested positive and their contacts because of the seriousness of the coronavirus disease and its potential strain on the Country’s healthcare resources. So, what happens in case you are identified as a CoronaVirus patient’s contact? “Once you have been identified as a contact to a patient who has tested positive, the Ministry of Health shall send its officials to your house to escort you to a quarantine facility,” explained the CS.

“The purpose of mandatory quarantine is to have close monitoring of your wellbeing so as to safeguard your health and that of your family and the country at large,” he added.

he number of COVID19 cases in the United States has surpassed 110,000, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University(See image below). Italy comes in second with China taking third spot.
Latest Corona Virus Cases Per Country.
On the curfew that was effected on Friday, the CS had this to say; “I am appealing to our people to make it very unnecessary for them to engage with the police by staying at home. I am also urging the police that people must be treated humanely. Make it difficult if not impossible for the police to come into contact with you by just doing the right thing – stay at home. The number 659.59, as our curfew number should be a rallying call for all of us at this time”.
The CS had some good news, though. “The first patient and the third patient of the confirmed cases of coronavirus have tested negative on their first retesting and are awaiting for a repeat test which is scheduled after 48 hours. We remain hopeful that the repeat test will be negative confirming full recovery to allow for their discharge from our treatment centre”.
The Ministry will on Monday roll out mass testing for individuals in mandatory quarantine.
Kenyans are urged to follow the Ministry’s directives so as to effectively cut the infection chain. You are reminded to keep social distance, avoid public gatherings and washing hands with enough soap for about 25 seconds; among other precautions.

List of fake hand sanitizers in Kenya

Hand sanitizers have played a key role during the fight against the spread of the deadly covid-19 pandemic. The hand sanitizers are sprayed on hands and other surfaces so as to kill the corona virus. Public places such as the transport sector, government agencies and banks have largely benefited from these hand sanitizers.

There are a number of hand sanitizers manufactured locally and others imported. Before such a sanitizer is used it must be certified by the Kenya Bureau of Standards, KEBS, after thorough inspection. Certified commodities have a mark permit from KEBS.

Unfortunately, some sanitizers do not meet the minimum standard requirements. KEBS carries out factory inspections, product certifications and market surveillance activities to monitor the quality of products sold to Kenyans at varied points of sale. This is a bid to give an assurance to the public on the status of the products they purchase.

KEBS has therefore suspended use of 8 brands of hand sanitizers. See the table below for a list of the banned sanitizers:

S/NO SANITIZER NAME MANUFACTURER
1 Alphax Kings Palace, Ruiru
2 Clean essentials Virtuelle Products Limited, Nairobi
3 G&L Orange Pharma, Nairobi
4 Gentle Care Bidco Africa, Thika
5 Lili Kenbrands International Company, Nairobi
6 Msiri Mafleva International Limited, Nairobi
7 Shi Shi Natural Shi Shi Naturals, Nairobi
8 Spotless Advanced Harvana east Africa Trading, Nairobi

The manufacturers of these products should discontinue manufacturing or offering them for sale. They should also recall all these substandard sanitizers from the market.

TSC receives a public apology from the Standard Newspaper over the incorrect Interns’ news feature

The Standard Newspaper has apologized to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, over an erroneous feature that it published about teacher interns; last week. The story caused frenzy amongst the teaching circles as it reported that the interns (who were employed late lats year) had been offered permanent and Pensionable terms.

“In our Friday’s issue of The Standard, we carried a story indicating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed 8,141 tutors on permanent and pensionable terms. We have since established that this is the number of intern teachers hired.
The Commission has, however, recruited 8,920 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms,” reads a presser by the Standard.

“TSC targeted to hire 10,300 interns and 9,069 teachers. Consequently, the commission is still processing 2,159 interns who will soon be put on payroll. Also being processed are 149 teachers to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. We apologise to the commission for the error,” the Standard added.

TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.

The Commission on Friday dismissed the report by the Standard terming it unfortunate. “It has come to my attention that the hardcopy edition of today’s Standard newspapers has reported that TSC had hired 8141 intern teachers on permanent basis. I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate. The same is being addressed,” said TSC’s Head of Communications, Beatrice Wababu.
