How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.

1. How you can Choose a Career Pathway:

  • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
  • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
  • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.

2. Select Subject Combinations:

  • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
  • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.

3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

  • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
  • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
  • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

  • Spacious skills lab
  • Orthopaedic workshop
  • Modern medical engineering workshops
  • Medical laboratory for skills training
  • Spacious adequate classrooms
  • Student hostels
  • Dining hall

Student Population

The current student population stands at 961, with more expected to join the Campus in coming years.

Clinical Experience Sites

Our students have their skills further developed in various practical areas, majorly the Kisii County Referral and Teaching Hospital. Other county and sub county hospitals within the country also serve this purpose, same as rural demonstration health centres identified.

Clubs, Societies and Clubs

Various sporting activities exist in the Campus as well as the infrastructure to support them. These include playing fields for football, volley ball, handball, basketball and netball. The Campus does exceptionally well in indoor games notably table tennis, badminton, chess, darts and scrabble.

We understand that physical exercise is vital during developmental milestones of both the brain and body. Therefore, we periodically organize interfaculty competition in identified sports, where the students compete amongst themselves and winners rewarded.

Make Retirement Scheme Mandatory For All Civil Servants – Gov’t Told

The Association of Pension Trustee and Administrators of Kenya (APTAK) wants the government to make pension schemes mandatory for all Kenyans to encourage the culture of saving.

Kili said the social security fund should be made a mandatory requirement by urging Kenyans to save just as the government did with the medical sector on the National Health Insurance Fund.Speaking during the 1st annual International APTAK conference on Wednesday, President of the Association Hosea Kili said that many Kenyans face poverty upon retirement as they fall short of adequate savings.

“We are currently pushing the government to do for the pension sector what happened in the health sector where saving for universal health is mandatory. If all Kenyans were covered in pension arrangements, at least a portion could have been withdrawn by some members to cushion them during the time of Covid-19. The Number of registered pension beneficiaries is not promising because of the voluntary nature of the system. Only 20 per cent of the employed citizens save, the rest who are unemployed are nowhere to be seen,” said Kili.

He said there are at least 1,400 pension schemes in the country and added all these are voluntary thus encouraging members of the public to join them for the betterment of their future when they retire.

“We expect to have universal social security coverage, but for now we are encouraging people to save more money on the pension scheme and not only investment but the membership will go up to 25 per cent, but if the government intervenes, it will be 100 per cent,” he said.

Kili noted that during the pandemic, the pressure was so high that a big number of the small schemes were heavily affected when some companies laid off staff and members came for their money.

“This has actually given us a lesson that in future we may need to have another saving arrangement which is tailor made and not for retirement but for managing crises,” added Kili.

Kili said the association will also ask other schemes to come up with insurance for covering the crisis, a discussion that will be posed during the conference.

Issues of importance to be discussed during the conference include; the impact of Covid-19 on the resources and assets of the pension scheme, some employers ceased employment and stopped contribution, many people lost employment and claimed their pension benefits.

The reaction to the changes where members were working from home and how members were taken care of, intervention of digital technology to provide services to members, among others.

Promotion letters for TSC teachers

Every teacher working with the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, yearns for a promotion; that comes with increased allowances, salaries and even new responsibilities. Once promoted a teacher receives a promotion letter which details the new job grade, salary scale and allowances.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, introduced the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) for teachers in 2017. These Career Progression Guidelines outline the academic and professional criteria for teacher career advancement. The guidelines link a teacher’s career progression, to his/her performance and professional conduct.

Under these Career Guidelines, promotion of teachers is subject to the following conditions:

i. existence of funded vacancies in the approved establishment;
ii. attaining minimum qualifications per grade;
iii. pursuing relevant Teacher Professional Development(TPD) modules;
iv. having relevant Experience; and
v. giving satisfactory performance.

Related news:

HOW A TEACHER CAN GET PROMOTED BY TSC.

Promotion of teachers is done in three different ways:

  • Promotion on common cadre establishment
  • Promotion through Teacher Proficiency Course (TPC)
  • Promotion through competitive selection

 Promotion on common cadre establishment

This applies to a category of teachers who may move from one job group to another without the need for a competitive selection process or availability of vacancies, provided they meet the minimum qualifications for the grade.

This involves teachers in Job Group J (C1), K (C2) and L (C3). Promotion from Job Group J to K and K to L is done after three years satisfactory performance.

To get the common cadre promotion, all you need to do is to fill the TSC promotion form.

Read more news on the new teachers’ job groups, qualifications and responsibilities here.

In considering the promotion of a teacher under the common cadre establishment, TSC considers the following minimum conditions:

  • period of time served by the teacher in a given grade (Usually 3 years);
  • validity of the teachers’ teaching certificate; and
  • the teacher’s performance of duty.

Promotion through Teacher Proficiency Course (TPC)

This type of TSC promotion covers non-graduate teachers in Job Groups G (B5) and H (C1), who must undertake a Teacher Proficiency Course. This has since become defunct.

 Promotion through competitive selection

Promotion of teachers to Job Groups M (C4), N (C5), P (D1), Q (D2) and R (D3) is done through competitive selection. The Commission usually advertises for these vacancies after some time (subject to availability of funds). Interested and qualified applicants are then supposed to apply through the TSC online portal.

Shortlisting of applicants is done at the TSC headquarters. Names of shortlisted candidates for Job Groups M and N and guidelines are then forwarded to County Directors and Regional Coordinators who conduct the interviews at the county and Regional Levels; respectively.

In the latest TSC guidelines, appointment and deployment of of all primary school institutional administrators and all institutional administrators for county, sub county and day (secondary) schools are to be coordinated by the Regional Coordinator.

The regional selection panel shall have the regional director (who shall be the chair), the host county director (secretary), the host county Human Resource Officer and all other county directors from the region.

Similarly, the county selection committee shall be composed of: the county director (chairperson), host sub county director (secretary), the county Human Resource Officer and all other sub county directors from the county.

WHY TSC MAY FAIL TO PROMOTE A TEACHER

The Commission may refuse to consider a teacher for promotion if the teacher has not completed:

  • two (2) years from the date he was found guiltily following a disciplinary action; or
  • one (1) year from the date he was issued with an administrative warning.

You are now more informed on TSC promotions and letters. Feel free to share this great news to your friends.

A legislative proposal seeking to amend the Basic Education Act, 2013 is undergoing pre-publication scrutiny by the National Assembly Committee on Education.

The proposed Basic Education (Amendment) Bill, 2025, sponsored by Hon. John Waluke, seeks to enhance transparency by requiring non-teaching staff to declare their wealth and by aligning school audits with the Public Audit Act.

One proposed amendment would require non-teaching staff to declare their income, assets, and liabilities, as well as those of their spouses and dependents.

The Committee Members noted the misuse of funds particularly infrastructure funds in public schools. Hon. Nabii Nabwera advocated for a clear separation of financial and academic roles within schools.

“Let the teacher be the teacher, teach and manage the academics and we have a professional manager and a qualified administrator actually dealing with issues of money with schools, resources and procurement,” Hon. Nabwera stated.

The Committee questioned why a ministry allocates money to public schools that would be entrusted to individuals who may lack proper qualifications and are not held accountable by any regulations.

Hon. Eve Obara and Hon. Mary Emaase called on the Ministry to develop a mechanism to ensure accountability from bursars and other non teaching staff.

The Bill also seeks to mandate that school audits align with the Public Audit Act.

However, committee analysis pointed out that the Basic Education Act and the Public Finance Management Act already provide comprehensive frameworks for the audit and management of public funds, including penalties for non-compliance.

In the meeting, chaired by Hon. Julius Melly, the Committee also engaged representatives from the Office of the Auditor General on Performance Audit Reports for the Ministry of Education on Management of Development Funds for Technical Institutions, March 2018; the Implementation of the National School Upgrading Program, March 2018 and Expansion, Improvement and Maintenance of Infrastructure in Public Primary Schools by the Ministry of Education, November 2021.

CS Magoha in parliament, today: Full account of what he said

Emabakasi East Member of parliament, Hon. Babu Owino, has come under fire for ‘teaching’ with qualifications. The Law maker who has already run a mathematics lesson for KCSE students on his Facebook account has been warned that whatever he is doing is illegal.

The warning shot was issued by the education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang when he met with the Departmental Committee on Education on Thursday morning.

“Anybody who is offering to teach students without being qualified is undertaking an illegality, and so is anyone circulating e-learning information that is not approved by KICD..All the content of learning delivered to students must be Approved by the KICD, whether for online learning or physical learning. And every teacher must be Qualified,” said Dr. Kipsang.

The flamboyant politician is offering more lessons in coming weeks.

One of Babu Owino’s online lessons advertisement.

The Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha was however in support of schools and teachers charging parents for online services rendered.

“When it comes to charging of Online lessons offered by teachers, let them engage the parents and agree on favorable terms. I think there is nothing wrong with charging for services delivered,” the CS explained.

Brookhouse international school has been on the limelight for forcing parents to pay full fees even when much of the physical learning time has been lost due to the current closure of learning institutions to prevent further spread of Covid-19 disease.

E-learning is very new to me and you; but very necessary now.

The CS noted that the current E-learning is very new to him just like it is to everybody else but he was quick to point out that it can not be used to replace physical teaching.

“E-learning is just as new to me as it is to all of you. The gov’t has been very clear that when schools re-open, we will take it from where we left,” said the CS.

An assurance that was further emphasized by PS Kipsang.

“We can assure you that nothing we are doing now will replace the inter-personal relationships of learners and teachers, and when physical learning resumes, every child will still have an equal opportunity… We are trying to mitigate the impacts of this pandemic, and to deal with the new normal that we find ourselves in. We already have an emergency plan set up to improve the coping mechanisms.” reassured the PS.

“We are trying to mitigate the impacts of this pandemic, and to deal with the new normal that we find ourselves in. We already have an Emergency plan set up to improve the coping mechanisms,” he added.

Magoha defended the online teaching saying it was the only feasible option if going by the current crisis created by the covid-19 pandemic is anything to go by. He turned down a request by Nyamira County Women Representative who wanted to know if it is possible for the government to stop all these Online learning programmes so that all our children are equal when they resume physical learning.

“We do not advocate for teacher-learner contact even from home, since we do not what to put anyone at risk of infecting the other with COVID-19…The government at this time, will not consider stopping e-learning. Our children who are able to access the virtual learning will continue to get, despite others not being able to.

Related news

Dr. Kipsang on his part noted that the current e-learning system has its own shortcomings, though.

“This pandemic came at a time that we may have not prepared for all eventualities, that is why some of our Special Needs children might not have sufficient E-learning materials,” the PS explained.

Committee chair, Hon Melly, was concerned about ‘a majority of the Kenyan children who are not getting these online learning materials, and they are the majority.

The International Commission of Jurists, ICJ, has urged the government to provide learners with electronic gadgets and internet services.

But CS Magoha thinks otherwise.

“If you go to any secondary school, you will be shocked. It is only that we do not allow them. If we allowed them to carry phones to school, you will realise that all the secondary school students have smart phones,” stated Magoha.

On the safety of learners and teachers once learning resumes, the CS said an elaborate plan is in place.

“We will be following the Outlined COVID-19 guidelines when schools resume. And there will be a whole budget line to cater for this,” reported the CS.

It remains to be seen the plans that the Ministry has come up with ahead of the announced reopening date in June. On his part, the CS was quick to rule out any hasty decision in reopening the schools any time soon.

“It is too early to give any specific dates. In the meantime, the calendar for the national exams remains. If the situation changes, we will reopen schools… Our children are alive and safe at home. It is not only in Kenya where this pandemic is happening. If it means they will be staying at home for one year, then so be it. Don’t create a metal pipe and force me into it asking me to give you dates,” Magoha outlined.

TSC Expels 69 Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has taken disciplinary action against more than 100 teachers accused of abusing learners, as the agency intensifies efforts to root out sexual misconduct and immoral behavior in schools.

Appearing before the Senate Education Committee in Mombasa, TSC Director of Legal, Labour and Industrial Relations Cavin Anyuor, revealed that the commission has received 111 cases since January 2024, involving allegations such as sexual intercourse with learners, flirtation, molestation, lesbianism and pornography.

“Out of the 111 cases, 69 teachers were dismissed and deregistered, meaning they can no longer teach anywhere in the world. Their teaching licenses have been permanently revoked,” Mr Anyuor said.

Another nine teachers were dismissed, meaning they cannot work under TSC, although their licenses were not revoked. Twenty-five others were suspended, with the possibility of returning to service after the suspension period.

The official noted that the 25 suspended teachers may return to TSC depending on the length and outcome of their suspension.

The commission also dealt with one intern found guilty of misconduct and removed from the register.

“There is one intern teacher… even interns are not exempt. One went overboard and was also removed from the register,” Mr Anyuor added.

He further noted that four teachers were acquitted, having their interdictions revoked, while three cases were dropped after the implicated teachers died before facing disciplinary hearings.

“In four cases, the teachers were found to be innocent and their interdictions revoked. Three cases were cancelled because, by the time we called the teachers for disciplinary proceedings, they had passed away. That is how the 111 cases have been handled,” he said.

TSC has implemented a strict code of regulations outlining severe disciplinary consequences for offences involving learner abuse.

“Such cases attract the most severe punishment under the teacher discipline framework,” said Mr Anyuor.

He said that the TSC remains committed to protecting learners and upholding professional standards in the teaching service, assuring the public of a fair but firm disciplinary process in handling cases, particularly those involving abuse of learners.

Sexual abuse cases

Mr Anyuor added that all 111 cases received since January 2024 were handled through a “fair legal process backed by evidence.”

“Where evidence shows a teacher has no case to answer, we let them go. Not all are guilty — at least four were cleared and walked scot-free. We attempt to be fair but remain very firm on learner abuse,” he said.

He reiterated that learners are strictly prohibited from visiting teachers’ houses and urged immediate reporting of any violations or suspicions of misconduct.

To strengthen accountability, the official noted that TSC has enacted strict regulations and administrative circulars, including Circular No. 3 of 2010, which requires incidents of learner abuse to be reported within 24 hours. The circular also criminalises the suppression or concealment of such information by teachers.

The commission has enhanced reporting channels, establishing a free hotline and a public email address that enable anonymous reporting of sexual abuse cases.

“These platforms allow swift action, and one no longer needs to physically visit a school or TSC office to lodge a complaint,” he added.

Mr Anyuor said both state and non-state actors, along with members of the public, have embraced these digital platforms, significantly improving the commission’s response time and accountability.

To further protect whistleblowers, TSC has implemented an Integrity Policy that shields individuals reporting abuse or misconduct from retaliation or other negative consequences.

“There has been an increase in the number of cases reported by members of the public and stakeholders beyond the traditional communication channels,” he said

He noted that while some reports turn out to be fabricated or driven by internal school conflicts, many others raise genuine concerns that require urgent intervention.

He also revealed that the commission receives numerous anonymous reports of child abuse in schools, with some teachers accused of sexual exploitation attempting to interfere with investigations.

He reiterated that the TSC is committed to protecting learners and will continue to refine its legal and administrative frameworks to ensure all cases are thoroughly investigated and appropriate action is taken against offenders.
