MPs tasked with providing justification for the decision to deny promotion of teachers

The National Assembly Education Committee has been tasked with elucidating the rationale behind its decision to reject the recent promotion of over 25,000 teachers.

Led by Sabala Inyeni, Secretary General of the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Vihiga branch, KUPPET asserts that the Education Committee has engaged in unjust decision-making and has overstepped its mandate, thereby infringing upon the professional independence of the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Inyeni further stated that this action is unlawful and detrimental to the morale and career advancement of teachers nationwide.

This development follows closely on the heels of a recent instance in which TSC CEO Nancy Mcharia was questioned by lawmakers after announcing the promotion of 25,252 teachers across the nation and submitting the recommendation to the Education Committee for review.

The lawmakers raised concerns regarding the equity of the selection criteria and the geographical distribution of the individuals promoted.

However, KUPPET Vihiga officials accuse the MPs of exploiting the teachers’ recruitment and promotion processes for political advantage in anticipation of upcoming elections.
