Schools Receive Free Tree Seedlings

Center For Mathematics Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA) has donated tree seedlings to Ngenia Boys’ High school, Kiambu County to support the President’s initiative Programme of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.

The initiative will see the organization donate seed balls and tree seedlings to various schools across the country, which in turn become hubs that will support the surrounding communities and other schools to plant trees.

Speaking at Ngenia high School in Limuru Wednesday, one of the schools among the three in Kiambu that have been identified to benefit from the initiative, John Oyuga from CEMASTEA said they are working with various schools to implement the presidential directive and have since teamed up with the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) that is providing the seeds.

Oyuga explained that they have identified 3 to 8 schools in each county, where they are going to establish the nurseries and seedbeds, each with 10,000 seedlings and once this is done, the trees will be ready for distribution.

“We will be working with stakeholders, identifying the schools within their environment to come and collect seedlings depending on their need. The species have been identified per region, taking into account the climatic conditions,” he explained.

“Today we have brought 100 seedlings including acacia, japonica and Croton species from our CEMASTEA nurseries, he said, adding that they intend to establish a nursery hub with KEFRI packaging and they will be coming to the selected schools to establish seedbeds and nurseries.

The process, Oyuga explained, started this year under the performance contract for the financial year 2022/2023 and they want to plant 10,000 trees and even move further, hence the reason for establishing the nursery hubs in every County.

Once the nurseries are well established, they expect every community surrounding the schools to benefit from the programme.

The schools, he added, have the leeway to plant the number of trees they want and after distributing the seedlings to the community, they can sell the surplus at even half price for sustainability of the programme.

Another advantage of the Programme is that the teachers and members of the school community have the opportunity to be given seedlings to go and plant in their homes without buying because this is their nursery.

“Ngenia will be among three schools in Kiambu County that have been identified to grow the tree seedlings and we have been working with KEFRI in packaging the seeds for the schools selected to be hubs,” he said.

The seed species have also been identified according to the suitability of the area depending on the climatic conditions.

“We not only supply to the schools, but equally we make follow ups and we have already done some sensitization of the schools online on how they can carry out the exercise,” added Oyuga.

Ngenia boys Principal Paul Warutere lauded the initiative saying that once the 10,000 seedlings mature, their intention is to also transplant them elsewhere within the school compound.

“We are blessed to have 24 acres; thus we have space that will enable us plant very many trees. Over and above that, we also intend to sell and benefit some of the neighboring institutions as well as also donate some of those seedlings to them, so that they too can have an opportunity to plant trees,” he added.

The principal thanked CEMASTEA for the partnership saying it would help the institution in terms of sustainability and they will have enough seedlings to sell to the neighboring communities as well as church-based organizations.

“This is a very important event and activity in the long term as it will not only impact positively on our community, but God willing we will be able to give some of the same seedlings to our students so that they can also plant trees at their homes,” Warutere said.

He thanked CEMASTEA for not only helping them with seedlings, but also partnering and assisting them on biogas for schools as an alternative energy source.

“We initially had about five acres where we planted over 5000 trees and that has become our source of fuel. When we are cooking for the young fellows, we do not struggle with firewood,” he said.

Meanwhile, the donation of tree seedlings to the schools comes barely days after the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced a competition for schools based on the number of trees planted.

The CS said the initiative aims at encouraging schools to prioritize tree planting as a means to mitigate adverse effects of climate change and the ranking system to be used will be determined by the number of trees per institution.

A significant crisis in the education budget is imminent due to substantial cuts.

Millions of students in primary, junior, and senior schools are encountering a serious issue due to a substantial cut of Sh62. 01 billion in the Education budget.

Documents presented to Members of Parliament indicate a looming crisis due to reductions in funding for school feeding programs, exam supervision, and the construction of laboratories and classrooms for junior secondary education.

During a meeting of the Education committee led by Tinderet MP Julius Melly, Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok informed Members of Parliament that the National Treasury made the cuts on its own, without consulting the department.

‘No consultations’

He specifically cited Sh23 billion that the Treasury cut from the initial Budget Policy Statement passed by the National Assembly in February.

“I want to confirm that it is the National Treasury that reduced this allocation without consultations. We gave them the data [from the] National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) but with their own reasons they decided to reduce the allocation. They even reduced from what has been given in the BPS,” he said.

“The National Treasury need to answer this because some of this reduction cannot be explained, because we did our part in terms of the estimates and they went and did their own things without consultation.”

He added: “The reductions that have been received were done by Treasury unilaterally without engaging us. Whether we are having free primary and free secondary I think the answer is pure we have free primary and secondary although there are a few things need to be addressed.”

According to documents submitted to the MPs, the Free Primary Education vote has been reduced by Sh1.817 billion, with allocations cut from Sh9.7 billion to Sh7.9 billion, affecting 656,512 learners.

Of the Sh1.847 billion reduction, Sh1.2 billion comes from the Free Primary Education (FPE) capitation, while the remaining Sh700 million affects the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA).

Special-needs learners

The original Sh9.725 billion was intended to support 6.2 million learners funded at Sh1,420 per child, including a top-up capitation for 117,565 special-needs learners (SNE) who receive Sh2,300 each, and boarding fees for 39,056 SNE learners at Sh11,650 each.

For Free Day Secondary School Education (FDSSE), the shortfall amounts to Sh21.85 billion after the allocation was reduced from Sh76.73 billion to Sh54.88 billion, affecting 982,197 students under the program.

The Sh76.73 billion capitation was meant to finance 3.2 million secondary school students for Sh22,244 per learner and 9,243 SNE learners for Sh50,772 per learner.

In Junior School Education, the deficit amounts to Sh18.8 billion after the vote was reduced from Sh49.72 billion to Sh30.92 billion. This funding was expected to finance 3.28 million junior secondary school students at Sh15,042 per learner and 7,686 SNE learners at Sh50,772 per learner.

Bitok explained that the capitation required under junior school education for grades Seven, Eight and Nine is Sh49.7 billion to cater for an enrollment of 3.2 million learners in the 3rd term of 2025 and 3.3 million learners in the 1st and 2nd terms of 2026.

“Under the recurrent budget for the financial year 2025/2026, notable deviations between the proposed budget estimates and the ceilings provided in the approved Budget Policy statement. The Primary education program recorded a reduction of Sh1.847 billion,” he said.

He added: “Secondary Education program experienced a significant reduction amounting to Sh16.126 billion.

“The Primary cause of this deviations is the loss of capitation funding for junior school targeting Sh14.742 billion. Quality assurance and Standards program reflected a reduction of Ksh.5.327 billion.”

School feeding
The school feeding programme, which aims to provide meals to 2.6 million needy learners in the arid and semi-arid lands and urban slum areas for 180 days, has been slashed by Sh4.21 billion, from Sh7.21 billion to Sh3 billion.

“The ministry will not be able to achieve the target as a priority of the government,” Bitok stated.

The entire budget of Sh12.97 billion required for school examination and invigilation has been removed.

Edu Afya Medical Scheme: Public Secondary School Students Medical Cover Latest News

The medical scheme known as Edu Afya covers all students from Form One to Form Four who are in public institutions.

Edu Afya offers both Out-patient and In-patient medical covers.

Eligibility

  1. You must be a student in public secondary school.
  2. Be registered by NHIF through NEMIS database -The National Education Management Information System (NEMIS) is web-based data management that keeps data of learners.

Once a student registers at the NEMIS database, the data is automatically shared with NHIF. An appointment is booked for the student to avail his/her biometrics.

Outpatient benefits

Under Edu Afya, outpatient services are provided by a clinician/physician who is a licensed medical practitioner.

A student can be referred for a specialized outpatient service if need arises.

Specialized outpatient referrals include; renal and dialysis services, radiology, chronic ailments and cancer treatment.

Dental cover

Under dental cover a student will enjoy the following health benefits;

  • Tooth extraction
  • Root canal
  • Dental X-ray services

Optical cover

All expenses related to eye treatment are covered in Edu- Afya. They include; consultation, eyes testing, prescription and any optical related accident.

Life cover

In the event of demise of a patient, immediate family (next of kin) will receive a sum total of Ksh500,000

Inpatient Cover

Inpatient services are done on a referral basis from the selected outpatient Health Care Provider.

All hospital accommodation charges are catered for as well as pre-hospitalization diagnostic services.

All fees rising from doctor and nursing chargers are also catered for as well as drugs prescribed.

In case there is need for rehabilitation, operation or radiological diagnostic, NHIF through Edu Afya will cater for everything.

Emergency rescue services are also accorded to all students under Edu Afya medical cover. This includes both air and road rescue services.

Overseas treatment

In an instance where a student needs specialized treatment overseas, NHIF will cover all costs arising including travel logistics.

HOW THE SCHEME WORKS

Registration of beneficiaries

The EduAfya scheme offers comprehensive medical insurance coverage for students in public secondary schools registered with the National Educational Management Information Systems (NEMIS)

Reasons why all learners are not captured on Nemis.

  •  network issues,
  • the lack of internet technology (IT) and/or IT “savvy” to register students on NEMIS;
  • lack of birth certificates for some students;
  • keying errors resulting in invalid NEMIS numbers;
  • transmission lag of NEMIS numbers due to student transfers; and,
  • ultimately, low motivation on the part of school heads to lead registration of students to NEMIS.

Contracted facilities

Health facilities with existing NHIF contracts are eligible to provide services to students. No separate contract is issued for EduAfya.

NHIF guidance indicates that outpatient services are provided on a choice-basis at any contracted facilities.

Students access ward bed facilities for inpatient services in any accredited facilities. This
includes accredited mission/faith-based healthcare providers and accredited private hospitals, except for high-cost private facilities. Inpatient care is on a referral basis from the selected outpatient care facility.

Payment to facilities

EduAfya services are reimbursed on a fixed-fee-forservice basis. This ranges from KES1,000 to KES1,500 for out-patient and KES 1,500 to KES 4,000 daily rebate for in-patient services depending on the size of health facility and the NHIF contract.

Through discussions with providers, there was a sense that EduAfya rates were generally fair and better than what is provided for under other NHIF schemes, such as the national scheme’s capitation rate.

MPs question KUCCPS over funding and placement criteria for students to varsities

The Public Investments Committee on Education and Governance of the National Assembly, has questioned the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) and the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) over issues raised in a Special Audit Report.

The committee in a session chaired by Hon. Thuddeus Nzambia (Kilome), today expressed concern about the decision to sponsor students in private universities, even though public universities reportedly have enough capacity to admit all qualifying candidates.

Members of Parliament asked KUCCPS, led by CEO Mrs. Agnes Wahome, to explain why public funds were directed to private institutions without a clear policy.

“We must ask tough questions when taxpayers’ money is used to support private universities while public ones remain underutilized,” said Hon. Nzambia during the session.

Lawmakers also questioned the transparency and accountability of the placement process. They requested a breakdown of student placements by institution, capacity declarations from private universities, and systems for monitoring students after placement.

In response, Mrs. Wahome said KUCCPS had developed a digital platform and policy guidelines to help track student enrollment and placement. However, the committee insisted on receiving documented evidence.

The KICD was also questioned regarding financial mismanagement, including irregular procurement processes and unverified expenses. One notable concern was the printing of nearly one million French textbooks, despite the subject being taught in only a few schools.

“How do you justify such a glaring mismatch between supply and actual student needs?” asked Hon. Mumina, highlighting reports of book surpluses in some schools and shortages in others.

The committee called for better coordination between the State Department for Education and its agencies. A follow-up meeting with the Ministry of Education has been planned to address outstanding issues and discuss the way forward.

Additionally, MPs proposed reforms to give students more freedom to choose their preferred courses, rather than having them assigned by placement authorities.

Kuppet now has reservations on use of Secondary Schools as Covid-19 isolation Centres; Give demands

Secondary schools teachers have now developed reservations over the use of schools as Covid-19 quarantine centres. Through their representatives the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Kuppet, the tutors are demanding for ‘a review on the use of learning institutions as quarantine centres.’

“The government’s recent announcement that secondary schools around the country would be used as isolation centres has created widespread alarm. Many local communities are apprehensive that the use of institutions close to them will bring COVID-19 to their areas. Indeed, in some areas, local leaders have expressed opposition to the use of their schools to host people suspected of having COVID-19,” Kuppet Secretary General Akelo Misori via an internal memo dated April 7, 2020.

A number of schools, mostly in the secondary section, have been identified and prepared in all counties to be utilized as Covid-19 isolation centres; with the government directing that each county to have at-least 20 centres.

Whereas Kuppet says it has no objection with the move by the Government to utilize select schools, the union says all stake holders should be considered before such a move is implemented.
“To allay widespread fears and win over the trust of communities, the government must engage all stakeholders – including school Boards of Management, local leaders and teachers’ unions – in an honest, transparent and accountable dialogue about it intends to use the schools,” Misori advises.

KUPPET’S DEMANDS

Among Kuppet’s requirements is the suggestion that selected schools be used only to house persons isolated from health institutions within the county. Thus, there should be no cross county transfers of individuals supposed to be quarantined.

Below are other demands by Kuppet, as contained in the memo:

  • That Sub-County Directors of Education, Sub-County Directors of the Teachers Service Commission and Health officials will brief school Boards of Management, Principals and local
    union officials on the procedures to be used in isolation persons.
  • The principals, support staff and other persons who will come into contact with the isolated persons will be provided with sufficient protective gear, such as N95 masks, disinfectants, gumboots and gloves which they need to protect themselves from COVID-19.
  • The Ministry of Health will provide for the upkeep of the isolated persons in terms of bedding, food and other essentials. Where school resources are used for that purpose, the government will reimburse the institutions.
  • The Ministry of Health will avail officers to check on the health of the isolated persons on a daily basis and take infected persons to medical facilities as soon as their infection is proven.
  • Principals and other workers to handle the isolated persons will be taken through induction and be psychologically prepared for the intense work involved in handling COVID-19 patients and isolated persons. Such psychological support should also be provided at the end of the quarantine process.
  • Immediately the isolated persons finish their quarantine period, the Ministry of Health should comprehensively fumigate the institutions and sterilize all facilities the isolated persons shall have used during their stay in the institutions.

Kuppet’s latest move follows a dissenting opinion also raised by the sister union, Knut (Kenya National Union of Teachers). Last week Knut Boss Wilson Sossion rejected the proposal to use boarding secondary schools as Covid-19 isolation centres. “We plead with the Government to drop the option of using boarding school facilities in treating victims of Covid 19 due to post-corona stigma that will affect the management of schools,” he said.

Hon. Sossion was also quick to oppose suggestions to postpone this year’s national examinations (Kcse and Kcpe exams); that are slated for November/ December; according to the time tables released by Knec earlier in the year. “The Government should not entertain such a proposal but work towards early resumption of normalcy to business in all learning institutions,” said Sossion in a statement.

Already, the Ministry of Education has denounced a circular doing rounds on Social media platforms on the possible resumption dates for term one, 2020.

Secondary School Principals in Kitui County Training on Transition of Learners to Senior School

A total of 465 Secondary School Principals in Kitui County have undergone training in preparation for the transition of Junior Secondary School learners to Senior Secondary School next year.

For the first time, the principals are set to manage Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) learners, prompting the Ministry of Education, through the Centre for Mathematics, Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), to arrange a 3-day training aimed at equipping the educators with essential skills and knowledge to effectively implement the Competency-Based Education (CBE) framework.

During the training, conducted simultaneously at Mulango and Muthale Girls’ Secondary Schools, the school leaders gathered from across the expansive County were informed about what to anticipate as they prepare to welcome the grade 10 cohort as well as the associated challenges.

Participants in the forum were informed about the new CBC guidelines, which include the selection, placement, and admission of learners into various categories of senior schools throughout the nation.

The senior school learners will need to specialize in one of three pathways, which cover Arts and Sports Science, Social Sciences, and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).

While addressing attendees at Mulango Girls High School during the official closing ceremony of the three-day training, Kitui County Director of Education Dr. Issack Hassan revealed that the County is currently expecting around 10,000 CBC Junior Secondary School learners to transition to Senior Secondary School.

The County Education Chief stated that arrangements for the upcoming transition have been progressing well to ensure a successful shift throughout the county.

Dr. Hassan noted that the county has sufficient high school institutions equipped with infrastructure and equipment ready to accommodate all ten thousand CBC Grade 10 learners transitioning to senior secondary school.

The Director of Education also confirmed that the placement of grade 10 learners will be based on the students’ choices, merit, psychometric testing, equity, and the capacity of schools.

Dr. Hassan added that senior school learners in grades 10 to 12 will study 7 subjects; 4 core subjects, which are English, Kiswahili, Community Service Learning, and Physical Education; and the other three will be chosen from the available pathways and tracks.

“There will be equity for all learners; they will all have an opportunity to select their pathway from the 3 senior school education pathways specializing in STEM, Arts and Sports Science, and Social Sciences,” stated Dr. Hassan.

The County Education Director also emphasized that the new curriculum requires teachers to be ICT-compliant to effectively perform tasks such as remote learning and live streaming of lessons, enabling both educators and students to interact using technology.

In his closing remarks, the County Education Director instructed the principals to inform all stakeholders at their respective institutions about the upcoming transition of JSS learners to senior secondary school next year to ensure the involvement of all parties in the transition process.

CS Ogamba Clarifies the Position on Mathematics as a Mandatory Subject

Following days of escalating public pressure and confusion, the Ministry of Education has rescinded its contentious proposal to render Mathematics optional under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba provided clarification during the CBC National Conversation event convened at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Thursday, April 24.

“The majority of stakeholders engaged in the CBC dialogue expressed the opinion that Mathematics should remain compulsory in senior schools,” Ogamba declared.

“We have taken your concerns into account, consulted with KICD, and arrived at a decision that some form of Mathematics shall be made compulsory for the other two pathways. ”

This clarification comes in response to a barrage of criticism from education stakeholders, parents, and the public, many of whom expressed apprehension regarding the long-term consequences of diminishing a core subject like Mathematics in senior schools.

Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok further affirmed the ministry’s position, asserting that Mathematics continues to be a compulsory subject in both junior and senior schools across all pathways. “There is no confusion,” Bitok emphasized. “Mathematics is foundational and will persist as a core subject. ”

The initial proposal to render Mathematics optional in senior secondary for non-STEM pathways was withdrawn after comprehensive consultations with educational experts, the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), and various public forums. While Ogamba’s terminology—“some form of mathematics”—still elicited skepticism online, the primary message was unequivocal: the subject is here to remain.

Critics had previously articulated concerns that a reduction in math instruction would hinder students’ abilities in real-world problem-solving and future career opportunities.

The Ministry now contends with the responsibility of ensuring that the revised Mathematics curriculum in non-STEM tracks is practical, meaningful, and consistent with national educational objectives. For the moment, the government seems to have made a complete turnaround—and the citizens of Kenya are keenly observing how this essential subject will be integrated moving forward.

Ministry of education releases a revised 2020/2021 school calendar

The Ministry of education has revised the 2020 school calendar for all primary and secondary schools. In the new calendar learners in Grade 4, Class 8 and Form Four will begin their 2020 second term on Monday, 12th October, 2020. The term will last for 11 weeks and the closing date has been set to be December 12, 2020. The term has been shortened from the previous (normal) duration of 14 weeks.

Term 3 will last for 11 weeks; starting on January 4, 2021 to March 19, 2021.

The Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations are set to start on March 22, 2021 and end on March 24, 2021; lasting for only 3 days. On its part, the Kenya Certificate of Secondary education, KCSE, examinations will commence on March 25, 2021 and end on April 16, 2021; taking 3 weeks and 2 days.

Marking of the 2020 KCSE examinations will kick off on April 19, 2021 and end on May 7, 2021. This will last for three weeks. The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, is expected to release the revised KCSE and KCPE timetables.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has instructed school principals not to allow students who have fees arrears back to school as they report from their mid-term break.

Prof. Magoha said the Ministry is aware that majority of parents who are yet to clear school fees arrears for their children are indeed capable, but were only taking advantage of the current financial situation in the country to pretend otherwise.

He said exemptions should only be accorded to those students that the school principals know for sure that they come from poor families and those whose parents have lost their jobs during this Covid-19 period.

Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) during the handing over ceremony of Agricultural Laboratory Building Annex to the University, the CS said school principals should first confirm the backgrounds of the students before they send them home to collect fees balances.

“Our population is very interesting because we know that well-off parents have failed to pay school fees for the third term, pretending that they are suffering during this pandemic period. This comes even as the government recently released Sh 2.8billion capitation for primary schools and another Sh 6.5billion for free secondary school education.

Magoha said the remaining Sh6.5 billion for the free secondary school programme will be released in the near future.

He added that as the schools reopen from mid-term, education officials will move around to ensure students continue to provide and comply with Covid-19 protocols.

The CS said they have enough face masks which they will be distributing to needy schools to help in containing the virus.

On Form one selection, Prof. Magoha said the exercise is ongoing and before June 15, students will start receiving admission letters.

“We have ensured that there is absolute fairness in Form one selection especially for intelligent and poor children from slum areas. By mid this month, all students who sat for KCPE will know the secondary schools that they have been called to pursue their education,” he said.

CS Ogamba issues ultimatum to principals withholding Form Four certificates

Cabinet Secretary for Education Julius Ogamba has issued a stringent warning to Secondary School Principals who continue to withhold students’ Form Four certificates due to incomplete payment of school fees.

He stated that his office had provided notice to the Principals to unconditionally release the certificates, and that notice has lapsed without the Principals taking action.

“I urge head teachers to comply with that directive immediately upon the resumption of schools,” he remarked.

The Cabinet Secretary was addressing attendees at Marani Catholic Parish, where he, alongside other leaders led by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, was engaged in a fundraising effort to support the construction of the Parish, labeling the withholding of certificates as unlawful.
The Deputy President emphasized the need for unity within the nation to facilitate the government’s operations peacefully and ensure equitable distribution of government resources across the country.

He dismissed critics of President Ruto, asserting that his Kenya Kwanza administration has achieved numerous projects nationwide within just two years, and expressed confidence that it will accomplish even more in the remaining period leading to the 2026 national elections.

“We acknowledge that we have delivered some positive outcomes since your election of us, but there remain additional matters that require your continued patience as we strategize to complete them,” he stated.

The gathering was attended by other government officials, including Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa, and Kuria MP Mathias Robi.

Several MPs from the Gusii region who were present included Senator Richard Onyonka, Japhet Mokaya, MP for Kitutu Chache North, Steve Mogaka, MP for West Mugirango, Patrick Osero, MP for North Mugirango, Sylvanus Osoro, MP for South Mugirango, and Kisii County Woman Representative Donya Aburi.

Mathias Rioba highlighted the significance of the Church, noting its provision of spiritual nourishment and comfort to all individuals.
Robi remarked that the Church plays a substantial role in the development of schools to complement government efforts and committed to collaborating with the Church for the shared objective of progress.

  • All the 2021 FORM ONE admission letters will bear the Ministry of Education’s letter head; The letter contains the Education Ministry’s logo and head.
  • Name of the student, Index number and Sub County,
  • School admitted to (The Secondary school where the student has been placed),
  • Reporting date; Which is in July, 2021.
  • Former primary school’s details; the letter must be stamped by the head teacher, A disclaimer on the letter reads; “This letter will be authenticated on being duly certified by the primary school head complete with a certified copy of birth certificate and finally confirmed by the admitting principal. The letter is issued without any erasure  or alteration and cannot be changed through any form of endorsement whatsoever; utterance of false documents is an offence punishable by law.”
  • The 2021 fee guidelines from the Ministry (The letter gives fees directions thus; “The maximum fees payable per year is detailed in the attached schedule, do confirm the category of your school before making any payment.”)
  • Parents/ Guardians expected to go to schools where their kids have been placed to pick further joining instructions and requirements. (“Urgently get in touch with your new principal at the above school for admission requirements,” says the admission letter from the Ministry.)

Other details that learners would get from the secondary school where they have been selected to join include:
