Mitunguu Technical Training Institute Courses, Contacts, Fees, Location

Mitunguu Technical Training Institute (TTI) is located in Mitunguu, Imenti South constituency, Meru County, KenyaSpecifically, it’s situated along Mati road, about 1.5 kilometers from Mitunguu market. It’s approximately 32 kilometers from Meru Town and 17 kilometers from Nkubu. You can also access the institute through the Ena – Kathwana – Mitunguu Road. 

The institution is registered with the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Authority and is listed on the KUCCPS website.

Mitunguu Technical Training Institute Courses Duration.

The TTI Diploma, Certificate and Artisan Courses have different durations, But generally as shown below:

  • Diploma Programs:

    The duration for diploma programs can vary. Some may be completed in two to three years, while others may take longer depending on the specific course and institution. 

  • Certificate Programs:

    Unlike Diploma Courses, Certificate programs typically have a shorter duration, often ranging from one to two years. 

  • Artisan Programs:
    Artisan programs also have varying durations, but are generally shorter than certificate programs, with some being completed in less than a year. 

Mitunguu TVC fee structure

The TTI Fees is subsidised by the Government. Students admitted through Kuccps also get fees bursary and loans from the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) through the Higher Education Funding Model. Below is the general fees requirements for TTI courses:
  • Diploma Courses Fees: Ksh.67,189 per year to Ksh.72,076 per year.
  • Certificate Courses Fees: between Ksh 56,000 to Ksh 67,189 per year
  • Artisan Courses Fees: between Ksh 56,000 to Ksh 67,189 per year

Mitunguu Technical Training Institute online application

Applications and placement to the TVC are done through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Portal. To apply for placement through KUCCPS, you need to access the student’s portal on the KUCCPS website and log in using your KCSE index number, year of examination, and passwordOnce logged in, you can explore available programs and institutions, and then submit your preferred choices. You can also apply directly to the institution for admission.
 
The Minimum requirements are: C- for diplomas, D+ for craft certificates and E for artisan courses. But, different Courses may have more specific requirements.

Unemployed Kenyan nurses given chance to work in the UK under new Kenya-UK health agreements launched by President Kenyatta in London

Unemployed nurses and health workers from Kenya will have the chance to work in the United Kingdom, UK, as part of a new scheme requested by the Government of Kenya and launched by President Kenyatta on 29th July; during his visit to London.

In a programme to share knowledge and expertise, Kenyan health professionals and health managers will benefit from a special route to work in the UK, before returning to work in Kenya’s health sector. The agreement is open to Kenya’s surplus health workers who are qualified but unemployed, ensuring the process is managed for Kenya’s benefit.

UK Health Secretary, Sajid Javid, and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Labour Cooperation,
Simon Chelugi, signed the agreement on Kenyan recruitment into the UK’s National Health
Service. It came on the third day of President Kenyatta’s visit to London, on a tour of the
Royal College of Physicians in London. The special programme came at the request of the
Government of Kenya to channel nurses currently unemployed into jobs.

The President also witnessed the signing of the Kenya-UK Health Alliance, which will bring
together UK and Kenyan institutions – universities, teaching hospitals – cooperating on
health partnerships.

One of the flagship partnerships is on improving cancer treatment for Kenyans, thanks to a
tie-up between Kenyatta University Teaching Research and Referral Hospital and the
University of Manchester/Christie NHS Foundation Trust. It will help improve prevention and management of cancer in Kenya, and promote Kenya a regional hub for cancer treatment.

The signing of the Kenya-UK Health Alliance by President Kenyatta on his visit to the UK is the latest chapter in our flourishing partnership.”

The UK’s Secretary of State for Health, Sajid Javid, said:

“We have a historic and mutually respectful relationship with Kenya. This has been strengthened by working closely with Kenya during the pandemic and sharing UK vaccine doses to support Kenya’s fight against COVID-19.

“Our healthcare agreement will make the most of UK and Kenyan health expertise which will be beneficial to both countries, with the exchange of knowledge and training which will provide first class healthcare.”

It comes after a flurry of announcements of UK support for Kenya’s COVID-19 response, as
part of our flourishing Health Partnership, signed by the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, and Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Health, Mutahi Kagwe, during a visit to Nairobi in January 2021.

On 28 July, Prime Minister Johnson confirmed the donation of 817,000 COVID-19
AstraZeneca vaccine doses for Kenya – half a bilateral donation, and half a UK donation
through the COVAX facility – while earlier this month we announced new support on
genomic sequencing with KEMRI to tackle emerging COVID-19 variants.

Kenyan and British scientists at KEMRI and Oxford University were closely involved in the development of the AstraZeneca vaccine, through trials of the vaccine through KEMRI Kilifi.

The special arrangement for Kenyan nurses to come to the UK was part of a request by the Government of Kenya to capitalise in those qualified but unemployed health workers in Kenya.

The exact numbers who will go to the UK – and the process for visas will be confirmed in the next three months. Kenya and UK have a mutual agreement for health workforce collaboration that provides for bilateral knowledge exchange and capacity improvement. Both countries seek to benefit from each other’s experiences and comparative strengths in healthcare.

In the NHS in England there are 894 Kenyans working across all roles. This makes Kenyans the 30th largest nationality group in the NHS. Positive economic impacts as a result of well-managed migration results from:

  • Evidence that where a job can lead to global opportunities (such as nursing) more people will enter training in the home country, than if those global opportunities were not there;
  • The money sent home by those overseas is significant. To the Philippines, remittances account for about 10% of national GDP; and
  • Some countries we recruit from leverage recruitment or administration fees. This can then be reinvested in employment within the local health sector or in additional training.
  • The launch of the Kenya-UK Health Alliance formalises all the cooperation and partnerships between our non-governmental institutions on health, such as universities, hospitals, and research institutions. In Kenya, it includes: Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTTRH); Kisii University; Egerton University; University of Nairobi; and Maseno University.

Given the growing burden of cancer in Kenya, developing a comprehensive cancer service for the country and the entire East Africa Region is an essential part of this programme.

Updated TSC transfer, delocalization, lists for teachers in December 2019 per county; Full list

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has effected the December 2019 delocalization exercise for school heads. A total of 1,010 Principals in secondary schools have been transferred. Also transferred are 1,621 head teachers in primary schools. The handing/ taking over exercise for the administrators is expected to be completed before schools open for first term on January 6, 2020.

Those moved are heads and principals and their deputies serving in their home counties and those who have served in the same station for a long period. Also on the move are new administrators who were appointed after the just concluded interviews .

Teachers with medical conditions have been spared from the ongoing delocalization exercise. Also spared are teachers aged above 56 years and those set to retire.

The Commission kicked off the delocalization exercise in January, 2018. Other massive deployments would then follow in April, August and December of the same year. Though in April, 2019 the Commission slowed down the transfers as only a handful administrators were moved.

Classroom teachers have not been spared either. A number of them will be reporting to new stations in January, 2020 after getting their transfer letters.

ABOUT KUCCPS

1. What is the main function of KUCCPS?

The main functions of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) are to coordinate the selection of secondary school graduates for enrollment to universities and colleges under Government sponsorship.

It is also mandated to develop career guidance programmes for the benefit of students, collect and retain data relating to student placement to universities and colleges and advise the Government on matters relating to student placement.

2. What is the difference between KUCCPS and HELB?

KUCCPS is a student placement agency while the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) is a student funding agency.

While KUCCPS selects applicants for admission to universities and colleges for Government sponsorship, HELB provides Government loans and bursaries to the students once enrolled.

3. Does KUCCPS provide services at Huduma Centres?

KUCCPS services are available at the following Huduma Centres: Nairobi (GPO and Makadara), Eldoret, Meru, Nyeri, Kisumu, Kakamega, Nakuru, Kitui, Garissa and Mombasa.

4. How can I contact KUCCPS?

KUCCPS PLACEMENT PROCESS

5. How do I log in to my student portal?

To log in to the Student’s Portal, go to your browser and type the address students.kuccps.net. It will open into a login page.

Click the Login tab and enter your correct KCSE index number, KCSE examination year and a password.

The password is either your KCPE index number or birth certificate number. The login page is accessible via the Placement Service website.

Another option is to log in through the KUCCPS Mobile App, which can be downloaded from  Google Play Store free of charge.

You will need your KCSE Index Number, KCSE Year and Password to log in.

6. What is the difference between cut-off points and weighted cluster points?

Weighted cluster points are a KCSE examination graduate’s computed performance in four subjects required for admission to a given degree programme against that of the best candidates in the particular KCSE examination year.

It is based on cluster subject requirements and the overall performance of a candidate. The points are computed to three decimal places to reduce chances of applicants tying on points.

Cut-off points are the weighted cluster points of the last competitively placed student in a given degree programme.

7. Where can I find the list of the institutions under the Government sponsorship programme?

The list is available on the Student’s Portal accessible through the Placement Service website www.kuccps.ac.ke.

8. When does the course application cycle begin for current KCSE candidates?

The application cycle begins during the third term when KCSE examination candidates choose courses with guidance from their teachers. This stage is referred to as the Centre/School Application.

9. Can non-Kenyan citizens apply for placement?

One has to be a Kenyan citizen to be eligible for placement. Government policy limits government sponsorship to citizens.

10. What is the meaning of “revision of choices”?

Revision of choices means to change the courses that an applicant submitted for consideration. KCSE examination candidates apply for courses in school. After their results are out, they get a chance to align their choices with their performance and new career interests.

Students who miss the school application can apply during the revision of choices.

11. How many courses can I apply for?

One can apply for a maximum of six choices for degree courses and four for diploma, certificate and artisan programmes.

12. How will I get to know when the application is open?

The Placement Service advertises placement application and publishes notices in mainstream mass media and its official digital communication channels.

13. How much is the application fee?

The minimum placement processing fee payable during application is Ksh500. The cumulative maximum is Ksh1,500.

The actual fee depends on the application stage; Ksh500 is charged for school application and Ksh1,000 for revision of choices.

For revision of choices, the payment is done once and the transaction code from the first revision application is used in all subsequent revision of choices.

14. I paid to the wrong account. How can I get my money back?

Kindly provide the transaction details and a reversal will be initiated. Please note that reversals take between three and seven days.

15. How can I know the institution where I have been placed?

The Placement Service will publish the placement details for successful applicants in their individual Student’s Portals.

Additionally, applicants who provided mobile phone contacts may be informed through SMS.

 16. Are previous years’ KCSE candidates eligible for placement if they did not benefit during their time?

Yes but only for TVET placement.

17. How many subjects do you considerfor cluster point calculation?

The seven subjects examined by KNEC are considered in the calculation of applicants’ weighted cluster points.

18. Where can I get the subject requirements for various courses?

The information is available on the Student’s Portal under the “Programmes” and “Downloads” tabs.

19. Can IGCSE graduates apply for Government sponsorship placement to universities and colleges?

The placement of Government-sponsored students is for those who have followed the KCSE system, which is the Government-prescribed system of education in Kenya, and have sat and obtained results in the KCSE examination.

20. Does satisfying minimum requirements for a programme guarantee one to get that programme?

Securing a course depends on the competitiveness of an applicant (compared to other applicants for the same programme) and the number of available vacancies (programme capacity).

21. When will KUCCPS announce the placement outcome/results?

The release of the placement process outcome will happen after the completion of application processing.
The exact date will be communicated through mass media.

22. Where do placed students obtain their admission letters?

The respective institutions where students have been placed are responsible for issuing admission letters and other joining instructions.

23. Does KUCCPS place students to private universities?

KUCCPS places Government-sponsored students to most private universities besides public universities. The full list of all eligible institutions are available on the Student’s Portal.

24. What happens if one misses the School Application?

Applicants who miss school application can submit their choices during the revision of choices.

25. I did the KCSE examination many years ago but I have never gone to college. Can KUCCPS place me in a degree programme?

That is not possible. Placement to degree programmes is meant for eligible fresh secondary school graduates (those who did the KCSE examination in the immediate year preceding the selection).

However, you can apply for TVET courses.

KUCCPS INTER-INSTITUTIONAL TRANSFER

26. What is inter-institutional transfer?

This is an opportunity given to applicants to apply to be transferred from the institution that they were placed in to another subject to meeting the requirements. The transfer processing fee is Ksh 1,000.

27. How many times can one request for an inter-institution transfer?

Applicants can transfer only once.

28. When will the system open for inter-institutional transfer application?

The system opens for a specific period following the announcement of the release of the placement outcome.
Keep checking the Placement Service website and official digital platforms for updates.

29. How long does the inter-institution transfer process take?

After submission of duly completed inter-institution transfer application and endorsement by the two concerned universities/colleges, the final processing takes up to 14 working days.

30. What are the requirements for inter-institution transfer?

An applicant must satisfy the minimum requirements for the programme they wish to change to (where applicable).

The applicant must also meet the cut-off points for the specific programme in their desired destination institution. They should also give reasons in support of their transfer applications.

In addition, the heads of the respective institutions must endorse the transfer application.

KUCCPS CAREER GUIDANCE

31. How can an institution invite KUCCPS for career events?

To invite KUCCPS for a career event in your institution, send an official invitation at least three weeks to the event. The Placement Service offers career guidance in schools free of charge.

GOVERNMENT SPONSORSHIP/FUNDING

32. Does KUCCPS sponsor students in TVET institutions?

KUCCPS does not sponsor students but selects students for Government sponsorship to universities and colleges.

The Government supports the students admitted through the KUCCPS process by sending capitation (funding) to the respective TVET institutions.

33. If I get a placement to a private university, will I benefit from Government sponsorship?

Yes. If KUCCPS places you to a private university, you will be a Government-sponsored student similar to those taken to public universities. Therefore, you will enjoy the same tuition subsidies as students placed in public universities.

34. What is the difference between Government sponsorship and HELB loan?

• Since independence in 1963, the country adapted the 7-4-2-3 system of Education

Confirmation Inquiry
 In confirmation inquiry, people are provided with the question and procedure (method) where the results are known in advance, and confirmation of the results is the object of the inquiry.
 Confirmation inquiry is useful to reinforce a previously learned idea; to experience investigation processes or practice a specific inquiry skill, such as collecting and recording

 

 In structured inquiry, learners are provided with the question and procedure/method
 the task is to generate an explanation that is supported by the evidence collected in the procedure.

 Here, learners are provided with only the research question, and the task is to design the procedure/method and to test the question and the resulting explanations.
 Because this kind of inquiry is more open than a confirmation or structured inquiry, it is most successful when learners have had numerous opportunities to learn and practice different ways to plan experiments and record data

Introduction to PCIs
• Children are faced with a myriad of challenges and issues owing to the social-cultural and economic dynamics in the society.
• CBC learning is expected to equip learners with appropriate competencies they require in order to effectively address the PCIs of everyday life, thereby leading a fulfilled life as well as becoming a productive member of the society

The PCIs in CBC

The PCIs include:
• Peace education, Integrity, Ethnic and racial relations, Social cohesion, Patriotism and Good governance, Child’s rights, Child care and protection
• Health related issues such as HIV and AIDS, Alcohol and Substance use, Life style diseases, personal hygiene, Communicable and chronic diseases e.g. COVID-19
• Life skills education; human sexuality
• Environmental Education, Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Safety and security Education, Gender and Animal Welfare Education.

Activity 1
In groups of three discuss and present on the methods teachers can use to integrate PCIs in learning.

How to Mainstream PCIs:
Formal:
• A relevant and suitable sub strand or sub theme in a learning area/subject is identified where PCIs can appropriately be incorporated and taught alongside the subject matter
Non formal:
• These are organized, structured and systematic learning activities (NFPs) that take place in school. They support acquisition of knowledge, values and skills learnt in class. They include games, clubs and societies.
Informal:
• This refers to the Knowledge, Attitudes and Skills or behaviour acquired by learners from the social interaction with members of the school community. Exemplary behaviour and appropriate values can easily be emulated.

PARENTAL EMPOWERMENT AND
ENGAGEMENT (PEE)
• PEE has a positive impact on the overall development of the learner in areas such as acquisition of moral values, improved health and nutrition, increased enrolment, retention, transition and academic achievement.
• Parents are an integral part of children’s holistic growth and
development at all levels of life.
• Some parents are not aware of how to effectively play their roles and responsibilities in facilitating the wellbeing and education of their children.
• There is great need to build effective partnerships between parents, guardians, community and schools to support
children’s learning.

a) Parental empowerment

Pillar I: Parental Empowerment
• Empowerment refers to the process of becoming stronger and more confident in performing one’s role.
• The general outcome of PEE is enhanced parental knowledge, skills, attitudes and practices that support holistic development of the learner in a safe and supportive environment.
• Empowerment is implemented through training, advocacy and resourcing

Pillar II: Parental Engagement
• Parental engagement is the active participation of parents in their children’s learning and development in collaboration with teachers and other stakeholders.
• Parent-school connections must be sustained for parental engagement to succeed. These connections are maintained through various activities, opportunities to render services, effective communication and ensuring emerging issues are jointly addressed.
• Some of the key areas in which parents are engaged include decision making, communication and collaboration, learning and development process, resourcing, volunteering, linkages and career guidance.

VALUES BASED EDUCATION (VBE)
• Values are defined as standards that guide an individual on how to respond or behave in a given circumstance. They influence how we feel, act and make choices in life.
• The overall goal of values based education is to nurture values in learners to become empowered, engaged and ethical citizens for positive and holistic transformation of society.

What Learners Gain in VBE
In a Values-based school, learners:
• Develop a secure sense of self.
• Become more empowered to take responsibility for their own learning.
• Develop academic diligence.
• Develop relational trust.
• Become articulate and able to talk freely and well.
• Can understand their work and lives much more deeply through silence, quietness and reflection techniques of the Values-based education.

• They should be able to identify community problems through research, and solve the problems using their knowledge, skills, personal talents and gifts.
• Should appreciate the importance of collaborating with community members towards economic and social development.

• CSL integrates classroom learning and community service to enable learners to reflect, experience and learn from the community.
• Learners link social development with academic development
• In early years education and upper primary CSL has been integrated and infused in specific learning areas.
• CSL will be a stand-alone subject at Senior school

What CSL Entails
• Community Service Learning entails a balanced
emphasis on both students’ learning and addressing
real needs in the community.
• Learning outcomes are linked to meaningful human, safety, educational and environmental needs.
• The service experience is brought back to the classroom to enhance learning.
• Learners work on real problems that make academic learning relevant while simultaneously enhancing their social skills, analytical ability, civic and ethical responsibility, self-efficacy, and career development.

• This will enable learners to manage their career pathways and equip them for lifelong learning.

• The LSP programs include Guidance services, Career guidance, counselling services, Peer education, mentorship, coaching, Clubs and societies, Sports and games and Chaplaincy.
• The overall aim of the LSPs is to provide non-formal learning opportunities that will facilitate learners’ personal, social, physical, educational and career development.

LSPs: Counselling & Sports
Counseling
Counselling is a process through which an individual is assisted to get access to a greater part of their personal resources, as a means of responding to challenges of their life. It aims at helping the individual make decisions, express emotions, achieve behavior change and learn to solve and cope with personal challenges.
Sports and Games
Sports aim at maintaining or improving physical abilities and skills, while providing enjoyment to participants and in some cases entertainment for spectators. Games are structured forms of play intended for enjoyment, competition and sometimes used as an educational tool.

LSPs: Peer Education & Mentorship

• Peer Education is the teaching or sharing of healthy information, values and behaviour in educating others who may share similar social backgrounds or life experiences.

• Mentorship is a relational process in which a more experienced person guides a less experienced one. It aims at enabling a learner to develop relevant skills to overcome challenging academic and life experiences. It is also intended to assist an individual to uphold healthy inter and intra personal relationships. Further, it enables individual learners to identify role models who can assist them in setting achievable goals.

LSP: Chaplaincy
Chaplaincy is the provision of religious services and spiritual guidance to those in need.
It aims at helping learners to be well grounded in spiritual matters.
It also helps learners develop religious tolerance for harmonious co-existence.

INDIVIDUALISED EDUCATION PROGRAMME (IEP)

 

• An Individualised Education Programme (IEP) is a written plan that describes what the teacher and other professionals will do to meet special needs of a learner. It focuses on the individual learner’s needs, thereby allowing him or her to acquire knowledge, skills, attitudes and values at his/her own pace.

• An Individualized Education Programme (IEP) is a plan whereby teachers, support personnel, and parents work together as a team to meet the needs of individual learners who require individualized support

A learner who may need an IEP can be identified through the following process

The IEP is a key intervention strategy which creates an opportunity for teachers, parents, school administrators, related services personnel and learners to work together to improve learning outcomes for learners with special needs.

Components of an Individualised Education Programme (IEP)
Background information
Background information includes the historical background of the learner, family and home background, learning environment, birth history among others.
The learner’s present level of performance,
The current level of performance of the learner is assessed to identify academic skills in which the learner has strengths and those that he/she has challenges. Other aspects that may affect learning such as behaviour, communication and social skills should also be assessed. This can be done through observation, oral or written questions and interviews

Long term and short term outcomes
• Long term outcomes
After collecting information on the learner’s strengths and challenges, a statement describing what the learner is expected to achieve over a period of time, for example on term, is made. The long term outcome is then broken into short term outcomes.

• Short tern learning outcomes
The short term outcomes define in measurable terms the competencies that should be mastered within shorter duration of time to culminate in achieving the long term outcome.

Implementation Strategy
• Initiation and termination dates The implementation of the IEP should commence after the entry behaviour
assessment has been done. The duration of implementation will depend on the achievement of the stated outcomes. Reviews should be carried out continuously and
adjustment of the termination date should be made accordingly.
• Adaptation
These are changes to the curriculum, learning resources and physical environment that may be required to accommodate learners with special needs in the learning environment.

Assessment procedure and criteria
• This component describes how progress will be measured and specifies how well the learner is expected to perform.
• Assessment tools such as checklists, observation schedules, oral and written questions may be used. Continuous assessment record will be instrumental in determining the decision to be made about learner’s progress.

Related specialized services
Related services may include physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, guidance and counselling among others. Other services are sign language interpretation and braille subscription.

Conclusion
• This can be done in two ways: If the learner achieved all the outcomes specified, the IEP ends. If the learner achieved some of the outcomes, then the period of the IEP can be extended/reviewed for the learner to acquire the remaining outcomes.

KUCCPS and Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas National Polytechnic Collaborate to Improve Access to Distinctive Courses

KUCCPS and Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas National Polytechnic Collaborate to Improve Access to Distinctive Courses

Morendat Institute of Oil and Gas National Polytechnic has partnered with KUCCPS’ student placement process to extend broader access to its distinctive courses oriented towards the oil and gas industry.

This collaboration arises after the institution’s elevation to a national polytechnic in September 2024.

Five of its programs – Diploma in Petroleum Management, Diploma in Welding and Fabrication, Diploma in Analytical Chemistry, Diploma in Environmental Science, and Certificate in Welding and Fabrication – have been made available on the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) student portal for online application in anticipation of the May 2025 intake.

The online KUCCPS application portal is scheduled to close on April 30, 2025.

KUCCPS CEO Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome remarked that by incorporating the programs onto the KUCCPS application portal, the institution has aligned itself with over 200 public TVET institutions, 70 universities, and 90 Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) campuses that have adopted the central student placement system.

The increasing number of institutions enrolling students through the KUCCPS application portal, including TVET colleges managed by other government ministries apart from the Ministry of Education, indicates confidence in the integrity and efficiency of the KUCCPS processes.

“Individuals applying for courses through KUCCPS cannot falsify KCSE results as we obtain those directly from KNEC,” Dr. Wahome stated during a meeting with Morendat Institute Director, Dr. Nancy Kosgey, at the KUCCPS offices in Nairobi.

The five programs offered by Morendat Institute address various dimensions of the oil and gas industry and ensure that students are adequately equipped for industry challenges and prepared to contribute to the sector’s sustainable development, according to Dr. Kosgey.

“Morendat provides students with relevant theoretical and practical skills driven by industry needs, which are essential for the dynamic sector that powers the global economy. ”

The institute has established partnerships with international institutions to deliver courses that are recognized both locally and globally. “At present, we offer a specialized course in welding that is ISO 9606-1 certified, conforming to international welding standards. This course is one of the unique offerings in the region, providing job opportunities both locally and internationally. It is a three-month program that gives students an international competitive advantage,” the Director elucidated.

The specialized welding course also appeals to all graduates, from Form Four leavers to Bachelor’s degree and even Master’s holders, who are aiming to prepare for careers abroad, according to Dr. Kosgey.

The institution’s state-of-the-art training apparatus conducts various internationally recognized welding processes, including Stick Manual Arc Welding, Tungsten Inert Gas, and Metal Inert Gas.

Within its Eldoret Campus, the institution features a fire and safety training center that provides firefighting training utilizing the latest live fire and rescue training equipment that is unique in the region. This apparatus enables trainees to simulate different categories of fire, thereby offering them practical firefighting experience.
Notably, the firefighting training program has garnered the attention of county governments. Uasin Gishu County, for example, sponsored youths from 30 county wards who, upon graduation, were employed by North Rift counties within their fire departments. “We urge other county governments to also collaborate with Morendat,” stated Dr. Wahome.

Dr. Kosgey further noted: “At the Nairobi campus, we have a laboratory equipped with state-of-the-art technology for analytical chemistry training and testing of petroleum products. Our laboratories constitute our strength. ” With the approval of the National Environmental Management Authority, environmental testing for soil, effluent, and water analysis is also carried out in the laboratory.

The national polytechnic has also launched hospitality courses at its Naivasha campus. With a conference centre that has a capacity of 54 beds, the campus aims to provide practical, hands-on industry training suitable for this sensitive discipline. The inaugural intake of students is planned for May 2025.

To be eligible for the three-year diploma programs, applicants must possess a minimum mean grade of C- (minus) in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination. For the two-year certificate programs, candidates are required to have a minimum mean grade of D (plain).

The programs are assessed and certified by the TVET Curriculum Development, Assessment, and Certification Council (TVET CDACC), ensuring that the training adheres to national education standards.

Morendat Institute collaborates with Kenya Pipeline staff as trainers due to their extensive experience in pipeline operations and advanced training. Students acquire work experience from KPC.

To alleviate the financial burden on parents, the institution permits flexibility in the payment of the annual tuition fee of Kshs. 71,700.

How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.
  1. 1. How you can Choose a Career Pathway:

    • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
    • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
    • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.
  2. 2. Select Subject Combinations:

    • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
    • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.
  3. 3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

    • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
    • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
    • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

Committee to oversee school reopening strategies constituted

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has today appointed a team to look at safe ways of reopening schools and planning the education calendar. The Committee dubbed ‘Covid-19 national education response committee’ will be tasked with coming up with strategies of restoring normality in the education sector.

“The Ministry has appointed a nine member committee to take charge of the process of exploring the best possible strategies of restoring normalcy in the sub-sector education,” reads a presser by CS Magoha.

Schools were expected to reopen on May 4, 2020 for commencement of the second term, but the April holiday was extended by one month to allow the Ministry plan on how to safely reopen the schools. Term one was terminated prematurely as a result of the covid-19 outbreak in the country.

The nine member committee, that kicks off its operations immediately, will be chaired by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development chairperson Dr. Sarah Ruto.

The ministry is grappling with a limited time ahead of this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, and Kenya Certificate of Primary Education, KCPE, examinations.

The Ministry insists the examinations will go on as planned.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Committee on Education last week CS Magoha said it was difficult to state the exact reopening date for schools; saying that the ministry values the safety of learners and other stakeholders.

Teachers’ unions sidelined

Learners are already receiving daily lesson broadcasts as one of the measures put up by the Ministry to try and recover lost time.

“The Ministry has come up with measures to mitigate the effects of Covid-19 in the education sector, including mounting of online learning and the drafting of a master plan to guide the response to covid-19 in the education sector,” adds the CS.

The other members to the committee have been drawn from various departments in the education sector. Stakeholders have also been brought on board. While parent and heads associations have been given slot in the committee, teachers’ unions have received a wide berth. Both the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, KUPPET, and the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) will be observing from the sidelines.
