2022 KCSE Marking Centres, Dates, Directions

KCSE MARKING CENTRES 2021– Examiners who shall be marking this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE) can now download their 2022 marking invitation letters.

The letters are available on the Knec portal https://examinersapp.knec.ac.ke/.

The marking centres and reporting dates have been indicated on the marking invitation letters.

For some KCSE papers, though, either the marking centre or reporting dates are missing. For letters with reporting dates, examiners are required to arrive at the marking centres on the indicated dates by 2.00pm.

There should be no space left between the index number and the word KCSE.

One can also download the whole school’s KCSE results by Visiting the Official KNEC exams portal; https://www.knec-portal.ac.ke/.  This one requires the school’s log in credentials.

Finally, candidates can visit the school for their results. This is usually a day after the results have been released. Mathematics to be optional at Senior Secondary School- Knec States

Leaders within the education sector have affirmed that Mathematics will only be obligatory in primary and junior secondary education.

The chairman of the Kenya National Examination Council (Knec), Julius Nyabundi, indicated yesterday that Mathematics at the primary and junior levels is sufficient for fostering understanding in the subject. It has also been revealed that student performance in Mathematics at the secondary school level has consistently been poor when compared to the results of end-of-primary school assessments.

Andrew Otieno, Knec’s deputy director of Quality Assurance and Archives, noted that an analysis of KCPE and KCSE examination results indicates that students demonstrate commendable performance in Mathematics upon completing primary school; however, a significant decline is observed when they undertake their Form Four examination.

An examination of the 2022 results, for instance, demonstrates that over 80 percent of candidates achieved grades between A and D+ at the Class Eight level, whereas this figure diminished to 17. 46 percent in KCSE.

This unsatisfactory performance placed students’ final examination results in secondary school in Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia ahead of those of Kenyan candidates. Nevertheless, Otieno commented that this discrepancy does not stem from a challenging curriculum but rather from a stringent grading and assessment framework.

“This underscores the necessity to reevaluate core subjects in senior school, thereby ensuring that Mathematics is undertaken solely by students whose chosen courses necessitate it,” he remarked.

He made these statements yesterday during the inauguration of the second Knec Annual Symposium on Competency Based Assessment in Nairobi.

During an interview conducted on the periphery of the symposium, Nyabundi asserted that students will have acquired the requisite arithmetic literacy by the conclusion of junior secondary school, thus negating the rationale for mandating it in senior secondary education.

“The Competency-Based Curriculum is formulated to enhance foundational skills by the conclusion of junior secondary school (Grade 9),” he stated.

Nyabundi expressed that emphasis could transition toward subjects that align with students’ strengths, such as humanities or vocational skills, to enhance overall academic and learning outcomes.

This development follows a public outcry after the Ministry of Education announced that Mathematics would be an optional subject at advanced levels. Instead, English, Kiswahili or Kenya Sign Language, Community Service Learning, and Physical Education would be compulsory subjects.

However, it is concurrently anticipated that up to 60 percent of students in senior secondary school will opt to take Mathematics, as they will pursue the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) pathway.

Otieno contended that the decision to mandate Mathematics is detrimental to students who are inclined toward the arts pathway.

Knec stated that this alteration could potentially rectify the “dismal pass rate below 30 percent” in KCSE Mathematics.

He also remarked that numerous national examination boards in the region adhere to a similar approach.

Simultaneously, the inclusion of Community Service Learning and Physical Education as mandatory subjects has been supported.

Eunice Gachoka from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development indicated that research has demonstrated that Physical Education contributes to the development of a well-rounded student.
“Regardless of whether the focus is on psychomotor skills, coordination, or cognitive development, Physical Education has been demonstrated to contribute to the comprehensive development of a student, which is why it is regarded as a mandatory subject,” she stated.

Community Service Learning, she indicated, would foster the emergence of a patriotic and responsible citizenry. This statement follows various speakers addressing the deterioration of social values and patriotism among Kenyans.

The annual tuition fee for TVET courses at many Kenyan Technical and Vocational Colleges (TVCs) is Ksh 67,189This includes a government capitation of Ksh 30,000 per trainee, leaving a balance of Ksh 26,420 to be paid by the student, which can be paid in installments. Additionally, students may be eligible for a HELB loan of Ksh 40,000. Other potential costs include KUCCPS registration fees, industrial attachment fees, and examination fees.

2021 Agricultural Society of Kenya, ASK, shows Calendar

The annual Agriculture Society of Kenya (ASK) shows are set to make a come-back this year after a one-year hiatus.

This is after the Ministry of Health approved modalities that include health protocols that will guide staging of the shows.

In a communication published on the ASK Twitter page, permission to stage the shows will be granted based on the prevailing Covid-19 case load for the respective county.

“Each of our shows and trade fairs will be given approvals on a case-by-case basis depending on the case load in the country,” reads the communication.

This year’s theme is “Promoting Innovation and Technology in Agriculture and Trade”.

If a schedule from ASK’s website is anything to go by, the Central Kenya National Show will be the first fair this year following the break occasioned by the Covid-19 outbreak in March 2020.

The society has already made a request to the Ministry of Health seeking approval to stage the Kitale and Nyeri shows. ASK says that the two counties have a minimal spread of coronavirus.

According to the Nyeri ASK branch show Manager Amos Kirui, key requirement from the Ministry of Health is crafting of crowd management measures to prevent spread of Covid-19.

Show organizers will also be expected to provide thermo guns and install hand washing stations to be used by show goers.

They will also be expected to ensure that exhibitors and attendees maintain social distance by restricting the number of people entering the show ground and ensuring that those allowed inside keep their masks on at all times.

“We are considering working with the local administration to help us enforce some of the regulations and also setting up separate entrances and exits to ensure that the two sets of crowds do not crowd at one place,” said Kirui.

He added that it was premature to set a tentative date for the staging of the show as the organizers were still waiting for a go-ahead from the Ministry of Health. Upon approval, the ASK will proceed to invite exhibitors for participation.

In 2019, the Central Kenya National show brought together over 110 exhibitors at the Kabiru-ini showgrounds in Nyeri town.

ASK says it’s also working on a resumption schedule for the other shows with sectoral shows being considered for Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Machakos counties before the end of the year.

The Ministry of Education, State Department for Early Learning and Basic Education invites recent University graduates in ICT and Education with ICT to apply for Information Communication and Technology Internship Programme.

The Ministry through the programme is looking for young interns for a 12 month internship programme to support the Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) at the Sub-County level.

Duties and Responsibilities

An intern at this level will be responsible to the Sub County Director of Education in performance of his/her duties.

Specific duties and responsibilities will entail:

  • Support of E-Learning and content development in line with the schemes of work
  • Provide class support and training of Primary School teachers in use of digital literacy devices
  • Support implementation of the Digital learning programme
  • Carrying out innovations to enable schools improve on use of digital learning.
  • Provide support in safe, secure and ethical use of technology in learning
  • Assist teachers by integrating ICT in delivery of teaching, learning and assessment
  • Support school staff with development and production of key school policies and procedures

Education news today- Schools to receive FSE funds

Secondary schools will receive free education funds this week. This is according to Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha. He said secondary schools will receive close Sh15 billion.

“We shall release the money next week (this week) to schools and therefore no one should try to cause panic or anxiety,” He said on last Thursday.

According to school heads, their accounts have run dry and they may not adequately prepare for the administration of KCPE and KCSE examinations if the cash is not disbursed.

The Ministry of Education released Sh14.6 billion to fund secondary schools and another Sh4.6 billion for primary institutions when schools reopened in January this year.

The government’s financing model of free education is spread in a 50:30:20 ratio meaning that half the money is sent during the First Term, 30 per cent in the Second Term and the balance released in Third Term.

In total each learner in all public secondary schools receives Sh22,244 per year under the government’s Free Day Secondary Education (FDSE) program. Of this Sh9,400 goes into operations including Personal Emoluments (Salaries and wages for BOM staff).

TSC to reduce CBA review cycle to 2 years

President William Ruto has accepted a request by teachers that the period it takes to review their salaries be reduced from the current four years.

The teachers want the four-year cycle of reviewing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the Teachers Service Commission and their unions be reduced to two years.

Whereas the President agreed that the period should be reduced, he tasked The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), the Ministry of Education and teacher unions to deliberate on the matter and propose the appropriate CBA period.

Speaking at State House Nairobi when he hosted 10,000 teachers from all parts of the country on Saturday, President Ruto commended the teachers for embracing dialogue over salaries and other terms of employment.

He said there was no need for teachers to go to the streets over matters that can be solved amicably.

The current CBA covers the period 2025-2029, and was signed in July 2025. The agreement introduces a basic salary increase for teachers spread over the four-year period. The first phase was implemented last July.

At the same time, President Ruto said the government will provide a better medical cover for teachers that is in tandem with what civil servants get.

“We are going to review the medical cover for teachers because the current one does not meet the medical needs of the teaching fraternity,” President Ruto said.

At the meeting, teachers and the Affordable Housing Board signed an MoU to reserve 20 per cent of the housing units for teachers.

“We are signing a Memorandum of Understanding for teachers to get 20 per cent of affordable houses reserved for them,” the President said.

The President pointed out that through the Housing Levy, teachers contribute KSh900 million or 13 per cent of the total housing fund every month, saying they deserved decent homes like the rest of Kenyans.

The President reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the education sector to produce a well-trained and knowledgeable workforce to drive the country’s transformation.

In the past three years, he said, the government has increased the education budget from KSh540 billion in 2022 to KSh702 billion in the 2025-2026 financial year, the largest increase in the country’s history.

He also explained that the government has addressed concerns over the Competency-Based Education and Training system, injecting clarity, a smooth transition and the hiring of 76,000 teachers.

“We will recruit 24,000 teachers in January to make the number hired in the past three years 100,000. This has reduced shortages and boosted the teacher-student ratio,” he said.

The President said the government has built 23,000 classrooms, established the Open University of Kenya, and introduced a new funding higher education model that supports learners while increasing resources for universities and technical training colleges.

President Ruto commended the teachers for their service and commitment, saying that they often sacrifice personal comfort for the sake of their students.

He described teachers as unsung heroes whose dedication shapes the foundation of society.

“Teachers are the greatest patriots and heroes of the Republic of Kenya. They mind the children of others and spend sleepless nights thinking about them,” he said.

Saying that the nation owes much of its progress to the teaching fraternity, President Ruto asked them to support the government’s transformation agenda.

He regretted that Kenya lagged behind countries that were its peers in the 1960s, including South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia.

“We were at the same level of development in 1963, but they are now in the First World, while we are still in the Third World,” he explained.

Pointing out that transformation rises or falls on the quality of leadership, the President said the government will continue making the right decisions that would change Kenya in a generation.

“The countries we were at par in the 1960s made the necessary decisions and today they are in the First World. We are still in the Third World,” he said.

On teachers’ career progression, he said the government will increase funds for promotion from KSh1 billion to KSh2 billion to double the promotions from 25,000 to 50,000 a year.

In the past three years, the President disclosed that 151,000 teachers have been promoted yet a huge backlog remains.

On the Kenya National Union of Teachers request that 45-year-old trained teachers who have not been recruited by the TSC be absorbed. the President directed that the employer adopt the policy of first out of college, first in on employment.

“Beginning this year, we are going to employ teachers based on First In First Out policy,” he said.

He told the Ministry of Education officials to compile the list of teachers who are 45 years old and unemployed to explore the possibility of hiring them.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki said teachers are the silent soldiers of every nation, explaining that they “spend sleepless nights for the sake of children of others”.

“The patriotism of teachers is not written on flags, but in the small victories of a child who learns to read, a young mind awakened to possibility, a dream kept alive in a humble classroom,” Prof Kindiki pointed out.

Kakamega County revised TSC recruitment schedule- Interview dates and venues

The TSC County Director in Kakamega has released a new teachers’ recruitment schedule. Whereas the interview venues have been retained, the interview dates on the other hand have been changed.

Admission Requirements

This admission offer is made on the basis of the statement of your qualifications as presented by the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) or other approved examination bodies. As a student you will be expected to register for courses in your degree programme. Any change of Faculty or Department will be permitted only by approval of the University Authorities. A bona fide student will be considered to be one registered in the University during a current academic year. Students unable to register in the academic year may Defer their studies or take an Academic Leave for that academic year. This should be done by writing a letter to the office of the Registrar (Academic Affairs), stating reasons for deferment to the next academic year. The deferment period shall be one (1) academic year renewable continuously up to a maximum of three (3) academic years.
