The Kisii University has announced that learning will be resumed towards the end of May, 2020 and has asked students to clear any outstanding fees balances. The university, just like other learning institutions in the country, shut down its doors in the wake of the covid-19 pandemic outbreak in the country; in mid-March.
“You are all advised to pay fees for the May-August semesterbefore commencement of your studies on Monday, 25th May 2020. Any student who will still be having a fee balance by Monday, 25th May 2020 will only have two weeks to clear the balance. Please do not allow yourself to be locked out of the classroom due to late fee payment since no student will be allowed to proceed with studies without completing all the May-August semester fees.” says the university’s Vice Chancellor.
In a break from the norm, students will not be reporting to school but will have their studies via the E-learning platform.
“Please note that the University has invested heavily putting together the best e-learning infrastructure for teaching and learning, and has also invested heavily in building capacity of the staff involved in e-learning. You are therefore assured of smooth learning through the e-learning mode of study.” adds the Vice Chancellor.
The university joins other institutions that have rolled out e-learning services as the current guidelines from the government prohibit social gatherings.
The education Ministry is running daily lessons for learners in primary schools and secondary schools.
The country is awaiting for the release of a report that is being compiled by the national covid-19 education response committee on how to safely reopen basic learning institutions and when.
Some National polytechnics in the country include Kisumu, Kabete, Meru, Mombasa, Nyeri, Kisii, Sigalagala, North Eastern and Kitale among others.
Speaking to press in her Office, the institute’s principal Loice Kuti said the management has put measures in place to elevate Sang’alo to a national Polytechnic so that it can serve more students and impact them with required skills. Kuti said that the government has embarked on a rebranding campaign to change residents’ mindsets about Technical training institutes, saying that there has been a lot of stigma on the people who used to take courses in these institutes in the past.
She said in order to attain Kenya vision 2030 and the big four agenda; housing, healthcare, manufacturing and food security in the country, the government now prefers technical courses which are hands on which are offered in Vocational training centres and technical training institutes.
She further said that Sang’alo Institute of Science and Technology (SIST) is a public institute situated in Bungoma County, seven kilometres from Bungoma town. The Institute which was established in 1977 has more than 500 acres of land that is adequate for it to be expanded to a national polytechnic.
The principal added that with an enrollment of 4,900 students before the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic, the institution began by offering purely agricultural courses but later started offering other Technical and Business courses.
She affirmed that Sang’alo Institute promotes a cooperative, positive and safe learning environment which ensures that the education of each student is the heart of the institutes’ operation.
She added that the institute has advanced plans with GIZ Kenya to train youths in short courses, such as apiculture to give them knowledge in scientific bee keeping, whereby bees will be bred commercially in apiaries in places where there are sufficient bee pastures to produce honey the most valuable nutritional food and wax.
She added that the institute has ten beehives which will be increased with time so that youths can be taught modern apiculture skills.
“Through partnerships with the community, the Institute enables students to become responsible citizens who are productive members of the community,’’ she noted.
She noted that bees wax is used in the cosmetic and medical industry because it has medical value, it is also used in making candles, preparing shoe polish, furniture, coating for cheeses and as food additive.
“We have not operated at full capacity for we have 3,600 students right now. We have been forced to buy tents and these challenges have an expenditure which was not planned for as well as a change of culture, which is not easy to adjust to due to the outbreak of Covid-19,’’ she said.
Other programmes that the institutes offer include; dairy farming, rabbit keeping, poultry and intensive maize farming.
The government through the Ministry for Higher Education has continued to enhance and invest in infrastructural developments in public universities across the country.
According to the Principal Secretary for University Education and Research, Amb. Simon Nabukwesi, the government has lined up major projects in the universities to boost student enrolment, teaching and research in higher education.
He said this is informed by the increasing demand for university education hence underscored the need to have the projects set up and rolling to ease congestion and accommodate the number of learners joining higher education.
He spoke at the Laikipia University when he inspected on-going development projects meant for laboratory, administration, libraries and lecture rooms where some of them have also stalled due to funding challenges.
However, the PS observed that high enrollment of primary schools, and 100 per cent transition from secondary schools, has forced institutions of higher learning and the government to initiate and increase these projects.
“Kenya has more than 40 universities, but the surging number of students seeking higher education has exceeded the capacity of existing facilities, especially in the seven public universities, locking out thousands of potential undergraduates.
“Education experts and university administrators have argued that additional enrolment can only be handled if the government pumps more funds into higher education, so institutions can afford to expand educational and boarding infrastructure and hire extra tutors,” said Nabukwesi.
On the other hand, the PS attributed issues of resources mismanagement in universities to high pending bills and underfunding as a result of competing priorities.
Laikipia University Vice Chancellor Kibet Rotich said there is a need for improved research in university education and mentoring of staff to enable them to deliver on their teaching and research activities.
“There is a dire need to increase collaboration with other entities across the world in an effort to enhance learning,” said Rotich.
However, he observed that infrastructural development was a major challenge at the university noting that some projects have taken too long to be completed and called on the government to intervene to ensure they are completed to hasten provision of sufficient space for research, space for students to learn and sufficient space for lecturers’ offices.
He lamented that stalled projects have hampered realization of the intended purpose and this has forced students to learn under incomplete lecture halls.
