TSC lists the new training areas and subjects for teachers under CBC

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has announced new training areas for teachers. According to the Commission, teachers will be retrained on new learning areas as the Competency Based Curriculum goes into full swing.

The Teachers Service Commission has identified the special areas of training for teachers who will be involved in junior and secondary school learning.

CEO Nancy Macharia, in an advisory to the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education on Curriculum Development, said the new content areas will enable learners to make decisions based on their interests, strengths and personalities.

Biology and Chemistry teachers will be retooled on how to handle Integrated Science and Health Science while Physics and Mathematics teachers on how to teach Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education.

Geography, History and CRE teachers will be trained on Social Studies, according to the advisory.

Elective subjects will include Visual Arts (Fine Art, Photography), Performing Arts (Music, Dance), Home Science, Computer Science, Foreign Languages, Kenyan Sign Language and Indigenous Languages.

“The purpose of the Commission’s Advisory on the teacher preparation and requirements is to facilitate a smooth implementation of the Junior and Senior School curriculum delivery,” Dr Macharia said in the letter dated July 2021.

Dr Macharia called for the allocation of enough funds to facilitate retooling and training of teachers.

Kagumo, Kibabii and Lugari teacher colleges, the TSC suggested, should enrol students to pursue the new subjects while student admissions to universities should be informed by the new subject areas.

TSC provides training to more than 291,000 teachers for effective CBC implementation

Editor’s Preview: TSC provides training to more than 291,000 teachers to ensure the effective implementation of the CBC.

The Teachers Service Commission has provided training to over 291,134 teachers to effectively implement the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

During the National Conversation on Competency-Based Education (CBE), Peter Kega, a director at TSC, mentioned that among the 291,134 trained teachers, 229,292 are from primary schools, 60,642 are from junior secondary schools, and 1,200 are from teacher training institutions as of April 25th, 2024.

Kega stated that the training has given the teachers the skills needed to improve the implementation of CBE, and they actively participate in the curriculum development process.

After completing the trainings, teachers receive ongoing professional support to ensure continuous improvement. The government has provided professional support to 7,200 teachers nationwide.

The government’s Digital Literacy Programme (DLP) is focused on incorporating technology into education, particularly in schools, and has made notable progress in rolling out the initiative nationwide.

The commission is providing training to teachers on the Digital Literacy Programme to improve their skills. Approximately one thousand teachers have already received this training. Remote training methods are being used, allowing teachers to participate without being in a traditional classroom setting. Various strategies are utilized to manage learners during this remote training.

Digital literacy involves teachers from schools with good resources using live streaming technology to share their classes with other institutions. Currently, there are 180 satellite schools where students receive live lessons from 30 primary schools that conduct teaching remotely.

The Teaching Service Commission (TSC) has hired a total of 76,765 teachers for junior schools. Out of these, 56,765 teachers have been hired on a permanent and pensionable basis. Additionally, 20,000 teachers are working as interns. Some primary school teachers are qualified to teach in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and have been assigned to work there.
