Kipkeibon Mixed Secondary School in Nandi County

The government has opened a new state of the art learning facility in Emgwen constituency for community use.

Kipkeibon Mixed Secondary School comes as a sigh of relief to students who have been covering an average of four kilometers to access the nearest secondary school.

The learning institution is expected to accommodate learners from several villages from humble background and also decongest the nearby overpopulated secondary schools.

The Sh25 million project funded by NG-CDF comprise of eight classrooms and several offices. It has already admitted the first batch of students.

Area Member of Parliament Alexander Kosgey asked parents to take children to the new school immediately.

“I heard the pleas of the parents and gave it an utmost priority, I am glad that finally, the school is ready for occupancy by our students,” he said during the function.

Locals had petitioned the legislator three years ago to put up a school in the area to save their children from walking many kilometers to pursue education.

The MP said the new school was in line with the government’s plan to expand existing infrastructure and build new schools in a bid to decongest learning institutions in the county.

“We have reduced the time and distance students used to get to school. I call upon local administrators to work closely with the community to ensure the school attracts more learners,” he said.

Kapsabet Zone Curriculum Support Officer Jane Misoi who was present at the event, lauded the initiative saying it will contribute to government’s 100 per cent transition to secondary education.

Parents present called upon education stakeholders to ensure they post in teachers registered by Teachers Service Commission.

“The school has about five teachers employed by the school board. We are calling upon the government to post in more teachers to ensure our students receive quality education,” said Ruth Koech.

One of the students expressed her happiness noting that she can now pursue her dream of becoming a nurse.

“We can now learn without difficulties of being rained on or trekking for many kilometers to go to school. Our dream has come true,” said Bernard Kiptoo.

Teremi School Alumni Want Students’ Welfare Improved

Friends School, Teremi Boy’s High School in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County old boys have expressed concern at the dilapidated infrastructure in the school.

Led by Eng. Boniface Munyole, the alumni are demanding that students’ welfare in their once prestigious school be improved to boost morale and enhance the school’s performance in national examinations.

According to them, the Friends Church sponsored learning institution’s image is shameful, considering that the school is ranked as an Extra-County School.

Speaking to the press, Eng. Munyole who sat for his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination in 1989, said the school needs urgent improvement of existing infrastructure to offer a conducive environment for learners.

He asked the School Management to involve old boys directly in efforts to develop the school infrastructure.

Manyole said despite the fact that Teremi Boys is an academic giant in Western Kenya, the gate alone which should act as a mirror gives the school a bad image.

The School has a population of over 2,000 boys, sharing very old and limited facilities. He called on all old boys to join the Old Boys Association and support the school.

“If we can come together as a team to support our old school, the school will automatically post better results in subsequent exams,” he said.

He said Bungoma Senator, Moses Wetang’ula, who is an old boy at the school has registered as a member.

Manyole said the other objective of the Association is to network and find placement for students after school.

“We help students get good colleges, universities and TVET institutions,” he said. In the 2020 KCSE exam, 527 students who registered and sat the exam and obtained a mean score of 7.08.

He appealed to the community around the school, Board of Management (BOM), teachers, non-teaching staff and education stakeholders to continue supporting the school.

He thanked the Friends Church ‘Quakers’ for laying a good Christian foundation in the school which has greatly motivated the boys. Munyole said that this year’s mean target is 9.0.

He said that the old boy’s Association is already planning for a funds drive that will involve all Alumni to raise funds to facilitate the construction of a modern school gate.

He said a recent audit done by the Ministry of Education ranked Teremi Boys High School as having poor infrastructure compared to other schools.

He said the playing grounds in the school are poorly drained, asking for the government’s intervention.

Ministry Of Education Guidelines On Drug Abuse Among Learners

The Ministry of Education has released guidelines on what is to be done if a learner is confirmed to be abusing drugs. Indiscipline and school unrest have largely been attributed to drugs and substance abuse among learners in primary and secondary schools.

Drug and Substance Abuse (DSA) is the excessive, inappropriate, or illegal use of substances or drugs through methods that are harmful and can alter the normal functioning of the body and can have secondary effects on others.

Categories of drugs commonly abused include hallucinogens, narcotics, alcohol, inhalants, tobacco products and psychotropic drugs.

These substances can be inhaled, injected, smoked, consumed, absorbed via a patch on the skin, or dissolved under the tongue, causing changes in the body.

Drug and Substance Abuse (DSA) is a major global concern, and young people, both in school and out-of-school, are more vulnerable.

Steps to be taken if a learner is confirmed to be abusing drugs

  • The school shall inform the parent/guardian as soon as possible.
  • The learner shall be put in a guidance and counselling programme by the guidance and counselling teacher and/or referred to appropriate organisations, which provide professional counselling and rehabilitation services in consultation with parents/guardians.
  • Schools shall document communication with the concerned learner and parents/guardians explaining the school re-entry policy.

What is to be done if a learner is found to be engaging in drug trafficking.

In case a learner is found in possession of, or trafficking drugs/substance, the school management shall:

  • Notify the parent/guardian of the learner.
  • Notify relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Education Office, local administration, police and Children’s Department to handle the case in accordance with applicable laws.
  • In collaboration with relevant authorities, support the learner in possession of drugs or substances to reveal the source(s) and name other accomplices.

Re-entry of learners who dropped out of school due to Drug and Substance use

A learner shall be re-admitted to the school upon confirmation of rehabilitation and vetting.

In case of a relapse, a learner shall be allowed re-entry as long as she/he is within the mandatory schooling age.

The school shall provide the concerned learner and parents/guardians with necessary guidance.
