Yes, CoronaVirus is not a death sentence: Read this inspiring story

The CoronaVirus (COVID-19) pandemic has taken the whole World by a storm. No single person is safe from this deadly virus. For Bjonda Haliti (a 22 year old American Lady from California), she is smarting out perfectly from the disease. Read her moving story, below, as shared on Twitter;

“I’m 22 years old and I tested positive for COVID-19.

I’ve been debating on posting, but I want to share my experience especially with those around my age to help bring awareness, and to relieve any stress/anxiety some may have due to the pandemic.

Day 1: It started with a mild DRY cough and a slightly sore throat. I was very tired that night.

Day 2: I felt a lot of pressure in my head to the point I would have to cough softly to avoid the discomfort. That night, I experienced the chills and had a fever. One main symptom that stood out to me, my eyes physically hurt. They were tender and sore.

Moving them was uncomfortable. Doing some research I discovered this was just a migraine, but it didn’t go away at ALL. I slept all day.

Day 3: Energy levels VERY low, I only slept, and still ran fevers. At this point, my symptoms were: dry cough, migraine, fever, chills, some nausea. I decided to go to the doctors where I tested negative for the flu and strep.

The doctor told me I probably just had an infection and prescribed me antibiotics and 800mg of ibuprofen. I made sure to stay extremely hydrated and stocked up on vitamins and probiotics. That night, I still ran a fever.

Day 4: Finally no more fever, but a new symptom showed up: shortness of breath. It was uncomfortable, it felt like I had bricks on my chest. I tried the self diagnose test I read online (hold your breath and count to 10) which I successfully did with no complications.

At this point I wanted to test for corona like I should have been in the first place, but It was very difficult to get tested for it!!! I continued to self-quarantine and hydrate hydrate HYDRATE!

Day 5: Symptoms: sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. I went to the same doctor and I was very adamant about getting tested. Doctor said my vitals were “unremarkable” but I wasn’t going to take no for an answer! I also requested chest X-rays, everything came out normal.

I was advised to continue self quarantine, and I would receive my results in 5-6 DAYS!!!!!

Day 6: With the continued use of antibiotics and ibuprofen, my symptoms were: sore throat, cough, shortness of breath. My energy levels began to increase.

Day 7: Symptoms: slight sore throat, mild cough, shortness of breath. Energy levels increasing.

Day 8: Symptoms: Mild cough, starting to feel like myself again. Energy!

Day 9: Symptoms: My cough was a little heavier, normal energy levels.

Day 10: Symptoms: Mild cough, mucus, normal energy levels. My lab results came in: POSITIVE.

I am continuing to self-isolate and take care of myself. Today I am feeling great and healthy! I will need to retest in order to be cleared. That’s if I can find a doctor whose willing to retest me. Haven’t had any luck so far.

My DM’s (Direct Message) will be open to those who have questions, I hope this was helpful. I wanted to let ppl know that if I got through it, so can you!!! Don’t panic if you are feeling symptoms. Take initiative and follow CDC (Centre For Disease Control) guidelines. We’re going to get through this!

Hey guys, thank you so much for your love and support! I am trying to respond to every message and will dedicate the rest of my self isolation to getting back to everyone. Thank you for your patience

I just want to let everyone know that I have been self isolating at HOME as recommended by my doctor. Here’s a picture of the liquids I’ve been taking to stay hydrated! I can’t stress enough how important it is to HYDRATE! Water is most important!

It’s been brought to my attention ibuprofen could worsen symptoms. As stated, I was prescribed these for a bacterial infection BEFORE I was tested for COVID19. I was taking ibuprofen until day 4 where I no longer felt it was necessary.

Everyone is asking how I contracted COVID-19. I don’t know. But I did go out on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and my cough started on Sunday. I believe I was exposed to it at the bar/club one of those days. That’s my guess.

Hence the importance of social distancing! This was at the beginning of the month.

YES I informed everyone I had been in contact with. It was the first thing I did!”

What a moving story!

2020 KCSE Instructions and Guidelines for Group Four Subjects’ Practicals/ Projects

The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, has released the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examinations’ instructions for subjects with projects/ practicals. Via a circular dated 20th January, 2020, the examination council instructs examination centres to download instructions for this year’s projects/ practicals via its official portal at: http://www.knec-portal.ac.ke

“The 2020 KCSE examination will commence with group IV subjects which have a project component; Art and Design (442/3), Agriculture (443/3), wood work (444/2), Metal Work (445/2), Building Construction (446/2) and Computer Studies (451/3),” reads, in part, the Circular by Dr. Mercy Karogo, the Acting Chief Executive Officer to the Council.

In the circular, the projects’ timelines have been given thus:

Timelines for the 2020 KCSE Practical/ Project Based Examinations.

To download the instructions, schools and Sub- county Directors of Education are advised to log onto the KNEC. “All school principals and Sub- county Directors of Education (in of private candidates) with candidates who have registered for the subjects (Project based subjects; group 4) are required to log onto the KNEC Website: http://www.knec-portal.ac.ke and click on 2020 Project/ Practical button to download all the instructions related to the subjects the candidates are registered for,” Dr Karogo says.

MILESTONES

In order to ensure that the projects/ practicals are being carried out as per the outlined timelines, KNEC has maintained the two innovations (introduced in 2019) relating to the assessment of the group iv subjects. “The projects’ assessment will have two (02) key milestones, which must be completed by March 31st and July 15th, 2020,” Dr Karogo says.

KNEC says that the subject teachers are expected to upload candidates’ scores and pictorial evidence (portfolio) on the project portal; at the end of each milestone. This is a deviation from the past where subject teachers uploaded collated students’ scores at the end of the practical/ project period; mostly in September/ October. “The Pictorial evidence should be photographs of the candidates with their work, in either Graphics Interface Format (.gif) or JPEG (.jpg) format (These two are photograph formats obtained by using a digital Camera). Each candidate’s pictorial evidence should show the candidate’s name and KCSE examination index number,” Karogo explains.

This is in a bid by the Council to discourage last minute rushes and allegations that impersonators assist candidates in executing the projects/ practicals. “The Kenya National Examinations Council will closely monitor the project progress and authenticity of the scores of all project/ practical for the candidates who registered for the 2020 KCSE examination in the school at different times in the course of project/ practical implementation. The school and individual candidates will be expected to compile and maintain a portfolio (file) of evidence on the progress of the project work to be presented to the monitoring officers,” KNEC warns.

The registration exercise for candidates wishing to sit the 2020 national examinations is ongoing and expected to come to a close on 15th February, 2020.

FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS

According to KNEC, a User Manual will be available on the KNEC Portal to guide on how to log into the projects portal to download the advance instructions, key the candidates’ scores, upload photographic evidence, download and print reports on the Milestones.

Further, the First Milestone must be keyed in by March 31st and the Second Milestone by July 15, 2020. The Portal will only be accessible for keying and uploading milestone one scores from 1st March to 31st March, 2020. While, scores for Milestone two are to be uploaded between June 15 and July 15, 2020.

A fine of Sh500 per candidate will be charged if the scores are not captured online, as stipulated.

SPONSORED IMPORTANT LINKS:
2.0 PRACTICALS
The advance instructions for Art and Design Paper 2 (442/2) and Computer Studies (451/2) practical papers will be uploaded on the schools’ project portal to enable schools to prepare materials in time for the examinations by 30th September, 2020.

Keying in of candidates’ scores for KCSE examination papers with Oral and Aural components for French Paper 3 (501/3), German Paper 3 (502/3), Arabic Paper 3 (503/3), Kenyan Sign Language Paper 3 (504/3) and Music Paper 1 (511/1) shall be done by the assessors after the assessment of the candidates on the examination day.

Keying in of Home Science practical (441/3) candidates’ scores shall be done by Subject Teachers after the assessment of the candidates on the examination day.

EVIDENCE OF UPLOADED SCORES

All schools and Sub-County Directors of Education (for private candidates) are expected to download the candidates’ Scores Report (in Pdf format) and print a hard copy of the uploaded scores for each milestone and maintain it as evidence.

HOST CENTRE FOR PRIVATE CANDIDATES

The Sub County Directors of Education should identify the schools that will host the private candidates for the project/practical work and inform KNEC in writing.

CHOGORIA GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The school was started in 1922 by a missionary from the Presbyterian Church of Scotland, Dr. Clive Irvine, who also founded the church and the hospital. It started as a preparatory grade mixed school. In 1952 it achieved the title of Primary School and Junior School.

In 1953, the Junior School was terminated and Intermediate School was introduced. The school continued with its co-education that had its classrooms at Chogoria Boys Secondary and dormitories at Chogoria Girls Secondary School. All this time its catchment area was the whole of the old Meru and Embu Districts.

In 1965, the idea of a secondary school came into the minds of the local people and the intermediate section was slowly phased out. In the same year, the girls joined the boys to carry on with co-education.

In 1968 the school headmaster decided to separate boys from girls and this gave birth to Chogoria Girls Secondary School with its first headteacher Mrs. Charity Mugo.

In 1969, the girls moved to the present 20-acre site. The physical facilities were quite inadequate but through the efforts of the local community, the P.C.E.A church and assistance from the government and parents the school grew. It continued as a single stream (160 students) up to 1979 when the second stream was born. In 1980 the Advanced level (‘A’ level), Arts stream was started.

From 1980 the school continued with two streams in ordinary level ‘O’ and one stream ‘A’ level Arts. The ‘A’ level stream was phased out in 1989 when the education system in Kenya was changed to 8-4-4 system. The third stream in` O’ level was then started in 1990.

In 1996 the fourth stream was started and soon after (2001) the fifth stream was born.

The student population as at November 2011 stood at 930, with 53 trained teachers (7 of whom are employed by the Board of Governors) and 49 non-teaching staff members.

The school was established in 1927 as a primary school for both boys and girls who were learning in four mud walled classrooms for standards 1 and 2. The standard three (3) classrooms were constructed in 1933. In 1945 classes were constructed for standard four (4) and five (5). The school started offering the common entrance examination which was taken at the end of class four (4). The standard six (6) class was constructed in 1952 and the first KAPE candidates sat the examination in 1954 which is the same year that the first permanent building was constructed in the school. Those learners who went up to standard six (6) were thereafter being trained as P4 teachers.
