Candidates sitting the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) and the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exams have been told to remain focused. On Saturday Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha asked the over 1.9 million candidates not to panic. He said the ministry has considered their long absence from school due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Prof Magoha said the examinations will be student friendly adding that the examiners who set the KCPE and KCSE exams have considered the effects of the long break.
While urging calm, the CS noted that schools have adequately covered the syllabus.
“Syllabus coverage has been done so there is no need for anxiety…. Do not worry about the examination. We are aware you were at home for nine months, so your hope must remain alive. Do not get stressed. If you believe in God, you will all pass” Magoha told journalists.
The Cabinet Secretary was touring schools in the Western region; including Chavakali Boys’ Secondary School in Vihiga County.
He dismissed reports of leaks, saying the exam questions have not found their way to the market, where parents and students are likely to purchase test papers from people claiming to have them.
The KCSE 2020 exams will be done between March 26th and 21st April, this year (2021). The marking exercise will be conducted for three weeks; between 19th April and 5th May.
On the other hand, the KCPE tests will be written for three days; from 22.03.2021 to 24.03.2021.
Education CS Prof. George Magoha speaks to learners of Chavakali High School, Vihiga County. The CS advised the learners not to panic but to contextualize the KCSE exams set to commence later in March, this year.
Cheating hot spots
People deceiving parents and candidates about selling examination papers risk getting arrested, he added.
Prof Magoha also issued a warning for Isebania, Kisii and Migori, saying they are on the ministry’s radar as it fights exam cheating and other irregularities.
He discouraged the candidates from copying, saying each of them is intelligent.
“I am moving around to encourage students. They are ready for the examinations,” the CS said.

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha, on February 2, 2021 appointed Mrs. Agnes Mercy Wahome as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (Kuccps) with effect from February 1, 2021. This followed a competitive recruitment process undertaken by the Board of the Placement Service in January, 2021.
Mrs. Wahome had initially been the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Placement Service since November 13, 2020 when former Chief Executive Officer John Muraguri proceeded on terminal leave ahead of retirement.
Mrs. Wahome joined the Placement Service in 2018 as the manager in charge of research and knowledge management, a new function that she was tasked with setting up to enable the Corporation to execute one of its core functions of collecting and retaining data relating to university and college placement.
After successfully setting up the Research and Knowledge Management Department, she took a lead in the publication of the Placement Service’s inaugural career guidance book ‘The Essential Career Guide’ meant to assist secondary school students in making informed career decisions.
She has also been instrumental in coordinating and monitoring the implementation and reporting of the organisation’s Performance Contract and Strategic Plan.
She brings to the new role a wealth of experience garnered in over 27 years while serving in the public and private sectors, including local and international NGOs.
She has managed programmes for numerous international development organisations including USAID, Oxfam Netherlands (Novib), the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Elton John Foundation. She has also served as a research consultant for Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (USA), ACF (France) and Pathfinder International.
An international scholar and researcher, she is an alumnus of the Dutch Embassy and Sweden’s government agency for development cooperation (SIDA) education scholarships.
Mrs. Wahome is a graduate of the University of Nairobi (Master of Arts in Medical Sociology and a BA in Sociology and Communication). She is also the first-ever PhD candidate in Health Communication at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.
As the second Chief Executive Officer at the Placement Service, her immediate focus is to work with the Board to embark on the development of the second Strategic Plan for the organisation; revamp career guidance programmes and enhance partnerships for the same; review the placement criteria in consultation with stakeholders, and initiate preparations for the alignment of student placement with the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).
The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service is a state corporation established under the Universities Act No. 42 of 2012.
Its mandate is to coordinate the placement of Government sponsored students to universities and colleges; disseminate information on available programmes, their costs, and the areas of study prioritised by the Government; collect and retain data relating to university and college placement; advise the Government on university and college student placement; develop career guidance programmes for the benefit of students; and perform other functions assigned under the Act.

Mawego girls secondary school was started in 1966 through the efforts of the Catholic Church for the local girls to get secondary education. The church felt that while boys had many schools in which to join form one classes, the girls also needed a place to further their education. The local community also joined hands with the church and so the school was born. Mawego Girls is located in Rachuonyo North East Division in Rachuonyo North District. The school is a provincial Girls Boarding Secondary with a capacity for 3 streams and has a total of 360 students. It could be accessed from Sondu-kisii road.

The idea of Bande Girls Secondary School was birthed in1975 by Missionary Samuel Ochola who was inspired by Ngiya Girls as she did his Missionary work there. The idea was adopted by the community to address the need of girl-child education in Nyatike Sub-county. Girl-child education was a major challenge in the area that was considered to be a semi-arid area, with a high population of uneducated girl-child facing early pregnancies and early marriages.
The School experienced a lot of instabilities in the early years of its establishment due to frequent changes of school heads. It failed to pick up well and collapsed in 1978, but the vision persistently lingered with the community. In 1984, it was revived and headed by Mr. Ben Sewe Akello up to 1988. In 1989, two teachers who were the first TSC teachers were posted in the school under the new headship of Mr. Okoth Lawrence.
In 1989, Mr. Okinyi Richard took over the headship until 1997. By 1990, Missionary Samuel Ochola of CPK blessed the school officially under the name St. Samuel Ochola Bande Girls Secondary School, but was later registered as Bande Girls Secondary school. The first candidates in 1991 were 7 students who were hosted by Rabwao Mixed as an Exam Centre and performed exceptionally well. All these years the school was not fenced and had less security and poor infrastructure.
In 1997 Mrs. Oruwo took over the headship up to 2000, then Mrs. Mudis up to 2008. These frequent changes in headship further caused instabilities in the school. The school later stabilized in the year 2008 with Mrs. Hellen Otieno as the head. The school has gradually grown from single streamed to three streamed boarding girl-school and promoted from community (Harambee) school to the current status as an Extra-county school as it continued to excel in both Academics and co-curricular activities i.e. Music, Athletics and Netball where the school has been reaching Regional for a long period now.
The academic performance of the school has gradually increased with the best achievement being at a mean of 5.8 in 2013 with 20 students attaining university grades. In 2016 we produced the best student in Migori county who attained grade A-(minus) and is currently pursuing Medicine at JKUAT. Eighteen (18) other students have pursued various career degree courses in various universities. Over the years we have formed a strong base of successful alumni, who have made the school proud in various spectra of life.
In the past, majority of the students admitted into the school were from Migori County, and more specifically from Nyatike and with relatively average entry mark. However, with its elevation to extra-county status it now admits students from all counties across the county.
The greatest achievement came when the school has realized is when it produced the leading girl in Migori County in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education( K.C.S.E) 2016 and won the Migori county Equity Bank Award for the best girl.
