KANGUBIRI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The school stands on the former Aguthi Works camp, built during the emergency as a detention camp. The officer incharge would tell the detainees that their coming to Aguthi works camp signaled their freedom hence he would tell them “come go free”. The local people corrupted the saying and talked of “Kangubiri” hence the school acquired its name Kangubiri Girls High School.

On the advent of the independent Kenya, the divisional leaders pointed out that higher education for girls was a matter of urgency. Kangubiri Girls High School was therefore started on ‘harambee’ basis and was registered in June 1965.

The first class of forty girls arrived on 20th June, 1965. In 1971, the school was granted boarding status. In 1976 a second stream was started and in 1977 the school was granted a form 3 aided class to cater for KJSE students who wanted to proceed to form 3. In 1980, the third government stream was granted thus making the school four streamed. Kangubiri is a four streamed Extra County Boarding girl’s school with a student population of about 870.

New boarding school to be constructed here

The government will construct a modern boarding primary school as part of its commitment to improve education standards in Turkana county by constructing modern primary schools and ECDEs.

The National Drought Management Authority(NDMA) is at advanced stages of constructing a modern boarding mixed primary school at Urum, Loima sub county that will ensure pupils from Turkana and West Pokot access education.

NDMA county coordinator Abdkikadir Jillo said during a meeting attended by Cabinet Secretary for Devolution Eugene Wamalwa that the concept note for the school has already been completed in collaboration with the county government.

“We have budgeted for the school and we shall commence works in the new financial year,” said Jillo.

Wamalwa said the government has constructed a similar school at Nasol, West Pokot county to foster peaceful coexistence between the Turkana and Pokot communities.

Responding to area MCA Patrick Imana who had requested to know the fate of Urum pupils whose school was blown away by wind late last year, Jillo said the project has been factored and would start in the 2021/2022 financial year.

At the same time Turkana County Deputy Governor Peter Lotethiro has said the county would construct an Early Childhood Development Education centre to cater for the growing population at Lokiriamet, in the same sub county.

The leaders were speaking in Lokiriamet during the launch of a borehole.

Reprieve for Wealth declaration non-compliant teachers as TSC extends deadline

It is a reprieve for thousands of teachers who were unable to file their 2017-2019 wealth declarations by December 31, 2019. This is after the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, extended the deadline by another one week. Via an internal memo to all County Directors (dated January 7, 2020), the Commission dispatched lists of teachers who had not uploaded their details by the earlier deadline.

The data shows that 9,855 teachers did not file their returns and hence have been given an opportunity to comply.

“Majority of employees complied within the stipulated time. However, 9,855 teachers and 120 Secretariat Staff are yet to submit their declarations, which is a contravention of the law,” reads the memo; in part.

NEW DEADLINE

Those affected will now have to utilize the chance and file their data between 8th – 14th January, 2020.

FOR A COMPLETE GUIDE TO ALL SCHOOLS IN KENYA CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW;

Here are links to the most important news portals:

The memo requires the County Directors to give a feed back on those who should have not submitted their data by end of the new deadline.

All teachers in employment of TSC are required to declare their Income, Assets and Liabilities. These include teachers on:

  • Any kind of leave
  • Interdiction
  • Suspension
  • Sick leave

Any teacher in the TSC employment who fails to submit a declaration or gives false or misleading information is liable to a fine of Kshs 1,000,000 or be imprisoned for a term not exceeding one year or both upon conviction.

By December 30, 2019, close to 96,000 teachers were yet to declare their wealth status, online as required by law.
