The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has issued a cautionary notice on the prevention of spread of Corona Virus (Covid-19) in the Commission’s offices countrywide. This warning has come at a time when the virus continues to spread claiming the lives of over 3,000 people so far; in other parts of the world.
According to an internal memo from Ibrahim G. Mumin, the TSC Director in charge of Administrative Services, the Commission’s staff should ensure all is put in place to keep the virus at bay. “The Commission will seek to create an enabling environment for prevention of the disease by ensuring thorough cleanliness of all common areas and providing hand sanitizers to be used in the offices,” says Mumin via an internal memo dated March 9, 2020.
Here are links to the most important news portals:
As part of measures to stay safe, TSC staff members have been restrained from handshakes; as a form of exchanging greetings. They should also ensure ‘Regular and thorough handwashing’.
Keeping ones surroundings including offices clean and hygienic has also been proposed by Mumin to ensure the deadly virus is prevented.
It is nearly two months since the first infection from Corona virus (also known as Covid-19) was first detected in China. The disease has spread to many continent including Africa, whose case was reported two weeks ago. The disease has been declared by the World Health Organization (WHO), a Public Health Emergency. In 1900, Rev. A.W. McGregor was sent by the Chuch Missionary Society (CMS)as a pioneer missionary to Kikuyu-Land, Rev Mc.Gregor was already involved in missionary work among the Taita in Taveta in early 1892.Thus Rev. Mc Gregor arrived in Fort Smith in Kikuyu on October 13 1990.He started looking for suitable land for missionary work. He had been offered land at site of Fort Smith bu declined due to its reputation for atrocities against against the kikuyu.
He therefore went further afield in search of a suitable site. He finally purchased a parcel of land at Kabete locally known as Mayombo (the rocky place) from Cege Kanyi of Muthemba family. He took possession of the site in 1901 and named it Kihuruko (a place of quietness and rest). He started teaching the Word of God and literacy. By November 1901, he had five students. The local people nicknamed him “Kabora”. It was on this land that Mary Leakey Girls High School really started.
In eary 1902, Rev. MC Gregor was joine d by Rev. Harry Leakey who continued with the work. Rev MC Gregor later moved to Weitahaga in Muranga a few montyhs after Rev. Harry Leakey arrived, He was joined by his wife Mary, thier two little girls and a companion Miss Oakes. The locals nicknamed Rev. Leakey “Giteru” because of his bush beard. They were teaching a mixed group of boys and girls. However school work among women and girls was slow at first.
In 1904 Miss Alicia Higgnbothan, a missionary from Mombasa, joned the Leakeys. She assisted in teaching catechism and also taught women who came for treatment from her tent. She taught them sewing and basic reading. In 1905, the Leakeys went on leave to England. Under Miss Higgnbothan, the girls class was slowly taking shape. The leakeys returned to Kabete in 1906 .
Many boys had come to the school by then and the first two girl pupils were sister of aboy pupil and an orphan under his care. They lived with Leakeys and became the nucleus of the schools for they attracte dmore pupils. In 1909, Mrs. Mary Leakey opened a schoolfor girls which met on the veranda of her house.
From that time, girls as boarders became a regular feature, for many came from up-country and others had run away from home for various reasons such as circumssion. Until 1921, Kabete was the only C.M.S. station with accomodation for boarders in Kikuyu County. The school however, never became regular due to intermittent illness of Mrs. Leakey.
In 1922, when Julia Leakey (her daughter) returned to Kabete after training in England as a teacher and a missionary in her own right, the school reopened on a regular basis.

The Commission has been running interviews for various promotional vacancies; over the past few weeks.
This latest directive comes after the President ordered for immediate closure of all learning institutions in order to curb further spread of the disease.
It is not only TSC operations that will be paralyzed. Most organizations have been forced to shut down operations as they wait and see what happens next.
“We have suspended learning in all our education institutions with immediate effect. Consequently, and to facilitate a phased approach, primary and secondary day schools are to suspend operations from tomorrow,” said President kenyatta on Sunday evening in his address to the Nation.
“For those in boarding schools, the school administration is to ensure that students are home by Wednesday, 18th March 2020 while Universities and Tertiary Institutions are to close by Friday, 20th March 2020,” added the head of state.
The President at the same time urged government offices, businesses and companies to allow employees to work from home, with the exception of employees working in critical or essential services.
The President exuded confidance that the Corona Pandemic will be defeated in due course. “This pandemic will test us, as it is testing all countries in every corner of the world, but I do not believe it will defeat us. If we pull together, and everybody does their part, we shall overcome its worst impacts,” an optimistic Uhuru said.

The idea of Bande Girls Secondary School was birthed in1975 by Missionary Samuel Ochola who was inspired by Ngiya Girls as she did his Missionary work there. The idea was adopted by the community to address the need of girl-child education in Nyatike Sub-county. Girl-child education was a major challenge in the area that was considered to be a semi-arid area, with a high population of uneducated girl-child facing early pregnancies and early marriages.
The School experienced a lot of instabilities in the early years of its establishment due to frequent changes of school heads. It failed to pick up well and collapsed in 1978, but the vision persistently lingered with the community. In 1984, it was revived and headed by Mr. Ben Sewe Akello up to 1988. In 1989, two teachers who were the first TSC teachers were posted in the school under the new headship of Mr. Okoth Lawrence.
In 1989, Mr. Okinyi Richard took over the headship until 1997. By 1990, Missionary Samuel Ochola of CPK blessed the school officially under the name St. Samuel Ochola Bande Girls Secondary School, but was later registered as Bande Girls Secondary school. The first candidates in 1991 were 7 students who were hosted by Rabwao Mixed as an Exam Centre and performed exceptionally well. All these years the school was not fenced and had less security and poor infrastructure.
In 1997 Mrs. Oruwo took over the headship up to 2000, then Mrs. Mudis up to 2008. These frequent changes in headship further caused instabilities in the school. The school later stabilized in the year 2008 with Mrs. Hellen Otieno as the head. The school has gradually grown from single streamed to three streamed boarding girl-school and promoted from community (Harambee) school to the current status as an Extra-county school as it continued to excel in both Academics and co-curricular activities i.e. Music, Athletics and Netball where the school has been reaching Regional for a long period now.
The academic performance of the school has gradually increased with the best achievement being at a mean of 5.8 in 2013 with 20 students attaining university grades. In 2016 we produced the best student in Migori county who attained grade A-(minus) and is currently pursuing Medicine at JKUAT. Eighteen (18) other students have pursued various career degree courses in various universities. Over the years we have formed a strong base of successful alumni, who have made the school proud in various spectra of life.
In the past, majority of the students admitted into the school were from Migori County, and more specifically from Nyatike and with relatively average entry mark. However, with its elevation to extra-county status it now admits students from all counties across the county.
The greatest achievement came when the school has realized is when it produced the leading girl in Migori County in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education( K.C.S.E) 2016 and won the Migori county Equity Bank Award for the best girl.
