Shortcut to faster TSC employment

Perhaps you have been tarmacking too long after graduating with your Diploma or Bachelors Degree in Education. Maybe your efforts to get employed by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, have been in vain after attempting several times. And you are at the blink of giving up on the teaching profession. You are not alone my dear friend. There are thousands of graduate teachers out there who find themselves in this precarious situation. I met this graduate teacher, sometimes back, who was so desperate for TSC employment. The teacher was willing to pay the price if only there could be assurance of clinching that elusive TSC job. After many years of attending interviews, in vain, the teacher was so disappointed that all this while there was no chance of getting into the TSC payroll.

Many desperate graduate teachers have fallen prey to conmen and women who promise to deliver TSC employment leeters. Truth be told these fraudsters have no connections at the Commission and hence end up piling more misery on the desperate job seekers. The process of recruiting teachers in Kenya is crystal clear and in fact it is done in a transparent manner. The process is flawless and one is allowed to launch a complaint to the Commission head office if she/ he is shortchanged during the recruitment process.

But, did you know that you can enhance your chances of getting TSC employment ahead of your competitors? It is so easy. Consider the following and maximize your chances.

TSC MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Before you dive into the teaching profession, ensure that you have read and understood the current minimum requirements for one to be certified by TSC. For example, if you are intending to pursue a Bachelors of Education Degree Programme you must have scored a minimum of a C+ in each of the two teaching subjects you wish to teach at high school. This requirement has locked out many graduates. For instance, if want to be a Maths/ Physics Teacher then you must have a minimum of a C+ in each of these two subjects. Again, it is prudent that you choose your teaching subjects carefully.

In short, select the two subjects where you have performed well. This is because in case of a tie during the TSC recruitment interviews, then the panelists will consider the performance of the tying applicants at KCSE. For complete information on all the current TSC registration and recruitment guidelines, click on this link; New: Academic and Professional Requirements for Registration of Teachers.

SUBJECT COMBINATION

The subjects you choose to study at the university or college play a significant role in terms of how fast you will be absorbed by TSC. I never to to say this but some subjects are more marketable than others. This is simply because some subjects are flooded with unemployed graduates. Some of the most marketable subjects, currently, can be found on this link; Most Marketable TSC Subjects, Best TSC Employment Subjects, TSC employment readily availabe.

PERFORMANCE AT KCSE AND UNIVERSITY/ COLLEGE

Your KCSE mean grade sometimes come in handy during TSC recruitment sessions. In case two applicants tie, then the panelists will have a look at the candidate with stronger KCSE certificate. Strength of your diploma or degree certificate also plays a key role on the marks you garner, according to the latest TSC Recruitment guidelines and marking scheme.

PARTICIPATION IN CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.

Applicants who actively participate in Co-curricular activities have a upper hand in clinching TSC slots. Try to at least participate in one or two Co- curricular activities and ensure you are certified or given a recommendation letter to that effect.

INTERNSHIP PROGRAMMES

The Commission has enlisted the services of teachers working on the internship programme. In the past, such teachers have had an added advantage over their colleagues since TSC produced marking schemes favouring the Intern teachers.

PRESENTATION AND FIRST IMPRESSION

The first impression you create lasts longer. Be smart during interviews. Try to be eloquent. Above all be sincere.

YEARS STAYED OUT AFTER GRADUATION.

Unfortunately, or fortunately I should say, the current TSC recruitment guidelines and marking scheme favours graduates who have stayed out longer. The longer you stay out the more marks you are awarded.

Finally, do not give up. Never pay fraudsters who give false employment promises.

Bank loan borrowers to be given an extension to their repayment period: CBK Guidelines

The Central Bank, CBK, of Kenya has come to the aid of millions of Kenyans servicing bank loans who may have difficulties in krepaying the loans in time. This is in a bid to mitigate the ripple economic effects caused by the Corona virus pandemic. Borrowers will now be given an extension to their repayment by one year; if they so wish.

Following a meeting with commercial banks on Monday, March 16, 2020, the Central
Bank of Kenya (CBK) announces a set of measures that commercial banks will undertake in order to alleviate the adverse economic effects their customers may face from the Coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). While the extent of the adverse effects are still evolving, it is already evident that the impact on some of the customers may be sever,” reads a circular by the CBK dated Wednesday March 18, 2020.

CBK GUIDELINES

According to the recent CBK guidelines, to help alleviate the adverse effects, the following emergency measures will apply for borrowers whose loan repayments were up to date as at March 2, 2020:

  • Banks will seek to provide relief to borrowers on their personal loans based on their individual circumstances arising from the pandemic.
  • To provide relief on personal loans, banks will review requests from borrowers for extension of their loan for a period of up to one year. To initiate this process, borrowers should contact their respective banks.
  •  Medium-sized enterprises (SMES) and corporate borrowers can contact their banks for assessment and restructuring of their loans based on their respective circumstances arising from the pandemic.
  • Banks will meet all the costs related to the extension and restructuring of loans.
  • To facilitate increased use of mobile digital platforms, banks will waive all charges for balance inquiry.
  •  As earlier announced, all charges for transfers between mobile money wallets and bank accounts will be eliminated.

No postponement of the 2020 KCSE, KCPE exams- Uhuru promises

It is a big sigh of relief for the over 1.2 million KCSE and KCPE candidates after President Uhuru Kenyatta reassured them that this year’s examinations will not be postponed due to the current Corona virus pandemic in the country. Speaking during a live interview on Wednesday morning, the President said the Ministry of Education is churning out a work plan to ensure the exams are not disrupted even as the pandemic continues to ravage the country.

“Exams are still on as planned, but we still have to know how we shall approach this and we shall elaborate more when that time comes. We are still analysing the best way to assist our students. We will release a strategy in which our students will start going back to schools and the measures we shall implement because they (candidates) are the ones we are most concerned about,” the Head of state said.

On Sunday, Education Cabinet Secretary prof. George Magoha said his Ministry has come up with various plans on how learning is to resume and was awaiting approval by the president.

The President (who was speaking from State House, Nairobi during a live address on national Swahili radio stations: Radio Citizen, Radio Jambo, Radio Maisha, Milele FM and KBC’s Radio Taifa) said his government will soon release a schedule on how learners will return to schools especially those who are to sit the national exams. He was not categorical on when the schools are set to reopen and how.

Education cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha. The CS says this year’s national examinations will not be post-poned.
Stake holders hold divergent views

The kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Kuppet, has been rooting for postponement of the national tests saying the education calendar should be redrafted to cater for lost time. Its sister union, Knut, is holding a different opinion that learning should resume under stringent health measures.

On their part, school heads want reopened for not only form fours and class eight pupils, but also for class seven pupils and form three students. The Kenya Secondary Schools Heads Association (Kessha) chair Indimuli Kahi has said it will be possible to have the fewer learners in school for now since social distancing would be feasible.

Education stake holders will be waiting, anxiously, for the Government’s work plan even as the clock ticks, fast, towards the May 2, 2020, date; which would have been the official reopening date for second term.
