ASUMBI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Asumbi Girls’ High School was started on 19th March 1936, by the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Saint Joseph as Lower Boarding Primary school, with a small population of pupils, sponsored by the Mill Hill missionaries of the then Catholic Diocese of Kisumu.

The school progressed and became an intermediate school going up to std VIII. In 1965 the first form one students were admitted. Three years later in 1968, the primary section was phased out. The following year 1969 the first secondary students sat their “ O” Level examinations.

Those who passed well proceeded to “A” Level Art class in 1970. in 1979 Science class of “A” Level added to the existing Art class. With the introduction of the 8-4-4 system of education, the “A” level classes were phased out in 1989. The school is a four streamed public provincial Girls boarding secondary school.

The school sits on 20 acres of land. From this humble beginning, Asumbi Girls’ Secondary School became a full-fledged Government maintained School in 1965 managed by Board of governors legally constituted by the Ministry of Education.

The school has maintained it’s a Catholic tradition. The school’s sponsorship has been passed on from the management of initial Catholic Diocese of Kisumu to the Catholic Diocese of Kisii and presently it is under the sponsorship of Catholic Diocese of Homabay.

There were 13 classrooms, 6 dormitories, a dining hall, a kitchen, ablution blocks, and three teacher’s houses. The Kenya Government through the World Bank helped the school to build 4 dormitories block and four blocks of the Teaching staff houses.

Return all the transferred non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity- TSC asked

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has been asked to revoke the recent transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa over insecurity. Ijara Constituency Member of Parliament Hon.Sophia Abdi Noor has castigated the Commission for taking unilateral decisions by transferring the teachers and leaving learners from the North Eastern Region unattended.

“I have today (Tuesday February 4, 2020) joined my fellow leaders from,Garissa, Wajir and Mandera to discuss the insecurity in the region and the mass exodus of the teachers from the region initiated by the TSC unilaterally without consulting the leadership and even their agents in the field. Whereas we condemn in the strongest possible terms the inhuman acts of terror we as a country should not have fallen into their traps by transferring all the TSC teachers in the region without replacement and in the process creating an educational crisis. We are strongly asking the TSC to revoke all the transfers immediately,” says Hon Abdi.

This comes after TSC announced the transfers of all non-local teachers from Garissa County over insecurity related issues. The Commission is at the same time processing the transfers of teachers working in Mandera and Wajir counties. The transfers have been occasioned by the constant attacks from the terror group Al-Shabaab. The group has been unleashing terror attacks on the non local teachers since 2018.

But, the Legislator now says the local leaders will work closely with the communities’ members to ensure security of the teachers. “On our part as leaders we will encourage our communities to share timely information and intelligence with our security forces so that we can secure our borders,” She adds.

Angry ijara residents have been staging protests (since Monday) over the mass transfers of the teachers from the area.
“The Ijara residents express their disappointment and dissatisfaction with the Commission and the Government in general. While the residents already suffer greatly in the hands of the outlawed terrorist group, the reactive decisions often made rub salt onto the wound,” Hon Abdi explains.

The MP is said to have allegedly stormed the local TSC office and locked it on Monday.

According to her, Parents are worried that the TSC’s decision to transfer teachers will only worsen the already dire education and security situation as idle children will now be exposed to radicalization. She says the decision will further encourage the terror groups in conducting more heinous attacks as the Government now appears “ weak.”

Teachers who have fled the region have vowed never to go back.

MUTHAMBI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Muthambi Girls high school was established in 1967 by the Consolata Catholic Missionaries following the industrious initiative of Reverend Father Julius Kathure who hailed from the then Chuka Parish. The school sits on acreage of approximately twenty five (25) acres of land which is spacious ground that allows a variety of activities, facilities as well as freedom of movement for all. The land was voluntarily donated by the community members to accommodate the Muthambi Catholic church, Muthambi primary school and the girl’s secondary school. Some of the families that donated the land were Bonjiano, Edward and Josiphino Nyaga. Following the land adjudication by the government the school eventually acquired the twenty five acres of land (O.I. Josiphino: 11/6 2018) for its development.

The late, Rev.Fr. Kathure was the regional education secretary under the diocese of Meru.His great idea to construct this school was endorsed by a committee on 24th September 1966. The members of this team comprised the following;

  • Mr. Willie Bore………………..Chairman
  • Mr Batholomew ………………Vice Chairman
  • Rv.Fr. Julius Kathure…………Treasurer
  • Mr Robert Miriti…………………Hon. Secretary
  • Mr. Benjamin Baini……………..Committee member
  • Mr Gabriel Njeru…………………. ’’
  • Mr Bernard Gichunge…………… ’’
  • Mr Erastus M’Riba………………. ’’

  • MR Alexus Njagi………………….. ’’
  • Mr Eusebio Kaburu………………. ’’
  • Mr Elisio Njogu…………………… ’’
  • Mr Fabanio Mwihandi…………… ’’

By December 1966, other fathers came in hardy to support in establishing the school namely; Rev.Fr Andrew Mungatia, Rev. Fr. Francis Mbijiwe and Rev.Fr.Iland. They all shared in the great dream starting a girl’s secondary school. In the preliminaries, Muthambi intermediate school had given ksh 1776 to support the building of the initial facilities. This great team mobilized the community to implement the ideology of Rev. Fr. Kathure which gave rise to the school in February of the following year 1967.

In establishing this prestigious girls school Fr Kathure imbibed the mission of the Consolata missionaries to evangelize and educate non-Christians all over the world. He strongly believed in the benefit of religion and education as was advocated for by the general superior of Consolata foreign missions Giuseppe Allamano (1851-1926) in his mission statement that; ‘the people will love religion because of the promise of a better life after death but education will make them happy because it will provide a better life while on earth’(Sbacchi:1998:319).

Led by the ideology of Giuseppe Allamano, Rev. Fr Kathure selflessly took keen interest in the education of the girl child by founding Muthambi Girls which he hoped would provide a better life for them. As a great initiator, Rev. Fr.Kathure mobilized the Muthambi community and shared his great dream of starting this girl’s school. He was a missionary statesman with broad humanity, deep love, resilience and vision for educating young girls. His relentless efforts gave the people of Muthambi the first impetus towards formal education for girls.

KIJABE BOYS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Kijabe Boys High School was established in 1939 when the Missionaries concerned with literacy began a form of teacher training. In the year 1950 Kijabe became a college for teachers before it was transformed into primary school for boys. In 1962 it was converted into a boarding high school for boys.

In 1957 a boarding primary school for girls was started and later changed into a boarding girl’s high school. In 1964 the girls and boys were amalgamated into one, which grew into a three-streamed school from form one to form six offering science, arts, and technical subjects. In 1987 the school was split into a boy’s high school and a girl’s high school.
