Factors to consider before choosing an education course

Before settling on any teaching combination, it is necessary for you to do a thorough background research and consultations. Some of the main considerations that you must consider include:

  • Cluster points requirements: Various universities have different cluster points requirements for the same course. Therefore, before settling on a university to join for the teaching course, check its minimum cluster requirements in the table below.
  • Subject requirements: Apart from cluster requirements, the education degree choices have different subject requirements. Check the latest subject requirements for Bachelor of Education Science and Arts Courses in the table below.

2021 KUCCPS placement news for KCSE 2020 candidates

All the 2020 KCSE candidates will get places at Universities, after all. This ends the speculations that the Government was planning to change the minimum entry grade to university from the normal C+ (plus). The process of placing the 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) Candidates into higher institutions of learning has been started.

The candidates will now be able to know their courses and higher learning institutions they will join. The Process will be carried out by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Education Cabinet Secretary, Professor George Magoha, on Monday 24th May, launched the selection process at the Joseph Kangethe primary school in Nairobi. Over 143,149 candidates who scored the minimum university entry grade of (C+, plus and above) will secure a slot in both private and public universities under the government-sponsored programme.

The candidates with C+ (plus) and above will now jostle for the available vacancies and courses in universities. Of these; 893 scored A (plain), 6,420 had A- (minus) while, 14,427 garnered grade B+ (plus). Others were: 25,207 (B plain), 38,194 (B- minus) and 57,999 (C+ plus).

CS George Magoha says the TVET system and Universities have places for all the 747,171 candidates who sat for the 2020 KCSE exams.

Other KCSE 2020 candidates, who will not make it for the degree courses, will be placed in colleges and TVET institutions.

Previous admissions

The Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) emerged the most preferred university after leading in the numbers of new students’ admissions for the 2020/2021 academic year.

In the admissions results released by the Kenya universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KUCCPS, the institution admitted 6,006 students who sat for the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examinations. University of Nairobi, UON, cliched second spot after getting 5,894 new students. In third position was Maseno university that got a share of 5,716 admissions. Kenyatta, Kisii and Moi universities got 5,659, 5,566 and 4,948 students; respectively.

This was the third year in a row that JKUAT was taking the lion share of the new students’ slots.

Kabarak and Daystar universities were the only universities that were able to admit more students than their declared capacity. The two are private universities.

KUCCPS results for 2019 KCSE candidates

Here is the full speech by Education CS George Magoha during the release of the 2020/2021 placement of Government-sponsored students to universities and colleges;

“PLACEMENT OF THE 2019 KENYA CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY  EDUCATION (KCSE) CANDIDATES TO UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES FOR THE 2020/2021 ACADEMIC CALENDAR

The Ministry of Education, through the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), has completed the placement exercise of the 2019 KCSE candidates to various courses in Universities and Colleges.

The placement of students to universities targeted the 2019 KCSE examination group, while the placement to TVET institutions targeted both the 2019 group and youth from previous examination years dating back to 1994.

In the 2019 KCSE examination, 689,007 Kenyan citizen candidates were successfully examined. Of these, 125,463 attained mean grades of C+ and above, hence were eligible for placement to university as Government-sponsored students. The remaining 563,544
were eligible for placement to TVET programmes at Diploma, Craft Certificate and Artisan Certificate levels.

SEE ALSO;

With regard to available capacities, universities declared 145,129 vacancies for Government-sponsored students, while TVET Institutions declared 276,163.

Following the successful completion of the placement process, 122,831 candidates have secured placement to degree courses in universities while 88,724 got placed in TVET
institutions. Of those placed in TVET, 53,726 will be admitted to Diploma; 29,112 to Craft
Certificate and 5,886 to Artisan Certificate courses.

The TVET number is expected to increase once the Ministry receives returns from institutions where students may have registered directly. It is also noted that the Placement Service undertakes continuous placement of students to TVET institutions, which will further grow the enrollment.

A gender analysis of the placement to Degree courses indicate that 70,050 (57.03%) are
male and 52,781 (42.97%) female. In TVET, the male students are 39,695 (44.74%) while
the female students are 49,029 (55.26%).

The Ministry is impressed to report that 2,632 candidates who scored C+ and above in the 2019 KCSE examination and qualified for placement to Degree programmes opted for Diploma courses in TVET institutions, and were placed appropriately. This number has been
growing over time. In 2019, the number was 1,269. The growing number of these “TVET
Champions” is a clear indication that concerted efforts to improve enrolment in TVET courses are yielding fruits.

Pursuant to the Universities Act, 2012 and the Placement Policy, the Placement Service applied Affirmative Action criteria for applicants living with disabilities, those from marginalized regions and for gender.

Three hundred and thirty one (331) applicants with disabilities have been given their top
priority courses for which they met the minimum admission requirements.
In addition, specific programmes cut-off points were lowered by two for applicants from marginalized regions, and 1,638 benefited. A similar concession benefited 679 applicants
under Gender Affirmative Action (624 female, 55 male). The total number of applicants who have benefited from Affirmative Action are therefore 2,648.

This year’s placement data indicates that of the 122,831 applicants placed to Degree courses, 66,661 (54.27%) will join Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics
(STEM) programmes, which are critical for producing skilled workforce required for the attainment of the “Big Four” Agenda. The remaining 56,170 (45.73%) have been placed to
Arts and Humanities.

Of the applicants placed to STEM, 42,267 (63.41%) are male while 24,394 (36.59%) are
female.
Some degree programmes in some universities did not attract applicants. The Ministry wishes to direct the Universities offering those programmes to establish why they are not
attractive and implement corrective measures.

Students as well as universities and colleges can access the placement details through their
respective portals on the Placement Service website. Applicants will also be notified individually through Short Text Messages.

The Placement Service will conduct the Inter-Institution Transfer process online following
the laid down procedures while ensuring adherence to timelines for students who may wish to change their programmes and institutions.

Universities and colleges have been asked to contact their respective students and give them joining instructions and fast-tract the start of their academic journey given that most universities have continued with online learning during this era of COVID-19 restrictions.”

The new KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Agnes Mercy Wahome

The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Prof. George Magoha, on February 2, 2021 appointed Mrs. Agnes Mercy Wahome as the Chief Executive Officer of the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (Kuccps) with effect from February 1, 2021. This followed a competitive recruitment process undertaken by the Board of the Placement Service in January, 2021.

Mrs. Wahome had initially been the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Placement Service since November 13, 2020 when former Chief Executive Officer John Muraguri proceeded on terminal leave ahead of retirement.

Mrs. Wahome joined the Placement Service in 2018 as the manager in charge of research and knowledge management, a new function that she was tasked with setting up to enable the Corporation to execute one of its core functions of collecting and retaining data relating to university and college placement.

After successfully setting up the Research and Knowledge Management Department, she took a lead in the publication of the Placement Service’s inaugural career guidance book ‘The Essential Career Guide’ meant to assist secondary school students in making informed career decisions.

As the second Chief Executive Officer at the Placement Service, her immediate focus is to work with the Board to embark on the development of the second Strategic Plan for the organisation; revamp career guidance programmes and enhance partnerships for the same; review the placement criteria in consultation with stakeholders, and initiate preparations for the alignment of student placement with the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC).

Following the 2019 KCSE examination, the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) provided results for 689,007 Kenyan citizen candidates for placement. An analysis of the results indicated that 125,463 were eligible for placement to degree programmes and 563,544 were eligible for placement to TVET courses at diploma, craft certificate and artisan certificate levels. Four thousand, eight hundred and twenty three (4,823) were registered as non-Kenyan citizens, hence were not eligible for Kenya Government sponsorship.

RELATED NEWS

The 2020/2021 placement cycle entailed four main activities, namely the, Update and Validation of Institutional and Programme Capacities, School/Centre Application, Revision of Choices and Application Processing.

Update and Validation of Institution/Programme Capacities

The Placement Service enabled the universities and colleges admitting Government-sponsored students to access the placement system through the Institution’s Portal and update the list of the programmes and capacities available for student placement. Thereafter, the Placement Service validated the programmes with the Commission for University Education (CUE) and the TVET Authority (TVETA) – the regulators – to ensure that the programmes and the institutions are duly accredited, and that the numbers provided for admission are within the limits allowed by the regulators.

During the 2020/2021 placement cycle, 145,129 degree and 276,163 TVET programme vacancies were provided for placement.

School/Centre Application

The School/Centre Application marked the beginning of the placement process. The Placement Service invited principals of secondary schools with registered KCSE examination candidates to collect, collate and submit the candidates’ course choices/preferences.

During the School Application, 2,228 of the 10,289 registered schools/examination centres submitted their candidates’ choices/preferences, which translates to 21.65%. The Placement Board is concerned about this low participation of schools at this important step of the placement process.

To address this concern, the Board recommends to the Ministry of Education to consider issuing a policy guideline to all schools, especially those with candidates eligible for placement to TVET institutions, to ensure that they submit the applications on behalf of their KCSE candidates for university and TVET placement.

Following the School/Centre Application and the release of the KCSE results, the revision of choices was conducted in two phases.

The First Revision of Choices

The First Revision, which opened from February to March, was meant to give the students an opportunity to make better informed choices given that they had their KCSE results. Therefore, at that point, they were in a position to consider how their performance compared to the requirements of their desired courses. In addition, having left the school environment and having been exposed to some of the careers of their interest, they could benefit from the exposure in making their career choices.

All the 2019 secondary school graduates were given an opportunity to make changes to their choices from the School Application or to submit their preferences if they had not. Eligible candidates from previous years were also enabled to apply for TVET programmes.

At the same time, the Placement Service rolled out nationwide application support
and guidance to applicants by deploying its officers to 34 learning institutions
designated as application/revision centres. In addition, applicants were offered  support in 11 Huduma Centres that host KUCCPS Service Desks. This was preceded by a public sensitisation campaign through the mainstream print media, online platforms and community radio stations.

Following the processing of applications after the First Revision of Choices, applicants who were unable to secure their choices due to competition in the programmes they preferred were invited for the Second Revision of Choices.

The Second Revision of Choices

The Second Revision of Choices took place in April. During the period, the Placement Service invited the applicants who did not secure a course after the First Revision of Choices, through the mass media, SMS and online platforms, to submit fresh lists of their preferred courses selected from programmes with unfilled capacities.

Despite the prevailing public restrictions due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Placement Service successfully presided over this exercise, taking advantage of digital communication technologies to offer support and guidance to the applicants remotely. Applicants who merited at this stage were successfully placed to courses of their choice.

Final Placement Application Processing

The final application processing and approvals were undertaken after the conclusion of the Second Revision of Choices. At this stage, the Placement Service ensured that all the eligible 2019 KCSE candidates who qualified for degree and TVET programmes and successfully submitted applications got university and college places on merit. Eligible applicants from previous KCSE years who qualified were also placed to TVET programmes. Affirmative Action was applied for applicants from marginalised regions, persons with disability and gender in accordance with the Placement Policy.

Final Observations

From the just-concluded student placement process, the following observations were made:

  •  Many secondary schools or KCSE examination centres fail to submit applications for courses on behalf of their candidates, yet this is a critical first step towards the envisaged 100% transition from secondary to higher education. A policy intervention, already alluded to, is necessary to address this.
  • Low uptake of TVET courses persists, despite infrastructural expansion and other investment in the institutions. TVET institutions declared 276,163 capacities for diploma, craft certificate and artisan certificate courses and 88,724 applicants were placed, translating to 32% of the capacity.
  • Applicants who were unable to get the courses of their choice in the institutions they preferred were placed in similar courses in alternative institutions and in programmes that did not attract at least a reasonable percentage of students. This secured Government sponsorship for 43,817 applicants who would have missed it otherwise.
