Kuccps 2021/2022 students placement (Commonly asked questions and answers)

Are you applying for the 2021/2022 Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) Courses? You may be having problems or experiencing some difficulties during the application process. Here is a guide on how to resolve some of these problems.

Am I selecting courses regarding the cut off points for 2019?

Cut-off points are the weighted cluster points of the last competitively placed student in a given degree programme and can only be determined once the placement cycle is complete. The previous cut-off has been provided to guide in the application.

I applied for Courses while at school. Am I supposed to apply again?

If you selected courses through your school, you are encouraged to log in, review your choices and make changes to align them with your exam performance, priorities and interests.

Which is the official Kuccps portal for courses application/ revision?

Use the Kuccps official portal, students.kuccps.net/login/, that is now open for application/revision by the KCSE2020 candidates and will close on June 11, 2021.

Is the Kuccps going to upload the cut-off points for 2020 so that I can compare them with my cluster points and make appropriate choices based on my performance?

You have been provided with cut off points of previous 4 years to use as a gauge on how competitive a course is to enable you find where you fit.

I have started to apply but the portal indicates 1b, 1c is required. How can I go through it?

Please note that 1a,1b,1c should be a similar course in three different institutions while 2,3,4 is any other preferred course in an institution of your choice.

I want you to please give me a procedure on how you can help me change my university. I did my KCSE exams in 2019 but was placed in a university that was not my choice and selected for a course which I am not interested in. Please help.

Inter Institution Transfer is usually done online through the student portal but it is currently closed. The application procedure will be provided once the portal is open. Keep on checking here for update on inter-institution transfer date.

What are the Kuccps cut off points?

Cut off points are the marks of the last person to enter a course in a university. Kuccps can only get this information after applicants have been placed and joined.

I have been told that I haven’t secured a place because the courses I applied for are very competitive. What should I do?

Log into the student portal and revise your courses.

How does Kuccps determine a student’s cluster points?

Kuccps uses the performance index which is the ratio of your performance per subject against the highest performing student in that subject. Get more details here; How to calculate Kuccps cluster points.

I am a student of KCSE 2018. Am l eligible to apply now for KUCCPS placement or is it for 2020 candidate only?

If you got below C+ and have never been placed you can apply and be placed.

Why does the Kuccps system tell me that I do not qualify for the selected course?

If the system tells you that you do not qualify for the course you have selected, this means there’s a subject among the requirements that you have not met. Please choose another course.

Where is my cluster weight written on the portal I’m seeing many values. Also, what does Kuccps mean to say that I have not qualified for any course due to competition? How will I know how many cluster points are required for a certain course? Kindly help.

When you click on a course of choice, you will be directed to a page that has the subject requirements and a list of the institutions that offer that course with their cut off points over a period of 4 years. Your cluster weights are on the far right. Choose courses where your cluster weights exceed the cut off points by around 1.5 points and above to give yourself a competitive edge.

I can’t see the 2020 cut off points for the programmes. How do I know which ones Am qualified for?

Cut-off points are the weighted cluster points of the last competitively placed student in a given degree programme. Cut-off points can only be determined once the placement cycle is complete.

Where are the Kuccps cutoff points for 2020?

You have been provided with cut off points of previous 4 years to use as a gauge on how competitive a course is to enable you find where you fit. Cut off points are the marks of the last person to enter a course in a university. We can only get this information after applicants have been placed and joined.

How do I know the institution where I have been placed?

Placement will begin after the first revision exercise. Once the placement results are out a notification is usually sent to applicants via SMS and results posted in the Kuccps student portal.

When the required subjects are Physics or mathematics, English or Kiswahili, what subjects should I use to calculate my cluster points? Also, when calculating my cluster points Should I go with the formula given?

Please dont calculate your cluster weights. Use what we have provided on the portal. You do not have all the information required. Kuccps uses the performance index which is the ratio of your performance per subject against the highest performing student in that subject. Get more details here; How to calculate Kuccps cluster points.

Where do I apply or change my Kuccps courses?

KUCCPS Issues Urgent Call for Applications as Deadline Approaches

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has announced a seven-day application window for KCSE candidates intending to apply for degree or TVET courses. The deadline for submission of applications is April 30, 2025.

KUCCPS has encouraged students to submit their applications before time elapses. The portal will be inaccessible once the deadline has passed, leaving those who postpone without the opportunity to apply.

Candidates who participated in the 2024 KCSE examinations are eligible to apply for degree courses. However, students who took their examinations between 2000 and 2024 may apply for TVET programs, which include diplomas, certificates, and artisanal courses.

Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs) are also included in the application process. However, these opportunities are exclusively available for candidates who sat for their examinations between 2000 and 2024 and aspire to enroll in teaching courses at specific colleges.

KUCCPS has underscored that degree programs are limited to those who obtained a C+ grade or higher in their KCSE examinations. This is a vital detail for students aiming to apply for degree courses.

The placement service has articulated concerns regarding the insufficient number of applications. As of April 17, over 100,000 students who qualified for university admission had not yet submitted their applications.

John Oluoch, the KUCCPS Director for Placement and Career Development, urged students to take prompt action to prevent missing out. He remarked that more than half of eligible candidates had yet to submit their applications.

The notice acts as a reminder for students to apply without delay, particularly as the portal will be closing imminently. KUCCPS emphasized that students should not wait until the last moment to avoid technical difficulties when accessing the portal.

The agency’s call for timely applications follows observations by officials that many students postpone submitting their forms until the last minute, which could lead to unnecessary anxiety.

With the deadline rapidly approaching, KUCCPS is urging candidates to complete their applications as early as possible to secure their place in their desired programs. The application process will close at midnight on April 30, 2025.

KUCCPS 2020/2021 first years joining instructions, admission letters and lists

Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, has asked Universities and colleges to contact their respective 2020/2021 KUCCPS students and give them joining instructions and expedite start of their academic journey as most universities have continued with online learning during this era of COVID-19 restrictions. While noting that the current corona virus pandemic has affected learning in the country, the CS told universities to come up with innovations to ensure learning continues.

The 2020/2021 first year students are anxious as to when they will join university. Most have been making endless visits to cyber cafes to download their calling letters; despite the fact that universities are yet to communicate.

It is important to note that respective universities will communicate directly to the students. Admission lists and letters per university would also be available online; on universities’ respective portals and the kuccps student portal.

Inter-institution transfers
In the just concluded 2020/2021 academic year KUCCPS placement exercise, 122,831 candidates secured placement to degree courses in universities while 88,724 got placed in TVET institutions. Of those placed in TVET, 53,726 will be admitted to Diploma,29,112 to Craft Certificate and 5,886 Artisan Certificate courses.
Most students are expected to start their studies in September for their first year semester one.
A few students have, though, expressed dissatisfaction in the universities where they were placed. They now want the placement agency to open the inter-institution transfer portal so that they can apply for transfers.

Using the KUCCPS student portal: Ultimate guide

Are you a form four leaver who has just done the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examinations? Are you seeking to further your studies? Well, The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) offers form four leavers with an opportunity to further their studies in courses of their choice.

After sitting the KCSE examination, a student can be placed in a university, college or TVET institution depending on the student’s performance and preference.

THE KUCCPS STUDENT PORTAL.

To complete the placement process KUCCPS has a dedicated portal for students. The portal can be accessed by using the address; https://students.kuccps.net/

This portal enables a student to select preferred programmes, revise choices, see institution plus course you have successfully been placed to pursue, download your admission letter and request for inter-institution transfer. These programmes can be selected at school level or in subsequent revisions (first and second revisions). An inter-institution transfer request is placed by students who are not pleased with the universities/ colleges where KUCCPS has placed them.

To access the student’s portal you must be armed with your KCSE index number, KCSE year and password. Use Your Birth Certificate number or KCPE Index No (as used in KCSE Exam Registration) as your Initial Password. You can change this if you like but it is not very necessary to do so.

On successful log in, your account dashboard shows available programmes and institutions plus the menu bar. To make your degree/ diploma/ certificate course choice and even monitor your application, use the ‘Application/ Revision’ tab. It is on the dashboard where you will see your selection/ placement results once released.

Meet Doris Kemunto Mogire who scored a B+, of 69 points, in the KCSE 2019 examinations and who is unhappy with the course she has been placed to undertake. Doris, just like her peers, had big dreams and was hoping to pursue a degree in medicine in University. But, her dreams hang on balance after The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) enrolled her in a TVET institution to pursue a diploma in pharmaceutical technology.

The news of her placement in an inferior course caught her by a big surprise. She is distraught and had to cry for three days.

“She cried for three days. She was not eating in this house. When this matter appeared in the newspaper (Nation), I showed her and told her she was not the only candidate affected. That’s when she calmed down. She used to ask me why she even went to school,” explained her mother when interviewed by a local TV channel.

Doris Kemunto Mogire is one of the top 100 performers in 2019 KCSE exams who is set to join Kisii polytechnic for a diploma in pharmaceutical technology. Doris feels short changed. She is among the about 2,000 KCSE 2019 students who scored a C+ and above (which is the minimum entry grade to university) but opted for courses in TVETs.

According to the mother, the 2019 KCSE candidate kept saying she does not see anything good in life if she does not get admitted to her course of choice.

According to results shown to the media, the former student at Precious Blood Kagwe Girls High School, garnered a B- in English, B+ in Kiswahili, A- in Mathematics, B+ in Biology, B- in Physics, B+ in Chemistry, B in CRE and A- in Home Science.

“I believe a diploma won’t be enough to help me, my parents and my younger sisters in future. I’ve always been passionate about getting a degree. My father has always struggled to ensure I finish school,” Doris said.

“My dream and my passion is to become a doctor; that is what I wanted. I believe if I will be given a chance, If will be helped I can make it,” she added.

She wanted to pursue the course in Nursing at Kisii, Meru, Embu and Kirinyaga universities

According to Doris’s father, she had worked hard to pass Biology and was the only one who had gotten a B+ in the subject in the school.

WHAT NEXT FOR DORIS AND THOSE IN SAME DILEMMA?

According to figures presented by KUCCPS, 122,831 candidates secured placement to degree courses in universities while 88,724 got placed in TVET institutions. Of those placed in TVET, 53,726 will be admitted to Diploma; 29,112 to Craft Certificate and 5,886 to Artisan Certificate courses.

But, all is not lost for those unhappy with the placement results. KUCCPS provides them with a chance to apply for inter institution transfers. The only impediment may be unavailability of slots in the preferred institution. Nevertheless, one can proceed and make the application.
