MAWEGO  SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Mawego girls secondary school was started in 1966 through the efforts of the Catholic Church for the local girls to get secondary education. The church felt that while boys had many schools in which to join form one classes, the girls also needed a place to further their education. The local community also joined hands with the church and so the school was born. Mawego Girls is located in Rachuonyo North East Division in Rachuonyo North District. The school is a provincial Girls Boarding Secondary with a capacity for 3 streams and has a total of 360 students. It could be accessed from Sondu-kisii road.

Jubilee Nominated Senator Millicent Omanga posing at her home, today.

The unverified list of seventeen Legislators said to have tested positive for Covid-19 has been making rounds in the media.

The fake list showing Legislators who purportedly tested positive for the Corona virus Disease.

“I took a voluntary COVID-19 test on Fiiday last week. The result was directly conveyed to me in person by a doctor. Tested Negative. It is my civic duty to continue complying with guidelines. It’s not a matter of choice. At the same time parliament cannot abdicate. Chew gum and walk,” said Siaya Senator James Orengo. The Senator went on to post his Covid-19 test results (shown below).

“As a nation and a people we are in this together and must confront COVID-19 as an army. Fear of the virus should not be turned into stigma but into a resolve to fight the pandemic. Count me in the army,” he added.

Kuppet writes to TSC about move to deduct salaries of 3,500 teachers for failing to declare wealth

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers, Kuppet, as lashed out at the teachers’ employer for threatening to expunge over 3,500 teachers and staff from the payroll. This is in response to a move by the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to remove teachers who failed to declare their 2017/ 2019 liabilities, assets and income within the stipulated time.

“We have noted with concern that the Teachers Service Commission intends to stop the remittance of salaries to some 3,500 TSC employees, most of them teachers, for their alleged failure to file a statement of income, assets and liabilities under the Public Officers Ethics Act,” says Kuppet.

TSC on April 14, 2020, released a list of 3,500 teachers and staff who failed to declare their wealth even after extending the deadline from the earlier set date of 31/12/2019. The Commission said the affected individuals will miss their April salaries until they do a formal explanation as to why they failed to comply. Kuppet says this move has had ripple effects among the teaching circles.

“The Commission’s circular dated 14 April 2020 has caused extreme anxiety in the teaching fraternity at a time all Kenyans are dealing with the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic. Already, too many lists are circulating on social media allegedly identifying the affected teachers,” adds Kuppet via a circular dated April 21, 2020.

According to Kuppet, it will be very difficult for the said teachers to fulfill the requirements set by TSC considering the fact that ‘schools and TSC offices around the country are currently un-operational, while many teachers have travelled far away from their stations of service.’

Borrow a leaf from other employers

The current state of the Covid-19 pandemic in the country has made life very difficult and subjecting teachers to pay cuts will only make the situation worse. kuppet advises TSC to borrow a leaf from other government arms.

“It would be insensitive on the Commission’s part to be punishing teachers during this pandemic when other government departments are issuing temporary reprieves to citizens and foreigners for non-compliance with certain protocols during this crisis. For instance, the government has extended an indefinite extension for foreign nationals whose work permits have expired,” advises Kuppet.

Accordingly, KUPPET has written to the TSC Secretary urging her to rescind the planned action of suspending salaries for any employees until after the COVID-19 pandemic is over and government operations return to normal.

Total shutdown: President Uhuru oders immediate closure of all schools, Universities

President Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered that all learning institutions to be closed in order to curb the spread of the Corona Virus (Covid-19) pandemic. This is after two more cases tested positive for the disease.

Here is the full address by the President on Sunday evening;

“My Fellow Kenyans.,

On Friday March 13th, 2020 the Government of Kenya received confirmation of the first case of COVID-19, commonly known as Coronavirus.

As you may recall, when we first announced the confirmation of the first case, we stated that we had traced 27 persons who had come into contact with the first patient. We have since tested the 27 people at our National Influenza Center.

Today, we have received confirmation of two more cases of the Coronavirus. The two have tested positive as a result of coming into contact with the first patient.

Our health officials have already moved them into Kenyatta National Hospital isolation facility.

The medical teams are closely monitoring the patients, who are in stable condition and responding well to treatment. This gives us hope.

Fellow Kenyans,

My Government has been working to monitor the spread of the virus. We have set up necessary containment and treatment protocols across the country. However, following the result of the two additional cases, we are now directing the following additional protocols:

  1. The Government is suspending travel for all persons coming into Kenya from any country with reported Coronavirus cases.
  1. Only Kenyan Citizens, and any foreigners with valid residence permits will be allowed to come in provided they proceed on self quarantine or to a government designated quarantine facility. This will take effect within the next 48 hours to cater for any passengers who may be enroute. This directive will remain in effect for the next 30 days or as varied by the National Emergency Response Committee.
  1. All persons who have come into Kenya in the last 14 days must self-quarantine. If any person exhibits symptoms such as cough, or fever, they should present themselves to the nearest health facility for testing;
  1. We have suspended learning in all our education institutions with immediate effect. Consequently, and to facilitate a phased approach, primary and secondary day schools are to suspend operations from tomorrow.
  1. For those in boarding schools, the school administration is to ensure that students are home by Wednesday, 18th March 2020 while Universities and Tertiary Institutions are to close by Friday, 20th March 2020;
  1. Where possible, government offices, businesses and companies are encouraged to allow employees to work from home, with the exception of employees working in critical or essential services.
  1. In order to avoid the risk of transmission through physical handling of money, we encourage the use of cashless transactions such as mobile money and credit cards. We appeal to mobile operators and banks to take into consideration the situation, and reduce the cost of transactions during this period.
  1. In line with the directive to avoid crowded places, citizens are encouraged to:
  • Avoid congregating including in places of worship;
  • Minimize attendance to social gatherings including weddings and funerals, and restrict the same to immediate family members;
  • Avoid crowded places including shopping malls and entertainment premises;
  • Minimize congestion in public transport wherever possible;
  • Limitation of visitors to hospitalised patients in both public and private hospitals.
  1. Hospitals and shopping malls are encouraged to provide soap, water and hand sanitizers and ensure that all their premises are regularly cleaned and disinfected.

Globally, the impact of the virus is still unfolding. I want to assure you that My Administration is at the forefront of assessing, containing and managing this pandemic in the country.

Some of the measures may cause inconvenience, but I want to assure you they are designed to ensure that we effectively contain the spread of the virus.

I appeal to all of us to strictly observe these measures. I would also like to appeal for calm. Kenyans must avoid misinformation that causes panic and anxiety.

Let us remember that as Kenyans, we have been faced with other crisis in the past, and we have always triumphed by coming together in the spirit of national unity and cooperation.

Every single Kenyan has a responsibility in ensuring they play their part in safeguarding Kenyan lives.

This pandemic will test us, as it is testing all countries in every corner of the world, but I do not believe it will defeat us.  If we pull together, and everybody does their part, we shall overcome its worst impacts.

God bless you all, God bless Kenya.”

BANDE GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The idea of Bande Girls Secondary School was birthed in1975 by Missionary Samuel Ochola who was inspired by Ngiya Girls as she did his Missionary work there. The idea was adopted by the community to address the need of girl-child education in Nyatike Sub-county. Girl-child education was a major challenge in the area that was considered to be a semi-arid area, with a high population of uneducated girl-child facing early pregnancies and early marriages.

The School experienced a lot of instabilities in the early years of its establishment due to frequent changes of school heads. It failed to pick up well and collapsed in 1978, but the vision persistently lingered with the community. In 1984, it was revived and headed by Mr. Ben Sewe Akello up to 1988. In 1989, two teachers who were the first TSC teachers were posted in the school under the new headship of Mr. Okoth Lawrence.

In 1989, Mr. Okinyi Richard took over the headship until 1997. By 1990, Missionary Samuel Ochola of CPK blessed the school officially under the name St. Samuel Ochola Bande Girls Secondary School, but was later registered as Bande Girls Secondary school.   The first candidates in 1991 were 7 students who were hosted by Rabwao Mixed as an Exam Centre and performed exceptionally well. All these years the school was not fenced and had less security and poor infrastructure.

In 1997 Mrs. Oruwo took over the headship up to 2000, then Mrs. Mudis up to 2008. These frequent changes in headship further caused instabilities in the school. The school later stabilized in the year 2008 with Mrs. Hellen Otieno as the head. The school has gradually grown from single streamed to three streamed boarding girl-school and promoted from community (Harambee) school to the current status as an Extra-county school as it continued to excel in both Academics and co-curricular activities i.e. Music, Athletics and Netball where the school has been reaching Regional for a long period now.

The academic performance of the school has gradually increased with the best achievement being at a mean of 5.8 in 2013 with 20 students attaining university grades. In 2016 we produced the best student in Migori county who attained grade A-(minus) and is currently pursuing Medicine at JKUAT. Eighteen (18) other students have pursued various career degree courses in various universities. Over the years we have formed a strong base of successful alumni, who have made the school proud in various spectra of life.

In the past, majority of the students admitted into the school were from Migori County, and more specifically from Nyatike and with relatively average entry mark. However, with its elevation to extra-county status it now admits students from all counties across the county.

The greatest achievement came when the school has realized is when it produced the leading girl in Migori County in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education( K.C.S.E) 2016 and won the Migori county Equity Bank Award for the best girl.
