Revealing the Most Popular Courses at KMTC {Exclusive}

In the bustling halls of Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), a vibrant academic scene unfolds. According to the 2025 Kenya Economic Survey, Orthopaedic Plaster Technology tops the list for certificate-level courses, while Nursing has once again claimed the spotlight as the most enrolled program for the fifth year running. The report reveals that out of 29,326 aspiring medical professionals who enrolled last year, diploma nursing students comprised the largest cohort.

For the 2023/24 academic year, a remarkable 4,825 students are pursuing diplomas in Community Health Nursing. Following closely is Clinical Medicine & Surgery with 2,567 enrollees, while Health Records and Information Technology welcomes 2,016 students. Community Health and Orthopaedic and Trauma Medicine courses also attract significant numbers, with 1,832 and 1,615 students, respectively.

At the certificate level, Orthopaedic Plaster Technology leads with 1,696 students, trailed by Community Health Assistant (1,645), Health Records & Information Technology (1,623), Emergency Medical Technician (1,539), and Community Nursing (1,409).

The Economic Survey highlights a notable growth in middle-level medical trainees, rising from 26,830 in the 2020/21 academic year to 29,326 in 2023/24. This data was unveiled in Nairobi on May 6 by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).

Conversely, higher diploma courses represent a smaller fraction of the student body, with only 702 trainees across various specializations, including pharmacy, nursing, medical engineering, and clinical medicine and surgery.

It’s important to note that high enrolment figures don’t necessarily equate to popularity. These numbers often reflect the availability of training slots or the demands of the national workforce. To truly gauge student preference, one would need insight into which courses attract the most applications and where competition for limited spots is most intense.

The survey also reveals that Kenya boasts a total of 64,449 registered nurses, with 7,874 holding Bachelor of Science degrees, 49,871 possessing diplomas, and 6,704 with certificates. Clinical officers number 30,800, comprised of 28,712 diploma holders and 2,154 degree holders.

KMTC stands out as the premier institution for mid-level medical training in Kenya. In 2024, a staggering 56,516 individuals applied for various diploma courses, yet only around 19,000 were granted admission, leaving 36,863 hopefuls—65 percent of applicants—without a spot. Former Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu noted during a stakeholder forum that the demand for KMTC programs far exceeds the available slots.

Despite these strong enrolment trends, the number of graduates saw a decline in the most recent academic year. The Economic Survey reports a 6.8 percent drop in middle-level medical graduates, totaling 21,147 for the 2023/24 academic year. In December 2024, KMTC celebrated the graduation of 21,147 students, with female graduates outnumbering males at 67.2 percent of the total.

Diploma holders made up the majority of graduates at 53.7 percent, while certificate holders accounted for 43.9 percent, and those with higher diplomas represented a mere 2.4 percent. The previous year, December 2023, marked a historic milestone for KMTC, with 22,695 students graduating—the highest in the college’s 96-year legacy.

During the graduation ceremony at Moi International Sports Stadium in Kasarani, college CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch expressed pride in the graduates, stating, “These individuals, having undergone extensive training, are exceptionally prepared to drive advancements in line with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda.”

KMTC Kabarnet to open its first satellite Campus in Tiaty

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kabarnet has announced plans to open a satellite Campus in Tiaty Constituency in Baringo County.

Speaking during a groundbreaking ceremony for Kshs 12.8 million hostel block, Friday (July 2, 2021), KMTC CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo confirmed that Chemolingot Satellite Campus will be opened in September this year.

“We will start with the first course in Community Health where we will admit the first group of 200 students,” he said.

“As expansion work goes on, we will progressively build programmes to include Nursing, Clinical; Medicine, and Pharmacy,” he added.

The College is eyeing the establishment of the Satellite Campus as one possible tool to promote national cohesion.

“We are committed to promoting unity among communities. Besides enrolling local communities, this Satellite Campus will also attract students from across the country and thus promote cultural diversity in this region,” said Prof. Kiptoo.

“By producing more health workers for the region, we will greatly strengthen health systems and add to the fight against diseases like malaria,” he added.

Tiaty MP. Hon. William Kamket welcomed the announcement, terming it a good gesture that will set the pace for transforming the region.

Tiaty National-Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) has allocated more than Kshs 10 million towards the construction of classrooms, Skills Laboratories, ICT rooms, among other development projects.

KMTC Kabarnet was established in 1991 and currently has a population of more than 900 students.

KMTC ranked best College 2022

The Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, has maintained top position in the latest 2022 Webometrics rankings.

KMTC has emerged as the second-best College in Kenya for the second time in a row in the 2022 Webometrics rankings.

The College is ranked behind Kenya School of Government at position one and is closely followed by Amani College at position three and East African Institute of Certified Studies at position four.
The College is also ranked at position 36 out of 125 best Colleges/Universities in Kenya, beating notable giants such as Great Lakes University of Kisumu; Rongo University; Laikipia University, University of Kabianga; African Nazarene University; KCA University among others.

“The College has been recognized for its excellent skills-oriented training proving once again the important niche we have carved for ourselves as the lead trainer in Medical courses,” Ag. CEO Dr. Kelly Oluoch said.

He noted that the College’s continuous enhancement of its quality of training has ensured that KMTC alumni remain competitive in the job market.
Dr. Oluoch confirmed that the College is committed to leveraging technology to enhance teaching and learning.

What are the requirements for KMTC nursing?

Entry Requirements

To join KMTC to pursue a Certificate course, you must have a minimum of C- with specific qualifications in cluster subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE). For Diploma programmes, you must have attained a minimum of C with specific qualifications in cluster subjects. Upgrading courses require that a candidate has a certificate in a respective field while for Higher Diploma programmes, candidates must have attained a Diploma course as per the following guidelines.

The following table is a summary of the requirements for courses offered:

KMTC diploma in Nursing requirements (Entry).

KSCE mean grade of C plain and above.
C plain in either English or Kiswahili.
C plain in either biology or biological sciences.
C minus in chemistry, mathematics, or physics’/physical sciences.

Diploma nursing courses runs for three years. For upgrading students, the programs take 1.5 years on full time bases or 2 years if a student opts for distance learning.

KMTC certificate in Nursing requirements.

KCSE mean grade of C minus.
C minus in languages (English or Kiswahili).
C minus in biology or biological sciences.
D plus in either chemistry, mathematics or physics/physical sciences.

KMTC certificate in nursing course takes 2 years to complete. At the end, graduates are awarded with certificate in enrolled community health nursing. From here certificate holders can upgrade to diploma after registering with The Nursing Council of Kenya.

The Kenya Medical Training College invites applications from qualified candidates for admission into Medical Courses for the academic year 2021/2022 – SEPTEMBER 2021 PRE-SERVICE & IN SERVICE INTAKES and 2021/2022–MARCH 2022 PRE-SERVICE & IN-SERVICE INTAKE in our campuses situated in different parts of the country.

ABOUT KMTC

Situated about three kilometers on the northern side of Nairobi city, Kenya, KMTC headquarters and the main campus, Nairobi, stand on a 20-acre piece of land, opposite Kenyatta National Hospital, along Old Mbagathi Road. With over 34,000 students attending more than 70 medical courses, KMTC makes the biggest single contribution to the health sector in Kenya and is currently producing more than 8000 graduates every year for both the Kenyan public and private health sectors, accounting for more than 80 percent of the hospitals’ workforce. The institution boasts of a highly qualified and experienced teaching and administrative staff. It has a strength of over 1,900 members of staff. The national distribution of the College is its biggest uniqueness. Entry Requirements:

To join KMTC to pursue a certificate course, you must have a minimum of C- with specific qualifications in cluster subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations. For diploma programmes, you must have attained a minimum of C with specific qualifications in cluster subjects. Upgrading courses require that a candidate has a certificate in a respective field while for higher diploma programmes, candidates must have attained a diploma course as per the following guidelines. KMTC announces reopening dates for students

The Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, has announced a a phased physical reopening. Continuing students will report as from October 13, 2020. KMTC, just like other learning institutions in the country, closed in March this year following the outbreak of the killer corona virus disease in the country.

Through a memo dated Monday October 12, 2020, KMTC says all necessary measures have been put in place to combat spread of covid19, once students report back.

“The College has put in place the necessary measures to adhere to Government protocols to mitigate against the spread of COVID-19. In addition, the college has undertaken sensitization on COVID-19 infection prevention and control, psycho-social support and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs).” Reads the memo in part.

The College notes that online learning and applications are still ongoing.

Among other requirements, the students are expected to clear all outstanding college fees, sign mandatory health safety rules and to report with adequate masks and sanitizers. They will also have to adhere to the Ministry of Health and College guidelines on COVID-19.

KMTC students biggest beneficiaries of the Afya Elimu Fund (AEF)

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) is the biggest beneficiary of the Afya Elimu Fund (AEF), receiving 80 percent of the annual allocation, which has benefitted over 28,000 students, KMTC CEO Prof. Michael Kiptoo has said.

The CEO was speaking on May 19th, 2021 during a breakfast meeting organized by IntraHealth at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi.

The meeting themed ‘Celebration of AEF success stories and a call to action for new partners towards sustainable, resilient, and inclusive AEF’ sought to take stock of the successes achieved by the fund as it transitions fully to the Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB).

As of December 31st, 2020, AEF had supported 35,895 students to a tune of USD 25.8 million, with HELB contributing 79.5 percent and USAID contributing 18.32 percent.

Out of the total AEF beneficiaries, 11,878 students have graduated, and 3,983 are employed and available to support the provision of health services, including HIV prevention, care, treatment, and reproductive, maternal, neonatal child, as well as adolescent health.

Prof. Kiptoo later joined a panel discussion on resource mobilization and sustainability of AEF following the winding up of USAID’s funding and reduction of the Government capitation fund.

He gave an assurance noting that, “KMTC will continue to redouble its efforts in resource mobilization to meet the growing demand of College fees.”

The event was presided over by the Ministry of Health’s Directorate of Health Services Dr. Kigen Bartilol who commended the fund as being key in ensuring all Kenyans get access to quality healthcare.

“I implore all partners to come on board and support the fund,” he said.

Deputy Mission Director, USAID Kenya and East Africa, Ms. Heather Schildge lauded the fund, noting, “The beneficiaries will contribute to the national growth through saving and improving quality of life for Kenyans, improving their own lives, and those of their families.”

The benefits are multi-fold, and this is what USAID is all about.

Also present were HELB CEO Mr. Charles Ringera, Johnson & Johnson, Director Global Community Impact for Sub-Saharan Africa, Mr. Anthony Gitau, Intrahealth International, Country Director Dr. Janet Muriuki, and CEO KCB Foundation Ms. Caroline Kihara.

The Afya Elimu Fund was introduced in 2013 in a bid to support students in medical training institutions obtain loans that will support them in completing their respective training in various health courses.

Mr. Boniface Momanyi, a KMTC alumna and beneficiary of the fund, thanked the College for availing the resources, noting it is through the fund that he was able to complete his training.

“AEF took a huge burden off my shoulders, alleviated my fee-related stress, enabling me to concentrate on my studies,” he said. Currently working as a Nurse in Kirinyaga County, Mr. Momanyi graduated in 2018 with a Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) for September 2025 Intake. The application is open to all KCSE holders who meet minimum requirements for admission to KMTC programmes. Interested persons should log in to the KUCCPS Student’s Portal and apply. The application system will remain open from June 23, 2025 to July 7, 2025.

Funding
