Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Homa Bay Campus was established in 1979 to train Enrolled Community Health Nurses (ECN). In 1998, ECN was upgraded to Diploma in Community Health Nursing at the Campus.

This led to the phasing out of the pre-service training for enrolled nurses in 2002 and the introduction of other programs at diploma level.

From a class of 12 students in one certificate programme, today, the institution has more than 870 students in four different departments: Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nutrition.

Clinical experience sites

Clinical experience sites for our students include: Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, and other approved health facilities within and outside the county. Mission hospitals such as Kendu Bay and St. Mary’s Hospital in Mumias also provide the requisite learning facilities.

In an effort to make an all-round health professional, KMTC HomaBay Campus will nurture your interest in service to God and humanity through various religious organizations and societies. It organizes yearly inter-denominational prayer day to bring students together.

Students sporting activities include athletics and field events, ball games such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, and netball. Indoor games like darts, chess, scrabble among others are also available.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) club, engages with NACADA to help our students in the fight against drug and substance abuse.

Kenya Medical Training College – Bondo Campus is located in Bondo town within Bondo Sub-County in Siaya County along Bondo – Siaya Road.

Bondo Campus was started in March 2012 as an initiative of the KMTC Board of Directors and supported by the community led by the then Bondo Member of Parliament Hon. Gideon Ochanda and funded by National Government –Constituency Development Fund.

The Campus started at the former Masita Technical Training Center offering Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology. Due to demand for clinical courses, the Sub-County Health Committee allocated another site near Bondo Sub-County Hospital where the main campus was established.

The following programmes were started at the main campus: Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing in September 2012, Diploma in Clinical Medicine in September 2015 and an upgrading programme in Health Records in September 2015.

With more than 600 students in the Campus, plans are underway to start a new programme – Certificate in Medical Engineering in September 2019 which will further increase the student population.

Clinical experience sites

Bondo Sub-County Hospital offers the main clinical experience for our students. Other clinical sites include Yala, Kombewa, Ruambwa Usigu, Madiany, Got Agulu, Ambira and Ukwala Sub County Hospitals. For specialized placement, students use County Teaching and Referral Hospitals of Siaya, Vihiga, Kakamega, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga (Kisumu County), Bungoma and Busia.

Clubs, societies and sports at KMTC Bondo Campus

To ensure students receive all rounded training, the Campus involves them in extra-curricular activities as approved by the College. Societies include Seventh Day Adventist, Christian Union, Catholic Action, Muslim group and music club.

The Campus sports teams participate at all levels of the College’s sports competitions up to national level for ball games and athletics. The Campus has a well-trained first aid team.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kabarnet Campus is situated in Baringo County within Baringo County Referral Hospital, approximately 1.5 kilometers from Baringo County Headquarters.

The history of Kabarnet Campus dates back to 1991 when it was established as a Medical Training Center at the then Baringo District Development Institute (BDDI), now Baringo Kenya School of Government (K.S.G).

During the same period, the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Health had proposed to build Kabarnet Medical Training Center, now KMTC Kabarnet Campus, on an eight-acre plot set aside adjacent to Kabarnet District Hospital (now Baringo County Referral and Teaching Hospital). The project commenced in 1991 with the then Rift Valley Provincial Commissioner Mr. Yusuf Haji laying the foundation stone on 22^nd May 1991.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Garissa Campus was started in 1980 and it is situated within Garissa town, in Garissa County. The Campus trains students from all over the country and beyond, and is instrumental in providing quality health care workers.

KMTC Garissa’s Upper Campus, which is next to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, hosts tuition and administration blocks.   The Lower Campus, situated in the center of Garissa town near the GK prison, is mainly the students’ hostel.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Busia Campus is one of the 67 constituent campuses of KMTC. KMTC Busia campus is on a 4½ acre land, next to Busia County Referral Hospital in Busia town, Matayos Constituency Busia County, 500 meters from Kenya – Uganda boarder post.

Establishment of the Campus was envisioned by the then Vice President Moody Awori in 2003 and supported by the KMTC Board of Directors. The site for KMTC was officially commissioned by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki in 2005.

The foundation stone for construction of KMTC Busia was laid by Busia County Governor Sospeter Ojamong on 9^th October, 2014. A steering committee was established in 2015 to oversee implementation of the project activities in a phased approach. The first phase of the construction was completed by July 2016.

KMTC Busia Campus was approved by the Clinical Officers Council on 1^st November 2016 and the first group of students for a Diploma Course in Clinical Medicine were admitted by 15^th November 2016.

Further, the Nursing Council of Kenya accredited the Campus to offer a Diploma Course in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing in March 2017 and the first group of nursing students admitted in April 2017.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chwele Campus is situated in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County, off Bungoma/ Kimilili junction South of Sichei Mixed Boys and Girls Secondary School.

It is situated on a 29½ acre land which was procured by the Constituency Development Fund by the then area Member of Parliament Hon. Moses Wetangula and constructed with the support of the Iranian Government at a cost of Kshs. 90 million.

KMTC Chwele Campus officially opened its doors for admission of its pioneer class offering Certificate in Health Records and Information on 23^rd September, 2014 with 101 students.

In September 2017, the Campus started an Up-grading Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology. This is a two-year program which allows students who have done the certificate course to upgrade to a diploma.  Admissions take place twice a year, in March and September to meet competitive demand of health workers within the country and internationally. Currently there are 250 students.

At KMTC Chwele Campus the doors are open to stakeholders, the community and students to come partner, visit and learn. Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Eldoret Campus is located in Eldoret town within Uasin-Gishu County, next to Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital. It was established in 1977 as a School of Nursing, training Kenya Enrolled Community Health Nursing (KECHN).

In 1987, Hospital Maintenance School was established with the aid of Austria and German Governments and Ministry of Health, Kenya. The population per intake was 12 students per class.

In 1991, the School of Nursing was upgraded to train Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN), with an intake of 30 students per class and training of certificate course was stopped. In 1996, Nursing and Hospital Maintenance Schools were merged to form the current KMTC Eldoret Campus.

In September 2003, Certificate in Medical Engineering was upgraded to Diploma with an increased number of intakes from 12 to 25 students per class. In the same year, Diploma in Clinical Medicine was started with an intake of 50 students per class. Higher Diploma in Anaesthesia was started in 2006 while in-service Medical Engineering was started in March 2014.

KMTC Eldoret’s proximity to Moi Teaching & Referral Hospital ensures that our students get the much-needed skills using the modern equipment available in the hospital. Other areas used for clinical experience include:

KMTC Eldoret is home of athletics, and is one of the leading Campuses in athletics. When you join the Campus, you will enjoy a variety of sports offered such as netball, football, rugby, hockey, basketball, darts and indoor games.

We also have clubs which advocate for behavior change among students in and outside the Campus like students’ team of counsellors and educators, charitable groups, videography and environment group. The students are also allowed to form clubs that are beneficial to the Campus.

The Campus encourages and supports religious groups to nourish spiritual needs of students.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Embu Campus is situated one kilometer from Embu town, along Embu-Meru highway behind Embu Level Five Hospital, in Embu County.

Started in 1975 by missionaries as a Health Training College, it remained under Sister Barry’s administration as the Principal until 1987 when Kenya Medical Training College took over management of the Campus, offering Enrolled Community Nursing Certificate course. The KMTC Embu Campus was officially opened by Hon. Kenneth Matiba in 1987.

Facilities

The Campus has high-class facilities, many of which are new or have been recently renovated to cater for students’ training needs. It also has a well-equipped library networked with unlimited access to internet for both students and staff.

There is also a well-equipped computer lab where students receive world-class training from faculty members with knowledge and dedication to make your dreams come true.

There are fully equipped skills labs, with life-like models to provide you with opportunities to freely master nursing and medical skills before visiting clinical areas to deal with real patients.

Classes, conference rooms, staff offices, library and dining hall are all available to ensure students’ conducive learning atmosphere and welfare.

Staff quarters are situated near the Campus so that faculty and staff can conveniently take care of students’ learning needs. In addition, a house keeper resides within the Campus premises to cater for students’ needs.

The Campus has students’ accommodation facilities to make their access to learning areas more convenient.

Currently, with over 750 students, Embu Campus has continued to produce competent health workers who are serving in the County and beyond in various capacities.

Clinical Experience Sites

Our close proximity to Embu County Teaching and Referral Hospital ensures that our students get the much-needed exposure to competent staff, top-of-the-range equipment and other facilities.

For clinical experience, our students are attached to Kiritiri, Kianjokoma and Kibugu health centers, and other local health facilities which familiarize them with real-life experience in the communities where they will eventually work upon graduation. Our team of dedicated and experienced lecturers make weekly visits to follow up on the performance of students.

Clubs, Societies and Sports

You will become a member of active clubs and a vibrant student representative council at the Campus, which represents students’ grievances to the administration. Among the clubs are Changerz, which advocates for behavior change among students in and outside the Campus.

We also have vibrant religious groups to nourish your spiritual needs. Student Facilitating Club (STUFFAC) for nursing and clinical medicine students guides you throughout your student life, ensuring you master important medical skills in the lab before you go to the clinical areas to deal with real patients.

If you have an interest in sports, Embu is the place to be. Be it in volleyball, football, basketball, rugby, netball, darts, table tennis, chess, scrabble or badminton, Embu Campus will make your interest in the games fulfilling.

Background information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chuka Campus was started in September 2015 through collaboration between KMTC Board of Directors, the local community, Chuka University and the County Government of Tharaka Nithi. It is currently situated within Chuka University.

Programmes and Courses offered: –

• Diploma in Clinical Medicine.
• Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN).
• Certificate in Orthopaedic Technology

The following courses are set to start:

• Upgrading of Enrolled Community Nursing to KRCHN.
• Upgrading of certificate to Diploma in Orthopaedic Trauma Medicine.
• Short courses in HIV Testing Services, Mentorship, Monitoring and Evaluation.
