Buruburu Girls High school was started in 1986 as a mixed Day school with two streams. One Government and One Harambee. The first structure, a block of four classrooms and an administrative block were prefabs put up with funds given by the Ministry of Education in 19S6. It is from these humble beginnings that the school has grown to the present modem permanent buildings. The school presently has a population of 672 students, 39 teachers 30 subordinate staff. Currently, it is a Four (4) streamed school in the year 2009,
In 1987, the construction of Science laboratories was started with the financial assistance of CIDA and was in use by July 1988.
In 1989 the first block of permanent classrooms and an administration block were completed. Between 1993 and 1995 the school had managed to put up twelve (12) permanent classrooms. A series of Harambees through parents’ initiative necessitated these achievements.
In 1988 the school started phasing out boys and by 1992 the school was wholly a girl’s school. At this time the parents felt the need to turn the school into a boarding school so as to improve the academic performance.
By June 1994 all the girls became boarders and this was realized by renovating the former prefab classrooms into dormitories. In 1995 the parents embarked on putting up a modem hostel, which was completed in 1997. The hostel accommodates 392 students. Again, this was realized through Harambee, parent’s contribution and a donation of a 5-acre plot in plains view by His Excellency, The former President Daniel Ara0 Moi which was sold and the proceeds used to develop the school infrastructure.
Due to high demand for the school as a result of the good progressive academic performance, there was high over enrolment due to pressure in Nairobi for Boarding Schools and therefore the need to expand the school was inevitable.
In the year 2000, the school was re-registered as a 3 streamed school. Consequently, the addition of four classrooms block, ablution block, two small staffrooms and a new hostel to accommodate the new stream was constructed and completed by the year 2002. The hostel accommodates the addition of 172 students. These were done once again through Harambee, and parents’ contribution.
The school managed to acquire’ a school minibus of 32 seaters in 1995. This was achieved through the efforts of the girls who organized a walk to raise the funds and donations from well-wishers.
This bus made life easier in the school for it took the students for educational trips, Co-curricu!ar activities, and dropped teachers who worked late. This went on up to recently when the growth in the population of students increased and hence leading to the demand for a bigger bus. The school acquired a 62 setter bus in the year 2005. This was again realized through the initiation of the girls and the teachers who owned the project and who organized various activities including a program for annual walks, and open basketball tournaments to raise funds and also donations from well-wishers. The payment of the bus is on 4 years loan of Kshs.7 Million which is being paid on a termly basis. The school intends to hold a walk on May 2009 and hopes to collect enough funds to pay up to the last installment, have the bus repainted and build a shed for the bus to protect it from too much sunshine.
The school has a small dispensary which is fully equipped and is manned by a
qualified nurse on a full-time basis. The nurse is seconded to the school by the Ministry of Health.
The school has a temporary library housed in the prefab buildings which is fairly
equipped and it is manned by a qualified librarian on a full-time basis.

NYAMIRA GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL’S KCSE PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS
The school has maintained a good run in performance at the Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, exams. In the 2018 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, exams the school registered a total of 233 candidates who managed to score a mean of a B+(plus) with a performance index of 67.724. In 2019, the school had a total candidature of 434 students.
The Ministry of Education has said a total of 2,148 schools were closed countrywide for failing to meet basic registration requirements. This follows an audit that was conducted in term 3 of 2019. The audit came in light of the Precious talent school traged where a classroom collapsed on the morning of Monday September 23, 2019; the accident at the school claimed the lives of eight learners.
Through a circular dated September 26, 2019 the Ministry had directed for immediate closure of all schools that do not meet the Set Safety regulations thus exposing learners to dangers.
“Following the infrastructure report received in this office (Education Headquarters), it was noted that 2148 schools were not registered and therefore were closed, while 2060 were marked for reassessment,” reads a circular from the Ministry; dated December 9, 2019.
According to an earlier circular by Education Principal Secretary Dr Belio Kipsang; ‘It has been observed that some basic education institutions have been established without following due process. A number of institutions exist without registration certificates while others have failed to reapply for re-registration when their circumstances change… Most of those institutions do not meet the minimum standards required of them to be registered and some of them have infrastructure that are below standard and which pose danger to the learners.’
In the just released audit report, the Rift Valley leads with the highest number of unregistered schools (at 583) and is followed closely by Nairobi Region which has 578 schools. Consequently, 488 schools were closed in the Rift Valley Region, while 356 of such schools were closed in Nairobi.
“You are required to ensure that all schools closed remain closed until they comply. They should be taken through the process of registration once they comply,” the Ministry orders Regional and County Directors of Education.
A total of 476 schools in the Rift Valley have been earmarked for reassessment. Nairobi, Eastern and Nyanza have 420, 415 and 356 schools; respectively. The Ministry orders that the schools reassessed for compliance as soon as schools reopen on January 6, 2020.
“You (Regional and County Directors of Education) should liaise with the Ministry of Interior at all levels to enforce compliance. Reports on action taken should reach the office of the Principal Secretary by 10th February, 2020,” adds the Ministry.

It is going to be a beehive of activities in the education sector this week. With the marking of the 2019 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams having been completed last week, results are expected any time this week. Last year’s results were released on Friday 21st December 2018.
The Kenya National Examinations Council, KNEC, is expected to handover the results to the Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha who will in turn brief the President before releasing them to the public. The over 699,745 candidates who sat for this year’s exam will be hoping to receive their results before Christmas (which is next week); as promised by Prof Magoha.
As was the case last year, during the KCSE results’ releasing ceremony, the CS is expected to give the names of the most improved students and list of top candidates in the 2019 exams. The CS will also give a breakdown of the candidates per grade.
Other details that may be given by the CS include: An analysis of the candidates who sat the exams (in terms of gender and age among others) and performance in the subjects.
Apart from the 2019 KCSE results, school administrators who have stayed longer in their current stations and those working in their home counties are expecting to be moved to new stations. The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, is in the process of effecting the transfers; otherwise referred to as ‘delocalization’.
The Commission kicked off the delocalization exercise in January, 2018. Other massive deployments would then follow in April, August and December of the same year. Though in April, 2019 the Commission slowed down the transfers as only a handful administrators were moved. In December, 2018, a total of 3,094 teachers were moved.
Sources familiar with the transfers indicate that the Commission now prefers moving the administrators in December as opposed to April and August to minimize disruptions and for smooth transition. The Kenya National Union of Teachers, KNUT, and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have been opposed to the massive delocalization exercise; saying it should be executed with a human face.
TSC has already concluded interviews for 7,000 for schools heads and deputies’ positions; with those lacking Masters Degree being locked out.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended Sub-County schools in the country for posting a remarkable improvement in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.
The President said the improvement is as a result of the enhanced Government investment in the education sector and backs efforts to ensure 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school education.
President Kenyatta spoke at State House on Wednesday December 18, 2019, Nairobi after being briefed on this year’s KCSE results by Education CS Prof George Magoha ahead of their release to the public.
The President commended teachers across the country especially in sub-county schools for devoting their time to give students the best they deserve, catapulting them to be top students in the country.
“My government will continue to ensure our children get quality education regardless of their location.
“Today we have seen that students who scored less than 200 marks at KCPE have posted excellent results. It is all about giving a chance to our children and availing the necessary resources” the President noted.
He similarly encouraged teachers and parents to support their children and give them hope especially those who join Sub-County day schools saying the institutions are the backbone of the 100 percent transition programme since they absorb over 70 percent of the learners.
In his briefing to the President, Prof Magoha said 127 special needs learners have excelled in this year’s KCSE and are expected to join the universities.
In this year’s KCSE results, a majority of the students who scored 200 marks and below in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) attained a mean score of C+ and above.
Present during the briefing were Education PS Dr Belio Kipsang, Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, Acting KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr Mercy Karogo and KNEC Chairman Dr John Onsati among others.
