Moi Girls High School, Eldoret; KCSE Performance, Location, History, Fees, Contacts, Portal Login, Postal Address, KNEC Code, Photos and Admissions

A top class of its kind, Moi Girls’ High School is one of the most sought after institution for admissions. Located just outside the CBD of Eldoret, Kenya, Moi Girls’ High School – Eldoret (The Highlands School, until 1978) is a top national girls’ boarding school established in 1928. It is  managed by the school’s Board of Management appointed by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kenya. It is a Christian non-denominational school.

MOI GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL BRIEF HISTORY

Moi Girls’ High School – Eldoret has a long history dating back to 1928. It was first established the as a European Primary School to cater for the children of the British and Boer settlers in the then White Highlands of Kenya. The primary school was later renamed Highlands Primary School.

In the 1930’s, the school was moved across the Sosiani river to what is now Hill School. The need for a girls’ high school for the white settlers in Eastern Africa saw the founding of the present school. It was opened in 1954 with the name New Girls’ High School, as an extension of The European Girls School (The Kenya High School). The school was later renamed The Highlands School.

Most of the school buildings were put up between 1952 and 1957. However, the oldest structures are the ones currently accommodating the Music and French departments and were constructed in the early 1930’s.
The Highlands School triumphed both in academic and sports since the 1950’s and 1960’s.

After Kenya’s attainment of independence and self rule in 1963 and 1964 respectively, the school experienced a decline in number of students because the settlers began relocating to other countries. So In 1965, the first African students were admitted to the school through the government policy of integration. New members of the Board of Governors that were appointed included the first Africans who in turn elected Hon. D. T. Arap Moi as the school board chairman. The school had him as the chairman of the board since then till 2007 when he formally retired.

In 1978, the school had its name changed from ‘The Highlands School’ to ‘Moi Girls’ High School – Eldoret’. This was done in honour of the long serving board chairman who had then risen to become the president of the Republic of Kenya that same year.

Teacher Professional Development, TPD, training: All you need to know

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, is set to roll out in service training programmes for all practicing teachers. The Commission has already contracted institutions that will be offering the refresher training programme christened Teacher Professional Development (TPD) modules. The teachers will be expected to meet the training costs for the modules that will be offered during school holidays. Of importance to note is the fact that the training will be mandatory for all practicing teachers. A teacher who will fail to undertake the short courses would be deemed to have violated the TSC code of regulation and may face disciplinary action from the employer.

Kenyatta University, Mount Kenya University, Riara University and Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) have been identified to offer the Teacher Professional Development modules. A teacher will be at liberty to choose an institution of his/ her choice where to take the TPD modules. According to TSC, the starting date will be announced once all logistics are addressed. Teacher Professional Development will continuously update teacher knowledge, skills, attitude and values encourage teachers’ learning communities.

The good news for teachers is that most of the TPD modules will be available online. “Many components of the TSC Teacher Professional Development programme will be available to teachers online and will be accessed through mobile phones,” says the Commission.

DETAILS ON THE TPD MODULES

All teachers will now be required to undergo professional development training six times in their career with each module taking a period of five (5) years. This means training will be done after every five years for a maximum of thirty years. The number of modules to be undertaken will, though, depend on the number of years that a teacher still has in service. Consequently, the type of module to be taken will largely depend on the number of years that a teacher still has in service; before attaining retirement age.

A teacher beginning the training will be required to complete seven sections of module one in order to be re-certified.

According to a policy statement paper prepared by TSC in 2018, Teachers will be trained for about five (5) days during school holidays. Upon commencement of the programme, a teacher will be required to acquire a certificate, which is renewable every five years while subsequent applicants for certificate of registration will be issued with both certificates.

After completing all Teacher Professional Development modules, teachers will be eligible for re-certification and promotion; as the TPD modules have been anchored in the Career Progression Guidelines, CPG. The training will also enhance the teacher’s knowledge and skills in order to address gaps in the Teacher Performance and Appraisal Development, TPAD. They will also keep teachers informed, enable them improve their pedagogical skills and acquire new, relevant, knowledge in their teaching areas.

On the flip side, teachers who would fail after the TPD assessment will have their teaching certificates withdrawn.

ST JOSEPH GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

St. Joseph’s Girls was established in 1993 when the girls were curved off from the previously mixed school, known as St. Joseph’s High School. The main aim of the separation was to improve the academic performance of the girls, as well as their enrolment. The girls’ school was then allocated 45 acres on which it stands today.

The first headteacher was Mrs. Florence Oginda (1993—1999). The current Principal, Ms. Mary Ooko took the mantle in 2008 from M/s Eunice Njenga who served between 1999 and 2008.

At inception, the school faced several challenges including; under-enrollment, low academic standards, inadequate instructional material and inadequate physical facilities such as dormitories, laboratories, classrooms, library amongst many others. However, with the passage of time, the school has witnessed increased enrolment from two streams and now embarking into the fourth stream.
