List of schools yet to upload 2020 form one selection list on Nemis per county- Nairobi

About 5,397 schools are yet to upload their 2020 from one selection lists onto the National Education Management Information System, Nemis. This is according to the latest data from the Education Ministry. This mostly affects the Sub County and Private schools whose selection was done manually. The list detailing the school’s name and location indicates that the schools are yet to upload their selection lists onto their Nemis accounts in readiness for the admission exercise in January 2020.

The Education Ministry has set reporting date for the 2020 form ones to secondary schools to be between January Monday 13th to Friday 17th. This will be about one week after the other students would have reported back to school for the new year.

SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

In 1900, Rev. A.W. McGregor was sent by the Chuch Missionary Society (CMS)as a pioneer missionary to Kikuyu-Land, Rev Mc.Gregor was already involved in missionary work among the Taita in Taveta in early 1892.Thus Rev. Mc Gregor arrived in Fort Smith in Kikuyu on October 13 1990.He started looking for suitable land for missionary work. He had been offered land at site of Fort Smith bu declined due to its reputation for atrocities against against the kikuyu.

He therefore went further afield in search of a suitable site. He finally purchased a parcel of land at Kabete locally known as Mayombo (the rocky place) from Cege Kanyi of Muthemba family. He took possession of the site in 1901 and named it Kihuruko (a place of quietness and rest). He started teaching the Word of God and literacy. By November 1901, he had five students. The local people nicknamed him “Kabora”. It was on this land that Mary Leakey Girls High School really started.

In eary 1902, Rev. MC Gregor was joine d by Rev. Harry Leakey who continued with the work. Rev MC Gregor later moved to Weitahaga in Muranga a few montyhs after Rev. Harry Leakey arrived, He was joined by his wife Mary, thier two little girls and a companion Miss Oakes. The locals nicknamed Rev. Leakey “Giteru” because of his bush beard. They were teaching a mixed group of boys and girls. However school work among women and girls was slow at first.

In 1904 Miss Alicia Higgnbothan, a missionary from Mombasa, joned the Leakeys. She assisted in teaching catechism and also taught women who came for treatment from her tent. She taught them sewing and basic reading. In 1905, the Leakeys went on leave to England. Under Miss Higgnbothan, the girls class was slowly taking shape. The leakeys returned to Kabete in 1906 .

Many boys had come to the school by then and the first two girl pupils were sister of aboy pupil and an orphan under his care. They lived with Leakeys and became the nucleus of the schools for they attracte dmore pupils.In 1909, Mrs. Mary Leakey opened a schoolfor girls which met on the veranda of her house.

From that time, girls as boarders became a regular feature, for many came from up-country and others had run away from home for various reasons such as circumssion. Until 1921, Kabete was the only C.M.S. station with accomodation for boarders in Kikuyu County. The school however, never became regular due to intermittent illness of Mrs. Leakey.

In 1922, when Julia Leakey (her daughter) returned to Kabete after training in England as a teacher and a missionary in her own right, the school reopened on a regular basis.

TSC to get real time school attendance by all teachers through Biometric Registration

Daily School attendance by all teachers will now be monitored by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), in real time. This is after the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, announced that it will roll out the Biometric registration of all teachers in May this year. Once completed, the Commission shall then install Biometric gadgets in schools for teachers to clock in and out. Currently, teachers manually sign in and out of school.

The electronic registration of teachers will therefore expose teachers who miss lessons without written permissions. This enlisting of teachers is also expected to help the Commission to balance the teaching staff since it will unravel the imbalances across all public schools.

“We shall ensure optimal utilization of teachers and also balance areas that we shall feel are not well covered,” said Ibrahim Mumim (the TSC Director in charge of Administrative Services) on Thursday; during a stakeholders’ consultative meeting in Nairobi.

“We shall support this program in totality… we are happy that the TSC is engaging us at the beginning.. It is only a mad man who can refuse and oppose a program of this nature that is supposed to help in planning,” said Sossion.

This comes even as the Commission gives a raft of measures to curb teachers’ absenteeism. Read full details here; TSC in a move to ensure all lessons are attended by teachers

More pay for teachers, employees as TSC pays April salaries; Tax relief factored in

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has finally paid April salaries for teachers. The salaries, that usually hit teachers’ accounts from 22nd of every month, were delayed this month as the Commission waited to configure income tax in line with the new regulations.

The teachers, just like other employees in Kenya, have something to smile about as there is a marginal increase in their salaries after President Uhuru Kenyatta signed into law the Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020. The coming of this bill is part of measures instituted by the government to cushion the public against effects of the Covid-19 pandemic. Read details here; Employees to get increased salaries as President Kenyatta Assents To The Tax Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2020

In the new tax regime, employees earning less than Sh28,000 per month have been awarded a 100 per cent Pay As You Earn (Paye) tax relief. While those earning above the Sh28,000 have received a Paye tax reduction of between 30 and 25 per cent.

The new income tax bands as released by the Kenya Revenue Authority, KRA.

NDUMBERI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Ndumberi Girls’ Secondary School – former Gitao Secondary School was started on 1st March 1979. It took the name Gitao from a small stream behind Karunga Primary School where the residents of this area were getting water. It was started to cater for boys and girls from five (5) surrounding primary schools who could not get places in government aided schools.

The five primary schools whose parents contributed their money to start this school were;

1.    Karunga Primary School
2.    Kangoya Primary School
3.    Loreto Primary School
4.    Ndumberi Primary School
5.    Ting’ang’a Primary School

From the above schools, ninety (90) students were admitted on that day of 1st March 1979 as the first group to start the school. Three teachers of “A” level standard started with them.

These teachers were;

  1. Isaac Kimani – Acting Head Teacher.
  2. James Nyaga
  3. Goretti Njire

MANAGEMENT

The Headmasters of the referred primary schools were the school’s committee members, plus Chief of Ndumberi Location, one elder to represent the sponsor (A.C.K.) and one elder to represent the parents.

The office bearers were;

  1. Chairman     –     Chief John Kuria Goko (late)
  2. Secretary     –     Headmaster of Ting’ang’a Secondary School, Mr.James Gathairu Njoroge
  3. Treasurer     –     Headmaster of Karunga Primary School, Mr. James
    Mugogo Gitao

They managed the school for four (4) years.

CHALLENGES WHICH WERE THERE

  • The school had no text books for teachers, students and reference books for teachers had to be borrowed from Ting’ang’a Secondary School. Students were provided with exercise books only and they had to depend wholly on teachers. Teachers had to work very hard to provide notes and give homework on black board.
  • Two teachers had not taught before and to follow syllabus and write schemes of work was a problem to them.
  • Facilities for students – playing fields, balls, toilets, water etc. All these had to be borrowed from Karunga Primary School.

DONATIONS

The school got the following as donations;

  1. Former Education Permanent Secretary – Mr. Peter Gachathi built one class (1979 – 1980) and it can be identified by the size of windows.
  2. Municipal Council of Kiambu built one class (1980). It can also be identified by window sizes as they are small in size than other classes.
  3. Municipal Council of Kiambu roofed the present office block. (Formerly it was being built as the laboratory). Its roof had been blown off by the wind in 1981.
  4. Piped water from Kiambu – Ndumberi road through donations of Ambassador of Netherlands through Mr. Nginyo Kariuki.

NB:    It is through Harambee more classes plus the Laboratory were built.

The school did its first K.C.S.E in 1982 and by that time it had a population of 260 students both boys and girls.
