SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

gara Girls’ High School started as an Asian mixed secondary school during the colonial era in 1957. The first head of the school was Mr. Waller. Five years later, in 1962, the boys were moved to Nairobi South ‘B’ where they started the present day Highway Secondary School. The following year, 1963, which was Kenya’s year of independence, the school, being a girls’ day school, received its first lady headmistress, Mrs. Serah Joseph who served the school for only one year. She was replaced by Mrs. Reina D’Souza in 1964. It was this year when the Ominde Commission abolished the system of education in Kenyan schools based on racial lines. Ngara Girls’ High School was now open to all races. However, the school still remained under the management of Asian heads up to 1987 when Mrs. Ottaro (the first African headmistress of the school) took over from Mrs. Vimala Chaudry, the longest serving head of the school (1968-87)

For a long time, efforts were made to turn the school from a day school to a boarding school. The project took root in 1986 when classrooms that used to be for ‘A’ level tuition were renovated to make dormitories for Form Four girls. This was done after the Kenyan government had adopted the recommendations of the McKay Commission which did away with the 7-4-2-3 Educational System and adopted the present 8-4-4 system. At this time, Mrs. Macharia was the principal of the school. One factor that made it easy to turn Form Fours into boarders was because the previous principal, Mrs. Ottaro had organized for the school canteen to be renovated into a kitchen which was already serving hot lunches for the students.

Under Mrs. Macharia, parents, students and teachers embarked on various activities to raise funds to put up more boarding facilities for the students. This was done through harambee contributions, sale of raffle tickets, walks and even variety shows.

In 1996, the Community Development Trust Fund (CDTF) gave a grant and together with the parents’ contribution and money raised by the students from walks, sale of raffle tickets and variety shows, a new hostel complex was started. The phase one part of the hostel complex had two floors which managed to accommodate 372 girls after completion. These were Form 3 and 4 students. The 348 day scholars continued to waste a lot of time commuting to and from their homes. The matatu menace continued to interfere with their discipline and therefore academic performance. The boarders were also getting a lot of influence from outside through the day scholars. There was therefore one urgent need; to have all the students in the hostel so that we could concentrate on only one agenda which was to uplift the academic standards of the school. This was one of the tasks which Mrs. Josephine Mwandoe who became the new principal of the school in 2000 took in her stride.

Mrs. Mwandoe wasted no time and organized for a harambee which was held on 8th September 2001. The money collected helped to complete the two top floors of the hostel complex and 180 girls were accommodated in it leaving 168 girls out as day scholars. This was not enough. The school community wanted all the girls in the hostel.  New challenges also came up for example, the security of the students and frequent blackouts. Therefore, as parents continued digging deeper into their pockets to raise funds to put up a new hostel block, they also had to try and raise funds for the construction of a  perimeter wall round the school and for the purchase of a generator.

The new hostel block was constructed and completed in 2004. It accommodated the rest of the students who had been locked out of boarding. Ngara Girls’ High School therefore, became a full boarding school. A stone wall was constructed round the school and Securicor Company (the present day Group 4 Security) was approached to install a security alarm system in the school. The school is now under 24 hour surveillance by the company. To curb the problem of frequent blackouts, parents contributed money and a generator was bought, which goes on automatically whenever there is a blackout.

The school has a clinic which is run by a full time school nurse. This clinic is an important facility in the school because it deals with the health of the students, both mentally and physically. The clinic is fully equipped with adequate drugs and other medical tools.

The school can also boast of a computer laboratory which was opened in May 2007. This is a great inspiration to the students. The ones taking the computer lessons enjoy them very much.

Mrs Munyasya came on board in January 2009 and under her able leadership the school’s infrastructure has been renovated and both the students and staff are enjoying the change that has come. Higher academics standards have started taking root.

Mang’u High School is a top brass Kenyan National High School established in 1925. The school is located in Kiambu County along the Nairobi-Thika Highway six kilometres from Thika, Kenya. The school opened its doors for the first term, on 11 January 1940. 49 pupils reported.

In 1939, the school was moved to a new site at Mangu Village on twenty-two acres of land and because of accessibility it became known as Mangu High School. However, the Marianist Brothers introduced an Aviation programme in Mangu High School and there was an urgent need for expansion. Therefore, to create room for the Aviation programme, the Board of Governors decided to purchase a new site for the school. They acquired 214 acres six kilometres from Thika Town along the Thika-Nairobi Highway.

In 1972 the Marianist Brothers moved Mangu High School to its current site. The school was to be put up in three phases. Mangu high school was the first to introduce aviation as an examinable subject in the country School name According to Bro. Ken Thompson who taught English for 15 years at Mangu High School, mangu is a Maasai word meaning thats not me you smell. Bro. Ken said: When the Maasai hunted lions in the tall grass, they would shout mangu, mangu to inform their fellow hunters of the situation! The school is also known as Dayton (although very few students are actually aware of this) because of the schools association with University of Dayton, a Catholic university founded by the Society of Mary (the Marianists) in 1850 in Dayton, Ohio, United States.Alumni Mangu High School is a school that has made tremendous contribution to Kenyas history. The school boasts of a high profile of many successful alumni among them politicians, lawyers, businessmen, clergymen, scientists, engineers, doctors and pilots.

Among the high profile politicians who studied at Mangu High School are President Mwai Kibaki who attained the maximum possible score, former Vice-President Moody Awori, Cabinet ministers George Saitoti who was also a former vice president, John Michuki who also met President Mwai Kibaki at Mangu and is a former school captain. Other cabinet ministers are Dr Mukhisa Kituyi, Kipruto Arap Kirwa, Cyrus Jirongo and the late Tom Mboya who was one of Kenyas principal leaders that agitated for independence plus other members of parliament. Other notable alumni include Cardinal Maurice Michael Otunga, Archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki, Archbishop John Njenga who also met Mwai Kibaki and Moody Awori at Mangu and says he taught Hon. Awori catechism. Others are Bishop Antony Muheria, Josphat Konzolo former director NSSF (National Social Security Fund) and Dr. Joshua Noreh who performed Kenyas first Invitro-fertilization.

In recent times the school has continued to produce great achievers, some of whom have been ranked in the top ten nationally in the KCSE exams. Past students have been admitted into top schools in the US, UK and Australia including Yale and Harvard.Facilities The first phase of construction was completed in 1972 and all the 253 students moved in. After that, very little has been done to complete the second phase and of course nothing for the third phase, yet the student population is already in the third phase. The school has got a swimming pool, fields which are to stardards, buses which enable transport to be efficient enough, a mordern library,a block of labolatories including aviation laboratory,a chapel , staff quaters,a mordern staffroom and other facilities.

Nakuru County to host the 8th edition of Inter-County Games

Nakuru County will host this year’s edition of the Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association Games (KYISA).

Over 3,000 youth aged between 18 and 25 years will compete in more than 10 disciplines in the 8th edition of the games that will run from April 17th to 24th.

While noting that the games were not held last year following the outbreak and spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, County Chief Officer for Sports, Dr William Migwi confirmed that he had received the letter of authority to host the games from the County Assemblies Sports Association (Casa) National organizing committee.

Kwale County Government hosted the seventh and second editions of Kenya Youth Inter-County Sports Association Games while Busia hosted sixth and Nandi the fifth edition. The fourth series of the games were held in Makueni, the third in Siaya and the inaugural in Laikipia.

While speaking to members of the press in his office after a planning meeting between the County Directorate of Sports and the National KYISA Executive Committee Dr Migwi said all the 47 counties have confirmed participation in the event that will feature athletics, football, netball and volleyball.

Other disciplines that will be staged include badminton and table tennis among others. The event is also anticipated to turnaround the struggling local hospitality and tourism sectors due to a large number of visitors expected.

“The one-week event will provide a platform where national teams scout for talents to participate in the national teams. It comes at a time the County administration is investing heavily in sports,” stated Dr Migwi.

Dr Migwi said the teams to represent Nakuru County will be selected competitively in the Ward level across the region. He stated that the devolved unit has prioritized harnessing and developing skills among the youth.

“Developing sports sector is a major focus of the County administration, while keeping in mind that sports can provide youth with avenues to self-reliance.

Sports are nowadays a life changer if taken seriously. If you pursue sports as a career it will be a source of income and that is why we have heavily invested in this sector,” said the chief officer.

Dr Migwi said the county administration was increasingly tapping sports talent among the youth and will use KYISA games to advance that.

“As a county we will use these games to tap talent and we will support our youth to establish themselves,” noted Dr Migwi.

The Chief Officer also pointed out that the games will foster cohesion and patriotism in the country. “We need to use sports to build bridges of friendship and prosperity,” he added.
