KERUGOYA HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The background of Kerugoya Boys High School can be traced from the end of 1958 towards the close of the British rule in Kenya and the beginning of 1959 when the emergency period in the country ended. The current school location was initially ‘Ndia Boma Loyalist Centre” constructed in 1954 to cater for the ‘loyalists’ children in Kirinyaga County. When the Mau Mau uprisings ended and the negotiations for independence began in 1957/58 the use for this centre was no more.

Around this time, there was a greatdemand for secondary and higher education for the Africans throughout the country. This made the local African people to pressure the government to allow them to start a boy’s secondary school at Ndia Boma Loyalist Centre to make use of its existing buildings. However even being allowed, they lacked the funds and the personnel to run and maintain the school. All this time until 1960, The Boma farm had been used as a training institution, for carpentry, agriculture and masonry. The young men boarded in this centre sleeping in temporary huts built of mud walls and thatched roofs. One stone block for carpentry training was built by the boys themselves as part of practical masonry. Various crops were grown by the boys in this centre, as they learnt practical agriculture.

In I960, the Bomacentre ceased to operate and its buildings were given over to the Consolata Fathers under Fr. Cistero by the Embu county council. Bishop Carlo Maria Cavallera of Nyeri Diocese sent a Brother Brunno to start more constructions on the Boma farm site, in preparation for the start of the school. Brother Brunno built a temporary dormitory, dining room and kitchen with iron-sheet walls and roof and a cemented floor. The same Brother also built one permanent teachers’ house. In December I960 Father Tarcisius Rossi, a Cape Town South Africa B.A. graduate and an experienced education administrator joined in the preparation for the start of the school. Before joining the school, Father Rossi had served as a principal of Kamwenja Teachers’ college, in Nyeri for some time, and later as a super-visor for the C.C.M. schools in Nyeri.

The permanent carpentry building left behind by the Boma Farm, was renovated with plaster and a ceiling while the floor was cemented. The building was divided into two large rooms on both ends with three smaller rooms in between. The two large rooms would be used as a classroom and the other room as the staffroom. An indoor flush toilet was installed in the rooms in between and converted to become Fr. T. Rossi’s living house. Later the toilet was removed and the building to become a library. In January, 1961, the school began as a private boarding school for boys with thirty students, run by C.C.M, Fr. Rossi becoming its first headmaster.

The Consolata Fathers hoped to run this school as an example of a well-run institution in the country and they planned it to be wholly managed by the priests. The headmaster would also be the school’s chaplain. A large priests’ house was constructed to house about 6-9 priests who would also be teachers in the school. Government policy after independence, however, did not favour the school to remain private and the priests were therefore later to be replaced by an African headmaster In 1962, the school became government aided and in 1965 a second boarding stream was established after an impressive academic performance in the then 1964 Cambridge form four examinations. The first Board of Governors under the chairmanship of the late Hon.NjagiKibugawas constituted and officially installed in 1967.

Before this time the school was managed by Bishop Ceasar M. Gatimu. Fr Rossi left the school in 1968 and Fr. Giordano took over as the headmaster.By the early 1970’ several African teachers had joined the staff of Kerugoya Boys, they included Mr. Muiri who had started the school together with Fr. Rossi, Mr. S.N Ndungu, Mr. Anjili, Mr. Arthur Murimi, Mr. G. Wambugu and Mr. Ephraim Muriithi ( currently a member of the board )to mention a few.TheConsolata Fathers handed over leadership to the first African headmaster Mr. Francis Muiri, in January 1973, at the time the school was ranked the best in the county, in the same year Mr. Lazaro Mugo took over as chairman of the board.

A third stream was added in 1976 after the school rose to be among the best top ten in the country in the 1974 and 1975 E.A.C.E. exams registering a pass rate of 76% and 100% respectively. Due to public demand, the school was given an extra form 3 class of 40 students from harambee schools doing well in K.J.S.E and in 1978 a form one harambee class was introduced. This slightly declined the E.A.C.E performance, but the school results was still considered excellent as the school ranked 20th together with Thika High School in the country. In May, 1978, the A-level class was introduced due to excellent performance in the O-level examinations. In 1979 the school got the second African Principal from Karumandi secondary school,Mr. Tarcisius Ngariand in the same year it became four streamed.

President Kenyatta Hails Sub-County Schools For Improved KCSE Performance in 2019 exams

President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended Sub-County schools in the country for posting a remarkable improvement in this year’s Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination.

The President said the improvement is as a result of the enhanced Government investment in the education sector and backs efforts to ensure 100 percent transition from primary to secondary school education.

President Kenyatta spoke at State House on Wednesday December 18, 2019, Nairobi after being briefed on this year’s KCSE results by Education CS Prof George Magoha ahead of their release to the public.

The President commended teachers across the country especially in sub-county schools for devoting their time to give students the best they deserve, catapulting them to be top students in the country.

“My government will continue to ensure our children get quality education regardless of their location.

“Today we have seen that students who scored less than 200 marks at KCPE have posted excellent results. It is all about giving a chance to our children and availing the necessary resources” the President noted.

He similarly encouraged teachers and parents to support their children and give them hope especially those who join Sub-County day schools saying the institutions are the backbone of the 100 percent transition programme since they absorb over 70 percent of the learners.

In his briefing to the President, Prof Magoha said 127 special needs learners have excelled in this year’s KCSE and are expected to join the universities.

In this year’s KCSE results, a majority of the students who scored 200 marks and below in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) attained a mean score of C+ and above.

Present during the briefing were Education PS Dr Belio Kipsang, Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr Nancy Macharia, Acting KNEC Chief Executive Officer Dr Mercy Karogo and KNEC Chairman Dr John Onsati among others.

IbuProfen or Paracetamol? Which of the two drugs should be used by CoronaVirus patients to treat fever

The world Health Organiztion, WHO, has advised patients suffering from COVID-19 disease to stop taking IbuProfen pain killers with immediate effect. Ibuprofen pain killers are anti-inflammatory drugs used to alleviate pain. According to research in France, Anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.

But, the WHO could not give further explanation as to why usage of IbuProfen should be discontinued for CoronaVirus Patients. “We are looking into this (Side effects of IbuProfen to CoronaVirus Patients) to give further guidance. In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That’s important,” said the WHO on Tuesday.

Experts warn that Paracetamol should be used with caution since too much of it can cause severe damage to the liver.

But in a rejoinder, the WHO on Wednesday was quick to dispel assertions that usage of Ibuprofen for CoronaVirus should be discontinued. “At Present, based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend against the use of Ibuprofen,” a Presser from the WHO said.

“We are also consulting with Physicians treating COVID-19 patients and are not aware of reports of any negative effects of Ibuprofen, beyond the ;usual known side effects that limit its use in certain populations,” they added.

WHO says they are not aware of published clinical or population based data on this topic.

More than 200,000 people have now been confirmed with the coronavirus globally. At-least 83,000 people have recovered from COVID-19, while more than 8,000 have died so far. This is according to data from Johns Hopkins University in the US. Italy and France have had their highest numbers of deaths from coronavirus in a day, with the duo recording 475 and 89 more fatalities respectively.

NDURURUMO HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

In 1951 the Dutch settlers built this school to cater for the schooling of their children.  They named it JAN VAN RIEBEECK SCHOOL and it was managed by the Dutch reformed church. During the struggle for independence, the Dutch farmers relocated their families to other countries leaving the school vacant.

On 8th March 1963, the school was bought by a group of protestant churches by the name Christian Churches Educational Association (CCEA) and was renamed THOMPSON FALLS HIGH SCHOOL.  On 12th February 1964, the school was opened to cater for African students.  It was one of the first two co-educational schools in Kenya besides Nakuru High School.  It started with 25 boys and 25 girls and four missionary teachers.

The first Principal was MR. SHIMAL GMEIR.  In 1967, the first intake sat for Cambridge School Certificate examination (CSCE). In 1975, the school changed from C.C.E.A Thompson Falls to the current name NDURURUMO HIGH SCHOOL.  Since then, the school has been a co-education institution with girls and boys learning together.   In 1997, the school management changed the policy of the school so that girls and boys started learning separately with an ultimate aim of having them learn in separate compounds.

QUALITY POLICY STATEMENT:

Ndururumo High School is committed to quality teaching and learning, co-curricular activities, fostering a self-drive culture that is in tandem with the 8-4-4 goals of education with a view to producing holistic graduates prepared for a life of purpose, service, self reliance and leadership.  The school is committed to good team work, excellence and professionalism, responsibility and adaptation to change.  In order to realize this commitment, the school management will monitor and review its performance from time to time through consultancy with the ministry’s QUASO office and members of staff.
