LAKE NAIVASHA GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY
Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School is a relatively young institution. It is a public girls county boarding school. It was formally started and duly registered in 2010.I was posted here as the first principal the same year. This was after the former co-educational school Naivasha Mixed Secondary School was separated to create two independent single sex institutions. This was done to give the students a more conducive learning environment and especially to the girls who had been under-performing academically through the years. The girls had all along been considered academic dwarfs by the boys. They in turn were demoralized and intimidated by the boys who were the dominant players at a ratio of 3:1(boys: girls).I remember, for example when the 2010 form four girls went for a biology practical lesson on their own they were so excited. They told me that for the first time in four years they had had a chance to have hands on experience in a practical lesson. They were no longer spectators as had been the case previously. The separation has given the girls a chance to be active learners.
The creation of Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School has been a success and there has been a steady improvement both in academics and in discipline. Our KCSE results are a clear pointer of academic improvement. In the last KCSE exam that the girls sat for in the former Naivasha Mixed Secondary School in 2009, the girls had a mean score of 4.2 points, a D+ mean grade, with only one girl having scored a C+ mean grade. In the same year the boys registered 5.62 mean points, C mean grade with the best boy scoring a B+ mean grade. In the following year 2010, in the first KCSE exam after separation, the girls improved to 4.84 mean points, C- mean grade and in 2011 the score improved to 5.65 mean points, C mean grade. We are committed to working for continuous improvement in the spirit of our ‘motto: mbele tusonge tung’ae.’
The separation of the two schools has not been without challenges, however the wider good of the students was the higher calling and it prevailed. Lake Naivasha Girls Secondary School needs to expand its enrollment capacity in order to play its role towards the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals as envisioned in our county’s blueprint of vision 2030.As a school we are working and living out our vision ‘to be an acclaimed center of excellence in the provision of quality secondary school education to the girl child.’

The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, KCCB, has insisted that the Catholic places of worship will not be shut down due to CoronaVirus fears. According to the Bishops, the Churches will remain open so as Faithfuls can find solace and a place to run to. This goes against the Government’s directive on total shutdown of all social places and learning institutions.
“In the wake of the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Country and the world over, we are aware that there is heightened sensitivity and fear of further infections. On Sunday 8th March 2020, the Government of Kenya issued the directives on containing the spread of the virus. On Saturday 7th March 2020, we as the Bishops’ Conference had given some guidelines on how to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in our places of Worship,” Says Most Rev. Philip Anyolo who is the KCCB Chairperson.
Guidelines
In an effort to help prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, the Bishops have seen the need to give further Pastoral guidelines and precautionary measures in regard to the celebration of Holy Masses and other Liturgical activities. Here are the guidelines from the Bishops as contained in their signed memo dated March 19, 2020:
Catholic churches will remain open; they are not closing. They will be focal point of prayer, where faithfuls will find solace and strength from God.
The priests are asked to give Christ Faithful the messages of hope and encouragement. These messages touching on the Coronavirus must not create panic and anxiety, but rather, it should encourage the people to confront the current situation with serenity and courage knowing that we shall overcome the virus with the help of God.
The Holy Masses will continue to be celebrated in our churches but the Bishops’ Conference recommends that the Diocesan Bishops grant temporary dispensation from the Sunday Obligation for the next three weeks for any Faithful who may need it (c.f Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2181). However, those who are able to attend Sunday Mass may do so observing all the measures of prudence. At the same time, the Priests have asked to exercise caution in regard to large gatherings, that is, keeping the recommended distance of one metre. Priests to strictly exercise caution regarding the large gatherings. However, Masses should be brief.
Priests to be available to the Christians for Holy Communion outside the Mass, provided they do so in the Church in accordance with the Communion Rite. All Christians, especially those in restriction, are encouraged to continue benefiting from the Spiritual Communion or Communion of desire.
Those Christians who are impeded from attending Sunday Mass can also benefit from Live-streaming of celebration of Holy Mass through Televisions and Radio Stations. Catholic radios are urged to transmit live Masses.
The Bishops say there should be measures to discourage big events and Liturgical celebrations involving large gatherings of the Faithful.
In administering the Confession sacrament, the bishops discourage face-to-face confessions; and recommend that both the Confessor and the penitent should make use of the Confessionals provided within the linen device and preferably use protective masks.
For the time being, they discourage the celebration of the Masses in small Christian communities. Instead, priests can celebrate daily Masses in the main church or the Outstations for the intentions of the Christians taking into consideration one-metre distance.
On funerals, weddings, and Way of the Cross, the Bishops encourage the Priests and the Christian Communities to follow the directives given by the Government and the guidelines given by KCCB on limiting the number of participants and avoiding large crowds and common eating. They also ask for the suspension of all major National, Diocesan and Parish gatherings.
Those handling church offerings should wear protective devices, like gloves and masks where necessary.
The Bishops are asking our dear priests to celebrate Votive Masses of the Mercy of God as provided in the Sacramentary. In addition, they ask all believers to continue praying to God to end the coronavirus pandemic and pray for the quick recovery of the infected persons.
For other activities like Spiritual Programmes and Exercises, the priests should use their discretion in consultation with their Local Ordinaries and have recourse to the technology at our disposal.
Guidelines on the celebration of Sacraments and the Easter Celebrations will be given in due course.
The Bishops are asking Kenyans to keep observing the basic precautionary hygienic measures given by the Ministry of Health and KCCB that will help minimize the spread of the virus as well as protect oneself from being infected by COVID-19.

The Standard Newspaper has apologized to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, over an erroneous feature that it published about teacher interns; last week. The story caused frenzy amongst the teaching circles as it reported that the interns (who were employed late lats year) had been offered permanent and Pensionable terms.
“In our Friday’s issue of The Standard, we carried a story indicating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed 8,141 tutors on permanent and pensionable terms. We have since established that this is the number of intern teachers hired.
The Commission has, however, recruited 8,920 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms,” reads a presser by the Standard.
“TSC targeted to hire 10,300 interns and 9,069 teachers. Consequently, the commission is still processing 2,159 interns who will soon be put on payroll. Also being processed are 149 teachers to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. We apologise to the commission for the error,” the Standard added.
TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.
The Commission on Friday dismissed the report by the Standard terming it unfortunate. “It has come to my attention that the hardcopy edition of today’s Standard newspapers has reported that TSC had hired 8141 intern teachers on permanent basis. I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate. The same is being addressed,” said TSC’s Head of Communications, Beatrice Wababu.

The site on which State House Girls’ High school stands was once a European hospital. The building of the hospital consisted of the present main administration block. The sisters’ mess was the present teacher’s houses, which are adjacent to the main gate to State House.
To make room for a school in January 1954 the hospital was moved to become the present day Nairobi hospital. The school was then started and was called the New Girls’ Secondary School. What was left of the hospital acted as a European Dispensary and for some time the school and the dispensary existed side by side.
At the end of 1955 the school was split into two, New Girls’ Secondary School and Highland school in Eldoret (now called Moi Girls’ School). The whole student body together with the headmistress and some equipment moved to Eldoret.
From 1956, the new student body consisting of boys’ and girls’ was started. The school was renamed to Delamere High School – Delamere was one of most striking European Settlers in Kenya. The school continued catering for boys’ and girls’ education for about two years when in 1958, the boys moved to a new school which was called Delamere Boys’ School (now called Upper Hill High School).
For about 10 years the school was known as Delamere Girls’ School. In 1967, it assumed the name State House Road Girls’ High School which later changed to the present name State House Girls High School omitting the word “Road”.
Earlier on, in 1961 the school’s administration had come under a Board of Governors. In 1973, the school was taken over by the Kenyan Government thus becoming a fully maintained government school.
From its foundation up to the early sixties the school remained exclusively for European girls. With the approaching independence the school opened its doors to other races both in the student composition and the teaching staff.
The first two Asian Girls were admitted in form one in 1962. These were Parviz Shirin Manji (1/1/1962) and Gwaderi Shamshad (15/1/1962). Unfortunately, Parviz died one year later in late September 1963 at H.H.Aga Khan Platinum Jubilee Hospital medical ward bed number:14 from heart hemorrhage while Gwaderi cleared her O – level and went to England.
The first African girls were admitted in 1964. These were Jessica Ngoya(Jan 1964) whose father Mr. H.W. Ngoya was Webuye division educational officer and Wamaitha Margaret Philomena (September 1964). Jessica went on to become the school’s first African prefect (1965) and eventually the first African head girl of the school in June 1966. Jessica Ngoya went on to become a lecturer at the University of Addis Ababa.
The first Chinese girl was admitted in 2011. Tian Ao Zhong (22/2/2011) is from Boye Middle School, Boye County, Boarding city, Hebei province in China. The first Asian teacher came in 1966 and shortly but progressively more and more Asian and African girls joined as more Europeans left Kenya after independence.
The first African headmistress was Mrs. M. W. Maina who replaced Miss McDonald. The school has and is still open to all races in Kenya and nationalities.
Apart from human development there has been a spectacular development in physical amenities. The school has expanded, adapted and improved.
In 1983-84 through the sponsorship of His Excellency the former and 2nd President of Kenya His Excellency Hon. Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi and his spirit of Harambee the first boarding block was built where in 1985 the first 360 borders moved in. A new boarding block was added in 2004 to mark the Golden Jubilee of the school.
The school has an excellent swimming pool built in the late sixties and was first opened on Wednesday 24, July , 1968, school hall and kitchen opened in 1964 by Miss Margaret Kenyatta; the daughter to the first president of Kenya, laboratories for sciences, home science and computers.
The school also has a modern library built in 2004. Currently, the school is six streamed but because of the rising number of girls seeking to pursue their secondary education here, the school is in the process of expanding to a seven streamed school.
