How to Select Grade 10 Subjects and schools

To select Grade 10 schools and subjects under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in Kenya, Grade 9 learners should first choose a career pathway (STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science). Then, they’ll select three subject combinations within that pathway and finally, choose four schools for each combination, totaling 12 schools. To select preferred Grade 10 Schools and Subject Combinations, use the Ministry of Education portal selection.education.go.ke.

1. How you can Choose a Career Pathway:

  • Identify your interests and potential career aspirations.
  • Select one of the three pathways: STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts & Sports Science.
  • Confirm your choice to proceed with the pathway.

2. Select Subject Combinations:

  • The portal will provide you with a list of subject combinations available within your chosen pathway.
  • Choose three subject combinations that align with your interests and strengths.

3. Select Preferred Senior Schools:

  • For each subject combination, select four schools from the available clusters.
  • This ensures a diverse range of options and equal representation from different categories of schools.
  • A total of 12 schools will be selected: 4 for the first subject combination, 4 for the second, and 4 for the third.

Riara University Receives Charter

Riara University Receives Charter

On Wednesday, President William Ruto of Kenya presented a charter to Riara University during a ceremony at State House, attended by the university’s founders, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba, and other dignitaries.

The university had been operating under a Letter of Interim Authority granted by the Commission for University Education (CUE) since August 2, 2012.

Ruto praised the founders, Daniel and Eddah Gachukia, for their achievements, stating that they deserved this recognition. He expressed his happiness at being part of the university’s history, sharing that he arrived on time for the event but was informed it could not start without the Gachukias. He humorously remarked that with age, one can get away with certain things, and insisted that the event should not be delayed.

“I am very proud to have played a small role in your history by being part of this honor and signing this charter,” he said.

Ruto assured that the government would provide support to the university.

In related news, the government has allocated Sh1.56 billion to university students and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) trainees for tuition and living expenses through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), following a directive from President Ruto last Wednesday.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba. Photo/ file

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced on Tuesday, March 18, that HELB distributed the funds on Friday, March 15. He noted that 31,263 TVET trainees and 33,863 university students would benefit from this funding.

“On Friday, March 14, 2025, HELB disbursed Sh1.56 billion for tuition and upkeep. Beneficiary students and trainees have been informed of the disbursement through HELB’s official channels and advised to check their HELB portals,” Ogamba stated.

According to the Ministry of Education, this latest disbursement brings the total allocated for the 2024/2025 financial year to Sh32.7 billion. So far, 195,522 TVET trainees and 390,612 university students have received financial assistance.

Ogamba emphasized that this funding would ensure that students and trainees can continue their academic and training programs without interruption.

“This funding will meet the needs of students and trainees, allowing them to concentrate on their studies without financial worries,” he said.

He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting higher education by ensuring timely financial assistance to students and trainees pursuing their academic and training objectives.

KEMI To Offer University Degree Courses Online

The government is in the process of upgrading the Kenya Education Management Institute (KEMI) by giving it a charter to offer undergraduate, postgraduate and doctorate courses.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu confirmed that the Kenya kwanza government through the ministry of education was in the process of opening six undergraduate and a few diploma programs at the facility to enable students pursue studies at the comfort of their homes.

“Latest June this year, President Dr. William Ruto will award a charter to KEMI so that they will have a Vice Chancellor and professors who will be teaching online,” said Machogu.

The CS who graced the 7th KEMI graduation ceremony Tuesday at Jamhuri high school said that since its inception in 1981 and subsequent upgrade to a state cooperation, accepting training and research consultancy, the institution has played a critical role in continuous upscaling of education stakeholders, thereby filling the gap of human resource capacity.

Machogu encouraged the graduands to uphold national values and ethics and implement skills as well as knowledge that they have acquired from the institution.

In addition, he stated that they were in the process of providing transport services to the county directors of education and their deputies, where each of them will receive a new vehicle this year to enable them carry out the necessary monitoring and supervisory roles.

“I would also like to urge teachers to follow the ministry directives by ensuring that there is no corporal punishment to students,” said Machogu.

The CS at the same time encouraged principals and head teachers to make sure water and food in their respective schools is properly inspected to ensure they were fit for human consumption.

On his part, KEMI Chief Executive Officer Dr. Maurice Odondo said from the year 2011 to date, the institution has engaged in capacity building and improvement of managerial and competence skills of institutional managers through a diploma programme.

He stated that the programme is offered through open distance and flexible learning at county levels, supported with online mode of training, noting that since then they have equipped over 40,000 school leaders with diploma awards.

The CEO stated that they are working in collaboration with like-minded institutions in order to tap into synergy.

He said that together with the Aga khan university they are working on a programme that targets head teachers.

KEMI council chair Dr. Mercy Karogo thanked the government for funding the institution and supporting their programmes.

Explain these observations.                                                                                                              (2 mks)

Pancreatic juice containing digestive enzymes is blocked, from reaching food through

the pancreatic duct; insulin and glucagon which regulates sugar is released directly to

the Bloodstream and reaches the liver where it regulates sugar in the body;

Light; Chlorophyll;

  1. Identify two adaptations of the leaf for the process indicated by the equation above. (2mks)
  • Broad flat lamina to provide a large surface area for absorption of carbon IV oxide and sunlight;
  • The thinness of the leaf allows light and carbon IV oxide to pass through a short distance to reach the photosynthetic cells;
  • Presence of stomata ensures the efficient diffusion of carbon IV oxide to the leaf,
  • The cuticle and epidermis are transparent o allow penetration of light to the palisade cells;
  • The palisade cells contain numerous stomata and their arrangement and position next to the upper epidermis enables them to receive maximum sunlight;
