School Heads of Departments (HODs) to be trained by CEMASTEA

Thousands of secondary school teachers will be retooled in November in readiness for January senior school roll out.

The Centre for Mathematics Science and Technology in East Africa (CEMASTEA) will train STEM teachers and those with Technical subjects and are Heads of Departments (HODs) in their schools.

The first Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) cohorts will be transitioning to Grade 10 in January 2026, and teacher training is crucial to prepare for this transition.

All senior schools will offer STEM pathways. The Grade 9 learners did selection of pathways, tracks and subjects they will take in Grade 10.

The four day training will be done in counties from 24th to 27th November 2025.

TSC County Directors in memos sent to Sub County Directors want them to identify STEM HODs for the November county training.

“The National INSET will be conducted in Nakuru. The purpose of this letter therefore, is to request you to identify STEM Heads of Departments to attend the county INSET,” reads part of a memo by Nakuru TSC County Director.

Teachers to be listed for the training are HODs of Mathematics, Science (Physics, Chemistry and Biology), Applied Sciences (Computer Studies, Agriculture, Home Science), Technical Subjects (Electricity, Building and Construction, Metal Work, Power Mechanics, Woodwork, Marine and Fisheries, Aviation etc).

Already training of secondary school principals were started and around 7,000 principals got the training which were done both virtually and face to face.

CEMASTEA CEO, Jacinta Akatsa, says the training aims to build capacity of senior school STEM teachers on Competency Based Education (CBE).

“This will go a long way in the realization of the Ministry’s policy of having 60% of learners pursuing STEM education,” she said.

In senior school (Grades 10-12) learners shall take 7 subjects where 4 are core subjects; English, Kiswahili/KSL, Community Service Learning and Physical Education while 3 shall be selected from the pathways and tracks of choice.

CBC was first introduced in 2019 at Grade 3. Piloting of the curriculum was done in 2017 where in 2018 the national piloting exercise was carried out in schools across the 47 counties.

Promotions for 25,000 Teachers: MPs Gives TSC 7 Days to Address Controversies.

Promotions for 25,000 Teachers: MPs Gives TSC 7 Days to Address Controversies.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC), led by its Chief Executive Officer, Nancy Macharia, has been given seven days to explain the promotion of over 25,000 teachers.

Appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Education on Tuesday morning, Macharia and other senior TSC officials were at pains to explain the criteria used in promoting thousands of teachers across the country.

During the grilling session at the Bunge Towers, the lawmakers, led by Tinderet Member of Parliament Julius Melly, demanded to know why most teachers were stuck in the same job grade for years with no clear career progression.

The legislator also questioned why most regions received almost the same number of promotions despite varying teacher performances and staffing needs.

“We asked you why you promoted others and left others who have been going for interviews three, four and five times, you have not responded to that,” Melly stated.

“Up to now, we have yet to discuss the issues that we raised, because most of the issues we raised, we have been trying to check the documents you submitted, but we are not getting them,” he added.

While criticising TSC for laxity in carrying out its mandate, the Committee members also accused the Commission of unfair practices and immense disregard for principles of equity.

To address the matter, the Committee directed TSC bosses to come up with a comprehensive record detailing the criteria used in the promotions and explain the disparities that emerged during the process.

The Committee members gave the Commission seven days to complete the task and submit the documents to the clerk, with the MPs warning of dire consequences.

“You need to know that this Committee has equal powers to the High Court. I want to give you a final shot before this Committee cites contempt against you,” Melly warned.

He went ahead to add: “As the Committee, we are giving you just one week, and if you wish to appear in camera, you can write. The most important thing is fairness and justice for the teachers of this country.”

TSC has been on the receiving end since announcing the promotions in April this year, with education stakeholders, including teachers’ unions, accusing the Commission of bias in the process.

The promotions were carried out in two phases, beginning with 5690 teachers who served in acting capacities as head teachers and deputy head teachers, followed by 19943 in the second phase.

Addressing the press on April 2, moments after announcing the promotions, Nancy Macharia reiterated that the promotions were meant to address the long-standing stagnation in the teaching career

Latest Qualifications To Be Deployed To TTC As A Teacher

Latest Qualifications To Be Deployed To TTC As A Teacher

Being assigned to a Teacher Training College (TTC) as an instructor in Kenya is a distinguished opportunity that necessitates a strong educational foundation and specific qualifications. These roles are not solely about academic achievements; they also require enthusiasm, experience, and the capability to nurture future educators with dedication and excellence.

To be eligible, one typically needs to possess at least a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (B. Ed), ideally with a significant specialization in a subject relevant to the TTC curriculum, such as Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, or Educational Foundations. For more technical or niche courses, a Master’s Degree or further professional training may be necessary.

Teaching experience is essential. TTCs usually seek candidates who have taught in secondary schools or institutions of higher learning for several years. This experience guarantees that the teacher has practical knowledge of classroom management and curriculum application.

Moreover, candidates must be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and maintain good standing. Being TSC-registered confirms the institution of the teacher’s professional credentials and dedication to ethical teaching practices.

Soft skills are also significant. TTCs favor teachers who exhibit strong communication, mentorship skills, and leadership attributes, as they are not merely transmitting content; they are equipping student-teachers to instruct future generations. Patience, flexibility, and a sincere passion for teaching are essential traits that can make a candidate exceptional.

Therefore, while the journey to being deployed to a TTC is competitive, with the right combination of education, experience, and commitment, it’s a rewarding position that enables you to influence the future of education from the ground up.

Nyoro advocates for mathematics as a core subject in senior secondary education.

Nyoro advocates for mathematics as a core subject in senior secondary education.

The continuous nationwide debate among education stakeholders and policymakers about the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) and suggestions to make mathematics optional at the Senior Secondary School (SSS) has sparked a variety of opinions.

Some stakeholders have contended that mathematics should be a core subject in senior secondary schools, rather than an elective as suggested by the Ministry of Education.

Ndindi Nyoro, the Kiharu Member of Parliament, stated that mathematics is used in various areas of life and should be taught as a major subject until senior secondary school.

Ndindi highlighted the significance of mathematics as a core subject among students at a prize distribution ceremony at Kahuhia Girls High School in Kahuro Sub County, encouraging its ongoing inclusion in the curriculum.

He also emphasized how crucial mathematics is in providing students with necessary skills for the contemporary world, especially in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

The MP emphasized that STEM subjects are critical to innovation and global opportunities, noting that Kenya must align its educational system with these trends in order to remain competitive.

“The globe is adopting new technological advancements and digital changes. He continued, “All this requires fundamental mathematical skills, and by making the topic optional, especially in senior secondary schools, our nation cannot be left behind.”

Although he has studied the arts himself and recognizes the importance of arts education, he emphasized that mathematics and science are essential for equipping students to meet the challenges of contemporary technology.

The lawmaker also noted that mathematics is heavily used in the modern world, which is becoming more and more centered on scientific and technological developments.

To properly equip students for future challenges and opportunities, he urged policymakers and stakeholders to acknowledge this truth and keep mathematics as a core component of the curriculum alongside other sciences.
