Training: After completing the standard four years of dental school, periodontists undergo an additional two to three years of focused, advanced training in a residency program.
Focus: This specialized training gives them expertise in the anatomy, pathology, and surgical techniques related to the periodontium (the supporting tissues of the teeth).

Periodontists handle a range of issues, from moderate to severe gum disease and other complex cases that a general dentist may not be equipped to treat.

Gum Disease	Treating all stages of periodontal disease, which includes gingivitis and periodontitis. Procedures include:
	– Scaling and Root Planing (a deep cleaning to remove tartar and plaque from below the gum line).
	– Gingival Flap Surgery (or pocket reduction surgery) to clean deeply infected roots and reduce the space between the gum and tooth.
Dental Implants	Surgical placement of dental implants—artificial tooth roots—to replace missing teeth. They ensure the underlying bone and gum tissue are healthy enough for the implant.
Tissue Regeneration	Procedures to regenerate lost bone and gum tissue damaged by periodontitis, such as bone grafting and guided tissue regeneration.
Cosmetic Procedures	Addressing issues like gum recession through gum grafting (taking tissue from another area of the mouth to cover exposed roots) and crown lengthening to reshape excess gum tissue for a more aesthetic smile.

Your general dentist is like your primary care physician for oral health, handling routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, and general dental care.

They will often refer you to a periodontist if you show signs of moderate to advanced gum disease, have significant gum recession, bone loss, or require complex surgical procedures like dental implants or extensive gum grafting.
