Knec issues a statement on KCPE 2023 Wrong Results

The Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec, has issued a statement on the mistakes reported in the 2023 KCPE examinations. Some candidates observed mistakes in the results that range from wrong grading and having ‘foreign’ subjects on their results like Kenya Sign Language. Some of the schools which have contested the results include Moi Kabarak Primary School from Nakuru.

The Knec SMS Code 40054 had issues with parents and candidates waiting for many hours to receive the results.

Here is the response from Knec;

QUERIES ON THE 2023 KCPE EXAMINATION RESULTS

The Ministry of Education released the 2023 KCPE examination results for 1,406,557 on Wednesday, 23rd November 2023.

The KNEC Rules of 2015 Legal Notice 131 on the marking of examinations, release of results and certification, Rule 27, provides for candidates/schools to lodge appeals for review of the examination results to the Council in writing within thirty days from the date of release of the examination results.

In this regard, KNEC received appeals from some affected schools on dissatisfaction on their results as received by candidates/schools through the SMS code 40054.

It was brought to the attention of KNEC that results for some candidates had misalignment of the marks and grades in Kiswahili as they were placed at the Kenyan Sign Language.

There were also cases where the grades in Science and Social Studies & Religious Education were truncated incorrectly and were missing the plus (+) and minus (-) signs as expected. The error affected only the SMS results due to configuration issues, as the results in the KNEC portal are accurate. KNEC notified the SMS service provider and the error in the text messages was resolved immediately.

KNEC also received queries from candidates with low marks in some of the subjects, mainly in English and Kiswahili. KNEC has reviewed all the appeals and found that there were one hundred and thirty-three (133) candidates affected. These cases have all been addressed and results for the affected candidates updated appropriately.

KNEC has studied the KCPE examination results for a school that was widely circulated on social media forums indicating all the candidates in the school attained an identical marks of 75 in Science.

KNEC has reviewed the results for the school and all the reports that were received from the examination centres and anonymous letters and has not found any indication that the school was involved in examination malpractices.

Science is a multiple-choice question paper, thus making it possible for the candidates to get identical marks. Though this maybe assumed to be an examination irregularity, it is not adequate evidence for KNEC to sanction the results for candidates without a supporting report that cheating happened during the administration of examination.

Candidates have been advised to visit their schools and collect the official provisional results slips and raise any query for review of their results, if any, within the stipulated 30 days period.

2020 TSC Teachers Recruitment news

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has been asked to stop employing teachers on internship. The National Assembly Education Committee wants the Commission to put a break on the internship programme and focus on employing teachers on permanent and pensionable terms.

While appearing before the Committee on Wednesday January 19, 2020, TSC boss Dr. Nancy Macharia said the Commission is seeking to recruit an additional 10,000 teacher interns this year. Macharia was quick to defend the move saying their budgetary allocation from the National Treasury is stifled making it difficult for the Commission to employ teachers on permanent basis.

Here are links to the most important news portals:

According to Dr. Macharia, TSC has only 2 billion shillings for recruitment against a budget of 15.4bn Shillings.

Macharia said the Commission will also recruit 5,000 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms this year to close the teething staffing gaps; more in secondary schools. She said the 100% transition policy has overstretched the teaching work force in the country hence need for additional teachers. The TSC boss appeared before the Committee to present the Commission’s budget for the 2020/2021 financial year.

TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.

17 year old candidate delivers as 2023 National Exams get underway

A 17-year-old girl at Ung’atani Primary School in Kathozweni Sub County gave birth to a baby girl at the Makueni County Referral Hospital last night.

The standard 8 pupil gave birth in the Mother and Child section at 9 p.m. on Sunday and is said to be in good health with her baby.

“The girl is in good health, and she is sitting for mathematics paper this morning and later English and composition,” said Makueni County Director of Education (CDE) Mr. Charles Nyakundi while talking to KNA on the telephone on Monday.

Nyakundi said that the centre managers in the nine subcounties across the county have collected the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE), and the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) kicked off well without any problems.

He further added that transport arrangements, security, supervisors, and invigilators are all ready to conduct the examinations in the county.

Meanwhile, parents, teachers, and pupils in Makueni Sub County who will engage in examination malpractices will face dire consequences from the government, area Deputy County Commissioner Mr. Joel Mwangala has warned.

Mwangala gave the warning outside the Makueni County Commissioner’s office in Wote town while issuing KCPE and KPSEA examination papers to centre managers on Monday morning.

“Parents, teachers, and pupils should not try to cheat during examinations. You will find the examination is fake, there will be costs, and you risk being arrested and prosecuted,” warned Mwangala.

“This should be rebuked strongly, and we don’t want people to even try,” reiterated the administrator.

Present at the distribution container were Makueni Sub-County Director of Education Yobesh Onduso Magara and his counterpart, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Edward Dzani.

It should be observed that 26,835 and 34,794 and 30,149 candidates will sit for the KPSEA, KCPE, and KCSE examinations, respectively, in the county. Currently, languages like French and German,  besides home science, are ongoing in secondary school.

KCSE, on the other hand, begins on November 6th and runs through November 24th, 2023.
