Important Notes on Release Of Examinations Results

It is important to note the following concerning the KCSE results released by KNEC;

Examination Results Slips and Printouts

Each of the institutions that enter candidates for the KNEC examinations shall receive a hard copy of the institution’s examination results printout and result slips which captures the following information:

  • Institution’s Code and Name

This appears on the top left side of the printout. The institution’s code is a unique number by which an examination centre is identified by the Council. This is the number that an institution should always quote whenever communicating with KNEC.

  • Candidates Details

Below the institution’s name and code are details of the candidates. These details include the index number of the candidate, year of examination, gender, individual subject grades and the mean grade.

WHAT THE VARIOUS SYMBOLS ON YOUR RESULTS DENOTE

The important features of the examination results are as indicated below:-

  • X – denotes an absent candidate. A candidate is declared absent if he/she did not sit for one or all papers in the examination. However, for the KCPE examination results, the symbol AB indicates an absence;
  • Y- denotes that the candidate was involved in an examination irregularity. For the KCPE examination results, the symbol 00 indicates an irregularity;
  • P- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been pended due to infringement on the entry requirements for the examination e.g. incorrect KCPE details for entry in KCSE examination;
  • W- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been withheld on suspicion that the candidate has been involved in an examination malpractice and investigations are ongoing;
  • U- denotes ungraded examination results due to infringement of the awards criteria.

Mean Grade Award Descriptions

  • Mean grade will be X, if a candidate is absent in all subjects
  • Mean grade will be Y, if one or more subjects are cancelled.
  • Mean grade will be U, if the entry requirements for the KCSE examination are not met
  • Mean grade will be CRNM, if the course requirements for the Teacher education, Business and Technical examinations are not met
  • Mean grade will be P, if results are pended
  • Mean grade will be W, if the examination results are withheld;

The details of pended, withheld and irregularities are communicated to the institution through the Sub County Director of Education at the time of release of the examination results and are received by the institutions at the same time with the examination results.

Release Of Certificates

Once certificates for a specific examination are ready for collection/dispatch from KNEC, the institutions shall be informed through the mass and print media, Sub County Directors of Education and/or the heads of institutions.

All certificates for regular candidates are issued through the Heads of Schools/Institutions and to private candidates through the Sub County Directors of Education.
The Kenya National Examinations Council reserves the right to withdraw a certificate for amendment or for any other reason should this be necessary.
Upon the release of KCPE and KCSE examinations, the candidates can access their results through SMS number provided during the official release of results. The KCPE candidates are expected to access their result slips through the KNEC website immediately after release of the examination in their respective schools.

KERUGOYA HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

The background of Kerugoya Boys High School can be traced from the end of 1958 towards the close of the British rule in Kenya and the beginning of 1959 when the emergency period in the country ended. The current school location was initially ‘Ndia Boma Loyalist Centre” constructed in 1954 to cater for the ‘loyalists’ children in Kirinyaga County. When the Mau Mau uprisings ended and the negotiations for independence began in 1957/58 the use for this centre was no more.

Around this time, there was a greatdemand for secondary and higher education for the Africans throughout the country. This made the local African people to pressure the government to allow them to start a boy’s secondary school at Ndia Boma Loyalist Centre to make use of its existing buildings. However even being allowed, they lacked the funds and the personnel to run and maintain the school. All this time until 1960, The Boma farm had been used as a training institution, for carpentry, agriculture and masonry. The young men boarded in this centre sleeping in temporary huts built of mud walls and thatched roofs. One stone block for carpentry training was built by the boys themselves as part of practical masonry. Various crops were grown by the boys in this centre, as they learnt practical agriculture.

In I960, the Bomacentre ceased to operate and its buildings were given over to the Consolata Fathers under Fr. Cistero by the Embu county council. Bishop Carlo Maria Cavallera of Nyeri Diocese sent a Brother Brunno to start more constructions on the Boma farm site, in preparation for the start of the school. Brother Brunno built a temporary dormitory, dining room and kitchen with iron-sheet walls and roof and a cemented floor. The same Brother also built one permanent teachers’ house. In December I960 Father Tarcisius Rossi, a Cape Town South Africa B.A. graduate and an experienced education administrator joined in the preparation for the start of the school. Before joining the school, Father Rossi had served as a principal of Kamwenja Teachers’ college, in Nyeri for some time, and later as a super-visor for the C.C.M. schools in Nyeri.

The permanent carpentry building left behind by the Boma Farm, was renovated with plaster and a ceiling while the floor was cemented. The building was divided into two large rooms on both ends with three smaller rooms in between. The two large rooms would be used as a classroom and the other room as the staffroom. An indoor flush toilet was installed in the rooms in between and converted to become Fr. T. Rossi’s living house. Later the toilet was removed and the building to become a library. In January, 1961, the school began as a private boarding school for boys with thirty students, run by C.C.M, Fr. Rossi becoming its first headmaster.

The Consolata Fathers hoped to run this school as an example of a well-run institution in the country and they planned it to be wholly managed by the priests. The headmaster would also be the school’s chaplain. A large priests’ house was constructed to house about 6-9 priests who would also be teachers in the school. Government policy after independence, however, did not favour the school to remain private and the priests were therefore later to be replaced by an African headmaster In 1962, the school became government aided and in 1965 a second boarding stream was established after an impressive academic performance in the then 1964 Cambridge form four examinations. The first Board of Governors under the chairmanship of the late Hon.NjagiKibugawas constituted and officially installed in 1967.

Before this time the school was managed by Bishop Ceasar M. Gatimu. Fr Rossi left the school in 1968 and Fr. Giordano took over as the headmaster.By the early 1970’ several African teachers had joined the staff of Kerugoya Boys, they included Mr. Muiri who had started the school together with Fr. Rossi, Mr. S.N Ndungu, Mr. Anjili, Mr. Arthur Murimi, Mr. G. Wambugu and Mr. Ephraim Muriithi ( currently a member of the board )to mention a few.TheConsolata Fathers handed over leadership to the first African headmaster Mr. Francis Muiri, in January 1973, at the time the school was ranked the best in the county, in the same year Mr. Lazaro Mugo took over as chairman of the board.

A third stream was added in 1976 after the school rose to be among the best top ten in the country in the 1974 and 1975 E.A.C.E. exams registering a pass rate of 76% and 100% respectively. Due to public demand, the school was given an extra form 3 class of 40 students from harambee schools doing well in K.J.S.E and in 1978 a form one harambee class was introduced. This slightly declined the E.A.C.E performance, but the school results was still considered excellent as the school ranked 20th together with Thika High School in the country. In May, 1978, the A-level class was introduced due to excellent performance in the O-level examinations. In 1979 the school got the second African Principal from Karumandi secondary school,Mr. Tarcisius Ngariand in the same year it became four streamed.

KNEC KCSE Grading Scale – Per Subject 2022-2023

KCSE Grading Scale – Per Subject

KCSE Grading System – Per Subject; See details on KCSE Grading System – Per Subject

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) uses a grading system to evaluate the examination performance of students who sit for the KCSE exams.

Currently, KCSE results are determined by a 12-point grade system. This grade will determine the kind of tertiary institution that a student can join.

Here is a breakdown of the current KCSE grading system.

KNEC recently released the KCSE grading system they will use for the 2019 national examinations. The system is based on a numeric 12-point scale from 1-12 and an expanded letter grade ranging from A to E (A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, E).

The expanded letter grade means C+ is the ‘pass’ grade that allows students to join a public university. It is a grade most students can aim for when sitting for their exams.

Many universities and employers consider grades C to E as insignificant nowadays. A is the best grade a student can strive to get. It takes a mixture of grades A- to B- for a student to enroll in a good university.

The KCSE grading system attempts to measure the breadth or depth of learning in Kenyan schools. It also measures competence levels and quality of performance in students. In previous years, KNEC used the grading system as a standard measure of comparing students.

But this has changed since the Education Department uses it as a tool to assess learning. Students can use the system to reveal their next learning steps. For example, students who score B+ in Biology, Mathematics, and English can choose to learn medicine in university.

Although a student may sit for the national examinations, KNEC may not award the student a mean grade for several reasons. This can happen if a student does not meet the set requirements for getting a certificate. In this case, a candidate will have a grade of:

  • U – it indicates a candidate has not met the criteria for a certificate award
  • W – it indicates KNEC has withheld a candidate’s results for various reasons
  • X – it indicates a candidate was not present throughout the exams
  • Y – it indicates KNEC has canceled a candidate’s results because of irregularities
  • Z – it indicates a candidate has not met the registration requirements
SEE ALSO:  Kenya Medical Training College Job Vacancies

How the KCSE grading system works

KNEC grades candidates who sit for 7 or more KCSE subjects during the national examinations. The examinations body puts all subjects into five groups. These groups include:

  • Group I – These are compulsory subjects all students must sit for during exams. They include English (101), Kiswahili (102), and Mathematics (121).
  • Group II – The group consists of four science subjects. However, a student must sit for at least two subjects during the exams. They include Biology (231), Physics (232), Chemistry (233), and General Science (237).
  • Group III – The group consists of five humanities subjects. A student must sit for at least one subject during the exams. They include History and Government (311), Geography (312), Christian Religious Education (313), Islamic Religious Education (314), and Hindu Religious Education (315).
  • Group IV – There are eleven subjects in this group. The subjects include: Home Science (411), Art and Design (442), Agriculture (443), Woodwork (444), Metalwork (445), Building Construction (446), Power Mechanics (447), Electricity (448), Drawing and Design (449), Aviation Technology (450), and Computer Studies (451).
  • Group V – The groups consists of subjects from languages and business studies. They include French (501), German (502), Arabic (503), Kenya Sign Language (504), Music (511), and Business Studies (565).

A student can choose the seventh subject from Group II or Groups III, IV or V. To get a mean grade based on the KCSE grading system 2018, KNEC averages a student’s score in all the seven (7) subjects. The table below shows grades and marks and their corresponding points based on the current KCESE grading system.

Based on the current KCSE grading system per subject, it shows that the 2018 KCSE examinations will not be as challenging as previous ones.

A student is more likely to get a grade of A by scoring 81 or above. Had the highest numeric aggregate grade started from 80, for example, it would suggest students will find this year’s exams a bit harder.

Marking of KCE exams

During the marking of KCSE examinations, KNEC does not give candidates a percentage mark to get a particular grade. Instead, they publish KCSE grades and points to indicate the general performance of students.

The examinations body sets grades by combining expert judgment and statistics to come on an agreeable grade boundary.

Exam papers are not the same. They vary in difficulty. As such, the experts set grade boundaries to reflect the current performance of all students.

The purpose is to ensure candidates do not get lower grades just because they sat for more difficult papers than previous years’. After agreeing on grade boundaries, KNEC applies them to students’ marks to give them a grade.

KCSE examiners are teachers experienced in respective subjects. The examinations body selects them carefully and trains them before they can mark the exams.

It is essential that they use the same standards when marking the exams so that KNEC can award students the right grades.

Before schools can receive the results, senior examiners conduct final checks on all the marking. The purpose is to ensure no errors and that the standards were met during the marking of the exams.

The Kenya National Examinations Council does not use percentages in the grading system. They replace them with letter grades to create a mean grade.

Kenyan universities do not use percentages from KCSE results when enrolling students too. Instead, they use the mean grade to determine a student’s rank in the concluded exams.

This strategy means that the KCSE grading system gives a better measure of a student’s performance than the traditional marking system.
