MUTHAMBI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S BRIEF HISTORY

Muthambi Girls high school was established in 1967 by the Consolata Catholic Missionaries following the industrious initiative of Reverend Father Julius Kathure who hailed from the then Chuka Parish. The school sits on acreage of approximately twenty five (25) acres of land which is spacious ground that allows a variety of activities, facilities as well as freedom of movement for all. The land was voluntarily donated by the community members to accommodate the Muthambi Catholic church, Muthambi primary school and the girl’s secondary school. Some of the families that donated the land were Bonjiano, Edward and Josiphino Nyaga. Following the land adjudication by the government the school eventually acquired the twenty five acres of land (O.I. Josiphino: 11/6 2018) for its development.

The late, Rev.Fr. Kathure was the regional education secretary under the diocese of Meru.His great idea to construct this school was endorsed by a committee on 24th September 1966. The members of this team comprised the following;

  • Mr. Willie Bore………………..Chairman
  • Mr Batholomew ………………Vice Chairman
  • Rv.Fr. Julius Kathure…………Treasurer
  • Mr Robert Miriti…………………Hon. Secretary
  • Mr. Benjamin Baini……………..Committee member
  • Mr Gabriel Njeru…………………. ’’
  • Mr Bernard Gichunge…………… ’’
  • Mr Erastus M’Riba………………. ’’
  • Mr Edelemo Murianki…………… ’’
  • Mr Angelo Munene……………….. ’’

  • MR Alexus Njagi………………….. ’’
  • Mr Eusebio Kaburu………………. ’’
  • Mr Elisio Njogu…………………… ’’
  • Mr Fabanio Mwihandi…………… ’’

By December 1966, other fathers came in hardy to support in establishing the school namely; Rev.Fr Andrew Mungatia, Rev. Fr. Francis Mbijiwe and Rev.Fr.Iland. They all shared in the great dream starting a girl’s secondary school. In the preliminaries, Muthambi intermediate school had given ksh 1776 to support the building of the initial facilities. This great team mobilized the community to implement the ideology of Rev. Fr. Kathure which gave rise to the school in February of the following year 1967.

In establishing this prestigious girls school Fr Kathure imbibed the mission of the Consolata missionaries to evangelize and educate non-Christians all over the world. He strongly believed in the benefit of religion and education as was advocated for by the general superior of Consolata foreign missions Giuseppe Allamano (1851-1926) in his mission statement that; ‘the people will love religion because of the promise of a better life after death but education will make them happy because it will provide a better life while on earth’(Sbacchi:1998:319).

Led by the ideology of Giuseppe Allamano, Rev. Fr Kathure selflessly took keen interest in the education of the girl child by founding Muthambi Girls which he hoped would provide a better life for them. As a great initiator, Rev. Fr.Kathure mobilized the Muthambi community and shared his great dream of starting this girl’s school. He was a missionary statesman with broad humanity, deep love, resilience and vision for educating young girls. His relentless efforts gave the people of Muthambi the first impetus towards formal education for girls.

MUTHAMBI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL’S STUDENTS ENROLLMENT

The first students were enrolled to Muthambi Girls on 6th February 1967. It was a class of fourty girls admitted from all over the then Meru District. The first students to the school were selected from neighbouring primary schools; Muthambi, Munga, Kariani, Kagongo, Kamachuku, Kiini, Kajiunduthi and Kariakomo. Rev. Fr. Kathure enrolled students of all religious denominations from across the Meru region without any discrimination. The headmistress Sis Delea Assumpta was mandated by the school committee to also enrol girls from other schools out of Muthambi location so long as they had done well in the Kenya Primary Exam (K.P.E).

The pioneer students sat for their Kenya Junior Secondary Education (K.J.S.E.). Sixteen of the fourty had done very well and were to join form three safe for those that wanted to join teacher training or nursing colleges. They were examined for the following subjects;

Records show that some of the pioneer students joined St. Mary’s girls Egoji and Kaaga gilrs for form three to four, Kyeni nursing college, Chogoria mission hospital for nursing courses as well as St. Lawrence Teacher Training College in Egoji for P1 training.

As the demand for the few vacancies increased, the school became a double stream school from 1974 and has continued to grow in facilities as well as students enrolment. The development of physical facilities in the school gave room for the enrolment of a harambee stream in 1975. Students were sourced from the neighbouring primary schools in Muthambi division. These include; Muthambi,Marima, Karigini, Itara, Kagongo, Giampampo, Kiini, Kagongogaceke, Gituntu, Ndumbini, Munga, Kariakomo, Ndunguri and Kiriani. The harambee class was not sponsored by the government.

Having started as a harambee school, the first class was taken over by the government in 1969.By 1987, the school had expanded to have three O’Level streams.the First A’ level arts based class started in1980 and students sat for the KACE (Kenay Advanced Certificate of Education) exams. KACE results of 1986 were the best ever in the history of the school with eleven students qualifying to go the university. The school appeared in the papers as number sixteen nationwide following this exemplary performance. The school offered the A’ level curriculum from 1980, to 1988 after which the 7-4-2-3 system was replaced with the 8-4-4 structure. The school currently offers a curriculum for the 8-4-4 system of education since 1985.

Being a county school the catchment area of the school is Tharaka- Nithi County and the neighbouring counties. The school has an enrolment of about nine hundred and sixty students from form one to form four distributed as shown in the table below;

2021-2022 KCSE, KCPE candidates given more time to register for exams

The number of candidates registered for the national examinations has recorded an increase with a total of 1,218,892 candidates in 28,248 centres and 824,392 candidates in 10,384 centres having been registered for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations respectively by July 31, 2021.

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Prof. George Magoha said that in 2020, 1,191,616 and 752,602 candidates were registered for the KCPE and KCSE respectively. This represents an increase of 2.29 per cent and 9.54 per cent in candidature in the 2021 KCPE and KCSE respectively compared with 2020.

2021 KCSE, KCPE registration deadline extended.

In a statement to newsrooms on Monday, Prof. Magoha said that the phenomenal increase in KCSE candidature is attributed to the success of the Government’s policy of 100 per cent transition which started in 2018.

“Preparations for the 2021 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations commenced with the registration of candidates starting from June 2nd, 2021. The registration exercise was scheduled to close on July 31st, 2021,” explained Prof. Magoha.

“However, since the exercise closed on July 31st, 2021, a number of Head Teachers and Principals have requested the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to allow them more time to mop up all candidates that may not have been registered by the deadline, owing to one reason or the other, including the school movements attributed to the effects of COVID-19,” he said.

Prof. Magoha said that the Government has, therefore, decided to extend the registration deadline by two weeks in order to give an opportunity to schools to ensure all candidates are registered, in the spirit of leaving no child behind in the education sector.  Therefore, the final registration deadline is August 14, 2021.

“Head Teachers and Principals are reminded to ensure that all bona fide candidates are registered for the examination within this final two weeks. Any candidate who fails to register for the 2021 examination to be done in March 2022, will only be allowed to sit the examination in December 2022. Late registration shall not be allowed,” said the CS.

He added that the registration deadline will be followed with a verification of candidates’ registration details as captured in the 2021 KCPE and KCSE nominal rolls between August 16th and 27th, 2021.

“Head Teachers and Principals are informed that the duly signed nominal rolls, and medical reports for candidates with special needs must be submitted to Sub-County Directors of Education together with the other registration documents,” said Prof. Magoha.

The CS explained that all primary and secondary schools, both public and private, with less than  30  candidates will be hosted in schools within their proximity and locality that have more than thirty candidates as per the KNEC guidelines, while all Special Needs Schools will retain their examination centres irrespective of the number of registered candidates.

“For all examination centres with a candidature of less than 30, and which may  have legitimate hosting challenges, Sub County Directors of Education will seek  guidance from the Kenya National Examinations Council on the way forward,” said Prof. Magoha.

“All stakeholders are reminded that, to ensure equity, the Government pays examination fees for all primary and secondary school learners in both public and private schools. Schools are only required to register candidates for the examinations. Consequently, schools should not force learners to repeat,” said Prof. Magoha.

He said that the Government is committed to sustain its efforts to ensure high levels of credibility and integrity in the administration of national examinations.

TSC hardship allowance rates and areas

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, pays extra allowances (hardship allowances) to teachers working in areas classified as hardship. While classifying an area to be a hardship area, the locality must meet any of these conditions:

  • Lack of or unavailability or inaccessibility to food,
  • Inadequate transport and communication network,
  • Limited basic social services and amenities,
  • Persistent harsh climatic conditions like flooding, landslides and drought,
  • Insecurity and high possibility of security threats.

Hardship allowance is therefore paid in an effort to compensate for the cost of living for teachers working in areas designated as hardship. Like stated above, teachers working in hardship areas face a myriad of challenges; from lack of water, flooding to hostile living conditions characterized by constant spates of attacks.

Hardship allowances

In December, 2014, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission, SRC, reviewed hardship allowance to be paid at a flat rate for all equivalent grades/ job groups. The Commission effectively abolished the pegging of the hardship allowance as a percentage of basic pay.

The table below summarizes the monthly hardship allowance rates that are paid to teachers working in hardship areas; per job group:

S/NO GRADE TSC SCALE FORMER JOB GROUP Hardship Allowance- in Kshs per Month
1 B5 5 G 6,600
2 C1 6 H 8,200
3 C2 7 I 10,900
4 C3 8 J 12,300
5 C4 9 K 14,650
6 C5 10 L 17,100
7 D1 11 M 27,300
8 D2 12 N 27,300
9 D3 13 P 31,500
10 D4 14 Q 31,500
11 D5 15  R 38,100

TSC designated hardship areas.

TSC has designated various areas as hardship. The areas considered as hardship include those that are prone to terrorism, famine and aridity. As of 2012, TSC had about 38 areas approved as hardship.

Currently, teachers teaching in schools located in some parts of the following counties receive monthly hardship allowances.
