76,186 KJSEA Candidates in 6,391 Junior Schools yet to be registered

A total of 76,186 Candidates in 6,391 Junior Schools yet to be registered for the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) Exams. This worrying news has been revealed by the Kenya National Examinations Council, Knec.

Arap Moi Junior school leads with the highest number of unregistered leaners at 529. Other schools with unregistered candidates include Githurai Juniour School (377) and Eronge Adventist Boarding (332).

This comes even as the deadline for registering leaners nears.

Registration of Learners for 2025 KJSEA Exams

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) announced the commencement date for the registration of the 2025 Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) about three weeks ago.

In a statement on Thursday, February 27, KNEC CEO David Njeng’ere said the process would kick off on March 3, 2025, and close on March 28, 2025, further outlining key registration guidelines to ensure a smooth process.

Dr. David Njeng’ere who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec).
Dr. David Njeng’ere who is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec).

He emphasized that all learners in Grade 9 must be registered afresh for the assessment through the KJSEA Registration portal (cbasa.knec.ac.ke).

Njeng’ere clarified that learners already in the Grade 9 portal will not be automatically uploaded onto the KJSEA portal and must undergo a new registration process.

“All learners who are in Grade 9 must be registered afresh for the assessment through the KJSEA Registration portal, which shall be accessible from 3rd to 28th March, 2025. Learners in the Grade 9 portal shall not be automatically uploaded onto the KJSEA portal,” the statement read in part.

Requirements for KJSEA Exams Registration

To qualify for KJSEA registration, Njeng’ere noted that learners must already exist in the Grade 9 database, have a KPSEA Performance Report and have School-Based Assessment (SBA) scores for Grades 7 and 8 in all learning areas.

He also issued a strong warning against the registration of ghost candidates, stating that such malpractice could lead to serious consequences.

“Registration of ghost candidates constitutes an assessment malpractice, which attracts sanctions, including de-registration of the schools as a KNEC assessment centre,” the statement added.

Njeng’ere also urged heads of institutions to ensure the accuracy of learners’ registration data, including year of birth and citizenship.

“The Heads of Institutions must ensure the accuracy of the registration data for all learners, including the correct spelling and order of learners’ names as documented in their Birth Certificates, gender, year of birth, citizenship, and Religious Education option registered for,” the statement further read.

Additionally, KNEC has made provisions for learners with special needs and disabilities.

Njeng’ere said candidates requiring assistance will be categorized under visually impaired learners who require Braille (totally blind), visually impaired learners needing large print papers (low vision), candidates with hearing impairments and those with physical impairments.

He also stated that any requests for transfers at Grade 9 must be done online before the deadline to avoid cases of double registration.

“Any requests for transfer at Grade 9 must be done online to avoid double registration of candidates. Transfer of candidates will not be allowed after the closure of the registration portal on 28th March, 2025,” the statement read.

Equally, Njeng’ere directed that head of institutions must confirm that all SBA scores for Grades 7 and 8 are uploaded to the school portals before the deadline.

“Heads of Institutions must confirm from their school portals that the School-Based Assessment (SBA) scores for Grades 7 and 8 are uploaded for all candidates registered for KJSEA,” the statement directed.

KNEC Exams latest News: Roads assessed as KCPE, KCSE, KPSEA Exams begin

Government officials in Rachuonyo South Sub County, led by Deputy County Commissioner David Kiprop, have assessed the state of the road network leading to various schools ahead of the start of national examinations next week.

The assessment is meant to help take urgent measures to necessitate easy transportation of exam materials to exam centres next week.

DCC Kiprop called for joint efforts by both Homabay County and Kasipul Constituency National Government-Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) to fix some of the roads that are not accessible and just needed the unblocking of the water drainage system and de-siltation to make them passable.

The Chiefs’ situation report on the status of roads delivered earlier from the locations, however, shows a number of roads are in good condition except a few, like Kosele-Simbiri roads, Namba Saye-Aramo roads, and Kawaindi-Nyandiwa roads, which are inaccessible, and the team had already taken note.

The DCC said the assessment will also help to plan in advance the best routes to take or even the kind of vehicles to use in order to deliver the exam materials on time.

During the assessment, the DCC was accompanied by Lilies Wachira, the subcounty police commander; David Nate, the sub-county critical infrastructure protection unit (CIPU) commander; Lonny Rapemo, Kasipul NG-CDF chairperson; and Julius Opondo, the sub-county director for education.

TSC receives a public apology from the Standard Newspaper over the incorrect Interns’ news feature

The Standard Newspaper has apologized to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, over an erroneous feature that it published about teacher interns; last week. The story caused frenzy amongst the teaching circles as it reported that the interns (who were employed late lats year) had been offered permanent and Pensionable terms.

“In our Friday’s issue of The Standard, we carried a story indicating that the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has employed 8,141 tutors on permanent and pensionable terms. We have since established that this is the number of intern teachers hired.
The Commission has, however, recruited 8,920 teachers on permanent and pensionable terms,” reads a presser by the Standard.

“TSC targeted to hire 10,300 interns and 9,069 teachers. Consequently, the commission is still processing 2,159 interns who will soon be put on payroll. Also being processed are 149 teachers to be hired on permanent and pensionable terms. We apologise to the commission for the error,” the Standard added.

TSC kicked off the internship programme in 2019 with about 10,000 teachers enrolled on the program. An intern teacher in secondary school earns Sh15,000 per month while their primary schools’ counterparts pocket Sh10,000 per month.

The Commission on Friday dismissed the report by the Standard terming it unfortunate. “It has come to my attention that the hardcopy edition of today’s Standard newspapers has reported that TSC had hired 8141 intern teachers on permanent basis. I wish to state here that this information is incorrect and it’s unfortunate. The same is being addressed,” said TSC’s Head of Communications, Beatrice Wababu.

How did you arrive at the low pay figures for Intern Teachers?- Group of Lawyers ask TSC

A group of Lawyers has written to the Teachers Service Commission, TSC, to seek answers on the terms of engagement for the Intern teachers. The Lawyers from Mugeria, Lempaa & Kariuki Advocates want the Commission to explain how it arrived at the Sh10,000 and Sh15,000 that it intends to pay the Primary and Secondary Schools Inters; respectively.

“This letter is in relation to the contracts employing teachers in the Republic of Kenya. Specifically, we are aware that you are paying primary school teachers Kshs. 10,000 and high school teachers Kshs. 15,000,” the Lawyers wrote in a letters dated December 2, 2019 and addressed to the TSC boss Dr Nancy Macharia.

“Specifically, we would like your commission to provide to us the following information: The rationale that was used to arrive at Kshs. 10,000 and Kshs. 15,000 for primary and high school teachers respectively as remuneration,” the Lawyers added.

Also read:

The teachers’ employer is currently recruiting a total of 10,300 intern teachers who are expected to report to schools in January, 2020. The exercise was marred by low turnouts in some recruiting centres as interns stayed away citing low pay and ‘unfair’ contractual terms from TSC.

According to TSC, the intern teachers are to be employed for a contract period of one year. The Commission is not clear on whether it will then employ them on Permanent and Pensionable terms as it happened to the contracted interns in 2010.

But now, the Lawyers wants the Commission to explain Whether in arriving at the above stated amounts it consulted the Salaries and Remuneration Commission. The Lawyers wonder ‘why teachers who are as qualified as permanently employed teachers are subjected to such low salaries,’ adding that they may take legal redress on behalf of the interns.
