MOI GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL, KAMUSINGA’S BRIEF HISTORY

Moi Girls Kamusinga started as a harambee school in 1973 on Kamusinga A.C. Primary ground. The establishment was spearheaded by Reverend Jesse Okadapau, an Anglican Church Parish Vicar. The primary school classrooms were used for first batch of twenty seven students who were all day-scholars from the neighborhood.

In 1981 the government took over the running of this school. The school changed its name from CPK Kamusinga Girls to Moi Girls High School Kamusinga on 1st February 1988 when His Excellency the former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moi, visited the school and held a Harambee which helped the school to expand its land to twenty eight acres from five. He later donated a bus to the school.

The first Head Teacher was Mr. Mathias Kinanja (now deceased) before Mr. Isaac Wanyonyi took over. Mrs Mary Ndinyo took over in 1978 and headed the school up to 1992. Senior Principal Mrs. Winfrida Wanjala led the school up to 2001 when she handed it over to Mrs Waliula. After Mrs Waliula we now have Dr.Josephine Wanyama at the helm.

Moi Girls High School became a full boarding in 1993 with two streams. A third stream was started in 1993 before a fourth one was started in 1994. Currently the school has Eight streams and the population of 1228 students 52 teachers and 34 support staff.

Moi Girls’ High School Has been a Champion in Handball National champions from 2012 to date and East Africa Champions in 2013 in Gulu Uganda and 2016 In Kenya.
We appreciate the role played by the Board of Managers, the PA and the sponsors. In particular we salute the work done by our BOM Chair, Mr Julius Khakula, our sponsor Bishop Mechumo, our PA Chair Mrs Charity Wasilwa and the ICFEM for its building and construction support.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has effected the December 2019 delocalization exercise for school heads. The handing/ taking over exercise for the administrators is expected to be completed before schools open for first tern on January 6, 2020.

Those moved are heads and principals and their deputies serving in their home counties and those who have served in the same station for a long period. Also on the move are new administrators who were appointed after the just concluded interviews .

Teachers with medical conditions have been spared from the ongoing delocalization exercise. Also spared are teachers aged above 56 years and those set to retire.

The Commission kicked off the delocalization exercise in January, 2018. Other massive deployments would then follow in April, August and December of the same year. Though in April, 2019 the Commission slowed down the transfers as only a handful administrators were moved.

Teachers’ salaries: Who will save private and BOM teachers?

If you thought you are suffering due to the covid 19 pandemic as a result of the ripple effects caused by the covid 19 pandemic and you are still earning, just sit back and think of millions of Kenyans who have lost jobs or whose pay has been suspended. This is the scenario facing the teachers employed by Boards of Management (BOMs) and private schools. Days, and now months, have passed without these teachers laying sight on their salaries.

Imagine having a family to support, a myriad of basic needs to meet and to make matters worse living in a town (with no side hustle!). This is like living in hell on earth.

The last time some of these teachers earned was back in December, 2019! And with schools closed as a result of the covid 19 pandemic it has become practically impossible for school heads to meet the salary demands for the tutors plus other support staff. School management boards have since sent them on unpaid leave; until normalcy reigns.

Attempts by these teachers to have the attention of the education ministry’s cabinet secretary have been an exercise in futility. Elected leaders have turned a deaf ear on them.

GOVERNMENT FUNDS FOR VULNERABLE GROUPS

The government has been disbursing Sh1000 weekly to each family under the government cash transfer program for those identified as vulnerable. The cash is to enable them meet their basic needs during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic. There have been calls to integrate BOM and private schools’ teachers into the programme.

Going without cash for close to one year (given that the earliest schools can be reopened is September) is tricky. Someone needs to come to the aid of these teachers.

KUPPET WADES INTO BOM TEACHERS’ SALARY CIRCUS

The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has waded into the debate; asking the government to pay the over 72,000 teachers working on BOM terms.

“Since the first case of Covid19 in Kenya was announced on 13th March 2020 subsequent closure of schools on 15th March 2020, about 72,000 workforces of teachers comprising of what is commonly referred to as Board of Management (BOM) teachers lost their jobs,” says kuppet national chairman Omboko Milemba.

He wonders why the ministry of education ordered for the reimbursement of Sh720 million unused activity money that had been sent to public schools; adding that the money could have been utilized to pay salaries for staff at school level.

A screenshot showing how BOM teachers are suffering, silently.

Cash for the BOM teachers has been coming through the ministry’s fees capitation. And since the money is budgeted for, it would be prudent for the government to release the portion of the Personal Emoluments vote head to cushion the BOM staff.

Here are sampled comments on salaries for BOM and private schools’ teachers (as shared on social media);

Irony Lady: “Its so sad seeing private and BoM teachers sink into depression. November and December they weren’t paid. Reason schools closed early and salary depends on school fees. From march up to date reason salary depends on school fees and corona. Why us?”

Mayaka Zachaeus: “The situation for BOM and private school teachers is worse than COVID 19.”

Chela: “The government has neglected hardworking teachers who are under BOM and Private schools. President Uhuru Kenyatta and ministry of Education should intervene on this since they are helping a Kenya child.”

Ng’iela David:BOM as well as PTAs have employed over 500k teachers. Majority of these ,have not received salaries. We request to be included in the list of the vulnerable Kenyans. We can no longer offer our services in this country. Not even to our neighbour’s kids.”

Pius Sigei: “Mr president, kindly listen to everyone who is at distress during this Covid19 pandemic more so BOM teachers and those who teach in private schools. Please and kindly.”

F. Onyango:Mr President please mind BOM and Private school teachers. They are also booster of Kenyan economy.”

KNEC Addresses Concerns Regarding the Proposal to Eliminate Mathematics as a Mandatory Subject

KNEC Addresses Concerns Regarding the Proposal to Eliminate Mathematics as a Mandatory Subject

Kisumu – The National Examination Council (KNEC) firmly opposed the implementation of compulsory mathematics in senior high schools, clarifying that such a decision may not be in the best interest of the learners.

KNEC Chairperson Prof. Julius Nyabundi articulated this position during the opening of the second Annual Symposium on Competency-Based Assessment in Nairobi.

He noted that the mathematics curriculum at the primary and junior secondary levels is sufficient to equip students with essential learning and vital mathematical skills.

Consequently, by Grade 9, a learner will have acquired foundational arithmetic literacy that is crucial for navigating life in general.

Prof. Nyabundi elaborated that the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) is designed for learners to explore areas closely aligned with their strengths in senior school.

He cautioned that mandating all students to continue studying mathematics could impede performance, especially among those not oriented toward STEM fields.

As per KNEC Deputy Director of Quality Assurance and Archives Andrew Otieno, declining trends in examination results illustrate the significant drop in performance in mathematics from primary to secondary levels.

While over 80 percent of students achieve grades between A and D+ in mathematics at Class Eight, only 17. 46 percent attain similar results at the KCSE level.

“The decline is not attributed to the inherent difficulty of the subject. It arises from our exceedingly rigorous assessment and grading systems,” he stated, emphasizing the necessity to review all core subjects at the senior school level and suggesting that mathematics should be compulsory only for pathways related to STEM fields.

Otieno further asserted that enforcing mathematics as a compulsory subject would place art- and humanities-oriented learners at a disadvantage.

He discussed the importance of establishing a more flexible system that accommodates diverse student talents and career aspirations.

In the meantime, the introduction of mandatory community service learning and physical education subjects at the senior level was met with widespread approval.

Eunice Gachoka from the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development remarked that physical education supports holistic development, while community service encourages patriotism and civic responsibility.

This news was not received positively as previously announced, as stipulated by the Ministry of Education that compulsory subjects in senior secondary schools would only include English, Kiswahili, or Kenya Sign Language; Community Service Learning; and Physical Education.

KNEC expressed optimism regarding improvements in academic performance and the preparedness of students for a range of career options.

The Government took over the school in 1970 and posted the first headteacher Mr. Arthur Ouma.
Currently, our fantastic academic and support staff aim at molding the boys into global citizens, committed to the ideals of responsibility, self-respect, environmental awareness, leadership and, above all, the call to service. They are committed to helping students learn, achieve and contribute towards the development within our community and beyond.

Ramba was placed number 1 in Rarieda District, 3 in Siaya County, 7 in Nyanza Province and 22 Nationally among county school in the 2012 KCSE Exams, and number 62 overall nationally.

Here are Top 10 Important tips for those applying for courses:
 1. Choose your course wisely. Do not choose a school. Pursue your dream course.
 2. Opt for public universities as government sponsorship doesn’t cover private institutions.
 3. Keep your cluster points within a range of -/+ 3 compared to your desired course.
 4. Some TVET/KMTC/TTC courses might be more beneficial and high demand than certain degree programs.
 5. Ensure your selected course meets accreditation standards from relevant professional bodies.
 6. Be flexible; if you don’t qualify for one course, explore related alternatives. For example, Computer Science requires Physics, but IT doesn’t.
 7. Resist peer pressure.
 8. Avoid submitting course choices with the hope of transferring later; it’s challenging and might lead to being stuck.
 9. Obtain a national ID by August to avoid complications with government loans and funding applications.
