Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Msambweni Campus was started in 1977.  It was formerly known as “Medical Training College Matuga” until August 2006 when a need for expansion arose thereafter it was relocated to Msambweni, formerly a Leprosy centre.

The campus is about 20 kilometres from Ukunda – Lunga Lunga road adjacent to Msambweni District Hospital, one kilometre from the beach.

The Campus had been training Environment Health Sciences exclusively since the year 1977 (Certificate and in-service courses).  In 2005, the Campus started offering a three (3) year pre-service Diploma course in Environmental Health Sciences.

In 2010 Diploma in Registered Community Health Nursing and Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology were introduced.

In 2012 a satellite Campus was started at Kwale offering Diploma in Environmental Health Science as part of the expansion program. Kwale campus is about seventy (70) kilometers from Msambweni. Kwale satellite campus was given autonomy in 2015.

In March 2014 certificate in Health Records was mounted. In March 2016 Enrolled Community Nursing (beyond zero initiative) was introduced. In September 2016 Diploma in Clinical Medicine program was mounted.

The Msambweni Campus sits on 8.0 acres of land with easy access to water, electricity and transport.

Clubs, Societies and Sports

• The Environmental Club and Committee work hand in hand to ensure each new student plants and natures their tree till they finish their studies.
• Our Red Cross team participated in competition that was held at base titanium and we emerged the winners.
• In sports, we have been participating in different games from zonal level i.e. football, netball, athletic and indoor games. And in regional level we managed to take basketball ladies, athletics, and some indoor games to the national.

KMTC Kwale Campus was formerly known as Matuga Medical Training College. It was established in 1977 as a result of identified need to train Public Health Officers (PHOs).

In 1985 the then Principal Matuga Training Centre was advised by the Ministry to consider searching for a plot to construct a medical training centre which was to be funded by Government.  Upon sharing the idea with the District Development Committee, in 1998 the College was allocated a plot measuring 13.5 acres through the District Development Plot Allocation Committee.

In 1999 Kenya Medical Training College was granted an autonomous status by the Government which made the Ministry of Health shelve the initial idea of construction of the Matuga Training Centre.

In the same year the Principal shared the idea of the plot to the then Director Kenya Medical Training College and was advised to mobilize the community to take over the project of construction while Kenya Medical Training College was to provide staff, students, other learning equipment and materials.

In the year 2000, Matuga Medical Training College staff mobilized the local leaders who under the leadership of the area Member of Parliament came up with a committee known as the Kwale Medical Training College – Building Project Committee to work out modalities of developing the project.

The Chair was and is to-date Al-Hajj Kassim Zani, the Principal was and is to-date the Secretary and the area Member of Parliament being the Patron of the committee. Members come from almost all the former Districts in Coast Province.

Kenya Medical Training College – Kwale Campus project has largely been a community initiative, with support of KMTC Board of Directors and other partners/well-wishers.

Between 1977 and 2006 the Campus was being housed by the then Government Training Institute (GTI), which is now called Kenya School of Government. Towards the end of the year 2011 the KMTC – Kwale Campus Project Committee put a request to then Director Kenya Medical Training College for the Campus to start admitting students.

In September 2012, having met the requirements, the Campus admitted 41 Diploma students in Environmental Health Sciences, still under KMTC Msambweni Campus. In January 2014 the entire department of Environmental Health Sciences was moved from Msambweni Campus to Kwale Campus.

In the year 2015, KMTC – Kwale Campus gained autonomous status and delinked from KMTC-Msambweni Campus. In August 2016, the Campus was relocated to Tumbe in Msambweni Division (currently Msambweni Sub-County), which was an Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) for Tuberculosis and Leprosy diseases.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Meru Campus is situated within Meru County, approximately 242 Kilometers from Nairobi City via Embu-Maua road. The Campus is situated one kilometer off Meru town adjacent to Meru County Teaching and Referral Hospital road.

The Campus was established in 1979 as a School of Nursing and was mandated to train Kenya Enrolled Community Health Nursing (pre-service certificate) course. In 1987, the need for expansion arose and another School of Medical Engineering was established to train technicians for maintenance of medical equipment.

Initially the two schools operated independently and were drawing funds from the Ministry of Health.

Following the enactment of the Act of Parliament for KMTC, the two schools were merged in 1993 with the aim of cutting down the operational costs thus the formation of KMTC – Meru Campus.

In 1999, the Nursing department was upgraded to train Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) and the pre-service certificate course was phased- out. The department also admitted Enrolled Nurses (In-Service Certificate holders) to train and upgrade to diploma level.

In September 2006, Clinical Medicine and Surgery was introduced and in September 2008, Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences was started.

The institution has a library that is fully furnished with a wide-range of textbooks and other materials for references. A well-equipped computer lab supplements this with efficient internet connectivity that enables students and lecturers to access additional information in teaching and learning.

The Campus has a 51-seater bus and a double cabin that are always available to aid in the transportation of both students and staff.

• Bio-Medical Engineering workshops

Practical skills being core in the development of competent health professionals, our students get these skills from their respective department’s workshops namely: electronics, mechanical, clinical, electrical and Hospital Systems at Meru Teaching & Referral Hospital.

• Skills lab

Practical demonstrations and skills for Nursing and Clinical Medicine students is acquired from Campus skills lab and the Meru Teaching & Referral Hospital. Clinical experience centers for Rural and District experiences are selected carefully based on availability of training facilities, clinical instructors and at the students’ convenience.

• Medical laboratory

Practical skills for medical laboratory students are acquired from the department’s laboratory and the Meru Teaching and Referral Hospital. Clinical experience centers for Rural and District experience are selected carefully based on availability of training facilities, clinical instructors and the students’ convenience.

• Campus clinic

With the health of both students and staff being of great concern to us, the campus has a clinic that is strategically placed, manned by competent staff and stocked with drugs for treatment of minor ailments.

• Classrooms and staff offices

Currently, the Campus has 11 classrooms each with students sitting capacity of about 50.  The College also intends to construct more classrooms, staff offices including ultra- modern library cum Information Resource Centre. There are 35 staff offices.

• Students hostel

The Campus has modern hostel blocks for students.

• Students’ population

Currently, the Campus has a student population of 824 students.

• Clubs, Societies and Sports

Meru Campus participates in basketball in which ladies basketball team won the National Cup in 2014, Rugby 7’s and 14’s up to National level. For table tennis they participated in the national finals, netball, volleyball, football, badminton, handball and darts.

The Campus has the following registered clubs: Christian Union (CU), Muslim Association (MA), Seventh Day Adventist (SDA), and Young Christian Students (YCS).

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kisii Campus is situated along Kisii Hospital Road and is adjacent to the Kisii County Teaching and Referral Hospital within Kisii Central Business District in Kisii County.

Kisii Campus was started in 1958 under the colonial government to train dressers or nurse aides. In 1972 after independence, the Campus commenced the structured training of Enrolled Nurses (EN), and later in 1980 it started a certificate course for Enrolled Community Health Nurses (ECHN). In 1999, the Campus upgraded to offer Diploma in Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) with two intakes in March and September of each year.

In 2000, the Campus started offering Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery, and in September 2007, Diploma in Medical Laboratory Sciences was introduced. The training facilities have been developed by the Government of Kenya and equipment worth millions of shillings acquired to support quality training for students.

Clinical Experience Sites

Our students have their skills further developed in various practical areas, majorly the Kisii County Referral and Teaching Hospital. Other county and sub county hospitals within the country also serve this purpose, same as rural demonstration health centres identified.

Clubs, Societies and Clubs

Various sporting activities exist in the Campus as well as the infrastructure to support them. These include playing fields for football, volley ball, handball, basketball and netball. The Campus does exceptionally well in indoor games notably table tennis, badminton, chess, darts and scrabble.

We understand that physical exercise is vital during developmental milestones of both the brain and body. Therefore, we periodically organize interfaculty competition in identified sports, where the students compete amongst themselves and winners rewarded.
