KMTC Calls for Application for Pharmacy Course, Explains Why It’s the Most Marketable

Editor’s Review

With the March 2025 intake still open, KMTC is encouraging interested students to submit their applications.

The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) has issued a call for prospective students to apply for the Pharmacy course, promoting it as one of the most marketable and rewarding careers available.

In a statement released on Thursday, April 24, KMTC underscored the variety of opportunities that await graduates of the program.

The institution pointed out that pharmacy graduates can obtain positions in leading pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, and even non-governmental organizations.

“Pharmacy is one of the most marketable and rewarding careers today, offering diverse local and international opportunities.

“Graduates work in top pharmaceutical companies, hospitals, research institutions, regulatory bodies, and even NGOs,” the institution remarked.

KMTC further emphasized the crucial role pharmacy technicians have within the healthcare system, encompassing the dispensing of medication, patient guidance, and the management of administrative responsibilities.

“Pharmacy technicians play a key role in dispensing medication, offering patient guidance, and handling administrative tasks in pharmaceutical practice.

“Pharmacists also contribute to public health programs, clinical trials, health policy, insurance, and academic research, making it a dynamic and future-proof profession,” the institution added.

With the March 2025 intake still open, KMTC is encouraging interested students to submit their applications.

Detailed application information is accessible on the KUCCPS student portal at https://students. kuccps. net/programmes/search-kmtc/.

This announcement follows approximately two months after KMTC CEO Kelly Oluoch indicated that the institution is experiencing an increase in demand for its graduates in international markets, particularly in the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK).

He remarked that courses such as Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Medicine, and Medical Laboratory Sciences are currently the most in demand, with Nutrition and Dietetics also gaining popularity.

“While nursing has traditionally dominated recruitment requests, we now observe a growing interest in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Clinical Medicine, and Medical Laboratory Sciences. Other disciplines like Nutrition and Dietetics, among others, are also beginning to attract attention,” he articulated.

Oluoch attributed this demand to the escalating global need for healthcare professionals, spurred by aging populations, an increase in non-communicable diseases, and workforce shortages.

He pointed out that bilateral labor agreements between Kenya and key global partners, such as the UK and Germany, have established structured pathways for Kenyan health professionals seeking employment abroad.

“We have assigned additional staff to expedite job verification requests, ensuring that our graduates secure opportunities in a timely manner,” Oluoch concluded.

Medical Colleges Urge KUCCPS to Review Cluster System for Health Courses

Middle-level colleges providing medical courses have requested the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) to revisit the cluster system for health programs.

Speaking to the media on Saturday, March 15, the stakeholders, belonging to the Association of Medical Training Institutes of Kenya (AMTIK), urged the placement service to think about reducing the existing cluster points for medical courses to enable more students to join the programs.

While recognizing the importance of medical courses, the stakeholders, guided by their leader, Dennis Oketch, pointed out that middle-level colleges provided courses that met both local and international demands.

As stated by the Association members, just 25 percent of students who receive the Kenya Certificate of Secondary  Education (KCSE) achieve the necessary grades for medical courses, thereby hampering growth in the industry.

Online education courses

“One of the reasons why many parents do not enroll their children immediately after high school is because the learners receive low grades, such as D, D+, and D-, and these students do not have an alternative path,” mentioned one of the stakeholders.

“There are numerous medical colleges in Kenya; we wish to unite and refine the sector. We have several issues we would like to tackle, especially in colleges,” she continued.

At the press conference, the stakeholders encouraged Form Four graduates to explore courses in medical engineering and clinical medicine, as the need for experts in these areas keeps growing.

They further emphasized health records, public health, and perioperative theatre studies among the promising courses whose global demand has risen.

This proposal comes a few weeks after KUCCPS launched its portal for the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) course applications for the March 2025 intake.

KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Agnes Wahome, who addressed the audience on February 25, urged qualified Form Four graduates who took the KCSE examination from the year 2000 to 2024 to apply for positions in the medical sector.

She pointed out that KMTC had expanded the number of campuses available for popular medical courses such as Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (49 campuses), Diploma in Clinical Medicine and Surgery (30 campuses), Certificate in Community Health Assistant (47 campuses), and Certificate in Health Records and Information Technology (36 campuses).
