Minimum subject Requirements for C minus courses in KMTC

Certificate in medical engineering

To get admission in this course, you should have scored at least c- in English or Kiswahili, at least D plain in either maths, physical sciences physics and D plain in either biology, biological sciences, chemistry.

The course takes 2 years.

Certificate In community health nursing

Certificate in nursing is the most preferred among c minus courses in KMTC. Besides the c minus aggregate grade, you have to have scored at least c minus in the following subjects.

Languages (Kiswahili or English), biology or biological sciences.

At least D plus in chemistry, physics, physical sciences or mathematics. The course takes two years to complete.

Certificate in public health

To purse this course, you will need to have scored the following grades in the following subjects.

Certificate in orthopaedic and trauma medicine

1. Certificate in Medical Engineering

The Certificate in Medical Engineering is one of the best courses to do with a C- at KMTC. The course is offered at select campuses in Kenya and takes two years to complete. Of course, the overall minimum grade is C-.

Other requirements are C- in English or Kiswahili, D in Mathematics, and D- in Physics/Physical Sciences. D in any one of the following: Chemistry, Biology/Biological Sciences, Electricity, Metal Work, and Technical Drawing.

2. Certificate in Community Health Assistant

A certificate in Community Health Assistant is one of the best short C- minus courses at KMTC. It takes two years to complete and qualify; you must have achieved the minimum overall C- and other grades in specific subjects.

You must have a D+ in English or Kiswahili, D in Biology/Biological Sciences, and D in any other following: Chemistry, Physics/Physical Sciences, Agriculture, and Home Science.

3. Diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics

A diploma in Nutrition and Dietetics is among the most preferred C- minus courses at the Kenya Medical Training College. Besides the C- minus aggregate grade, you must have scored a D+ in English or Kiswahili and Biology/Biological Sciences.

Vihiga Campus opened its doors in September 2013, admitting Diploma students in Community Health Nursing. The Campus is situated at Mbale Rural Health Training Centre in Vihiga County along the Kisumu – Kakamega highway. The Campus has consistently excelled in the College Final Qualifying Examination and has since qualified five classes.

Blow to KMTC Students as HELB lacks funds for their fees

Students at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) have been denied HELB loans due to a deficit in the budget.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba informed lawmakers that the current HELB framework did not allocate funding for KMTC students.

He clarified that not all educational institutions are directly governed by the Ministry of Education.

Some institutions, such as KMTC, receive their funding through other ministries like Health.

Ogamba was present before the National Assembly’s Education and Health Committees.

He disclosed that HELB had been allocated Sh84. 5 billion for this financial year.

Nevertheless, the board requires Sh138. 5 billion to support all qualifying students.

This results in a deficit exceeding Sh54 billion.

Ogamba stated that HELB distributes funds based on information from the institutions affiliated with his ministry.

Since KMTC is under the Ministry of Health, its requirements are not automatically incorporated into HELB’s planning processes.

He pointed out that KMTC received Sh1. 2 billion from HELB in the 2022/2023 financial year.

This funding was facilitated through resources provided by the Ministry of Health.

Before that period, KMTC had received support from USAID via HELB.

From 2014 to 2019, HELB allocated Sh468 million to KMTC students with support from USAID.

Ogamba emphasized that government policy aims to assist all students in higher education.

He remarked that collaboration among ministries is essential to ensure no student is overlooked.

The CS acknowledged that the current framework restricts HELB’s capacity to assist institutions outside his jurisdiction.

He encouraged Parliament to consider a more inclusive budget approach in future plans.

Ogamba further highlighted the importance of institutions providing precise data to enable appropriate funding distributions.

Lawmakers voiced concerns that KMTC students are being unduly excluded.

They urged immediate reforms to facilitate HELB funding for all public training institutions.

The CS reassured the committee that talks were ongoing to optimize the funding processes.

He advised institutions like KMTC to collaborate closely with the Treasury and pertinent ministries.

As funding shortages continue to grow, students continue to shoulder the consequences.

The future of inclusive higher education, MPs cautioned, relies on fair funding systems.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chwele Campus is situated in Kabuchai Constituency, Bungoma County, off Bungoma/ Kimilili junction South of Sichei Mixed Boys and Girls Secondary School.

It is situated on a 29½ acre land which was procured by the Constituency Development Fund by the then area Member of Parliament Hon. Moses Wetangula and constructed with the support of the Iranian Government at a cost of Kshs. 90 million.

KMTC Chwele Campus officially opened its doors for admission of its pioneer class offering Certificate in Health Records and Information on 23^rd September, 2014 with 101 students.

In September 2017, the Campus started an Up-grading Diploma in Health Records and Information Technology. This is a two-year program which allows students who have done the certificate course to upgrade to a diploma. Admissions take place twice a year, in March and September to meet competitive demand of health workers within the country and internationally. Currently there are 250 students.

At KMTC Chwele Campus, we will assist you to apply for your dream course. We have an admissions desk officer who will guide on KMTC wide range of courses and also assist you to apply online, free of charge. At KMTC Chwele Campus the doors are open to stakeholders, the community and students to come partner, visit and learn. We believe that through fostering partnerships together we can grow to greater heights.

KMTC Kangundo Campus (Physical location, Courses, Requirements, How to apply and Contacts)

KMTC Kangundo was established as a community initiative in partnership with the KMTC Board of Directors. It was built by the Member of Parliament Kangundo Constituency (2013 – 2017) Hon. Katatha Maweu and stands on an approximated 2 acres land.

Further development has been undertaken by the current MP Hon. Fabian Kyule Muli.

The first principal was Benson Muli Munyoli Munyoli, who posted to the Campus in June 2017. The second principal, Mr. Joshua Mkoji Mwasumbo, was posted to the Campus in December 2019.

Courses

Foundation in Community Health was the first course with the first intake scheduled for March 2020. However, the process was interrupted by COVID-19 pandemic at the initial stages and had to be postponed.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kitui Campus was established in the year 2004. The Campus is 1 km away from Kitui town and is located along the Hospital road next to Kitui County Referral Hospital. The environment is very conducive for learning which makes the Campus excel academically.

Kitui Campus admitted its first class of Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) in September 2004. The Campus has since experienced exponential growth, with other programmes/courses being introduced over the years.

The community purchased 5.2 acres of land and in 2016, construction of two classrooms and an ablution block, funded by the Soin/Sigowet Constituency Fund was started.

In March 2018, KMTC posted a Principal to the Campus in preparation to admit students and also work closely with the CDF project committee. In the same year, the Campus embarked on landscaping and fencing of its premises. The Campus admitted its first class of Certificate in Orthopedics Plaster Technology in March 2019.

The Campus is located in Soin/Sigowet constituency, 35 km west of Kericho town and 30 km north-west of Kapkatet town.

The students get their clinical experience at Sigowet Sub-County Hospital, Kericho County Referral Hospital, Londiani Sub-County Hospital, Kipkelion Sub-County Hospital, Roret Sub-County Hospital, Fort Ternan Sub-County, Sosiot Sub- County and Kapkatet Sub-County Hospital.

Athletics for all students and ball games for both men and women keep students engaged and provide the much-needed break from the otherwise demanding learning activities.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Homa Bay Campus was established in 1979 to train Enrolled Community Health Nurses (ECN). In 1998, ECN was upgraded to Diploma in Community Health Nursing at the Campus. This led to the phasing out of the pre-service training for enrolled nurses in 2002 and the introduction of other programs at diploma level.

Student Population

From a class of 12 students in one certificate programme, today, the institution has more than 870 students in four different departments: Nursing, Clinical Medicine, Physiotherapy and Nutrition.

Clinical experience sites

Clinical experience sites for our students include: Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital, and other approved health facilities within and outside the county. Mission hospitals such as Kendu Bay and St. Mary’s Hospital in Mumias also provide the requisite learning facilities.

Clubs, Societies and Sports

In an effort to make an all-round health professional, KMTC HomaBay Campus will nurture your interest in service to God and humanity through various religious organizations and societies. It organizes yearly inter-denominational prayer day to bring students together.

Students sporting activities include athletics and field events, ball games such as volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, and netball. Indoor games like darts, chess, scrabble among others are also available.

Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention (ADAP) club, engages with NACADA to help our students in the fight against drug and substance abuse.
