Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Garissa Campus was started in 1980 and it is situated within Garissa town, in Garissa County. The Campus trains students from all over the country and beyond, and is instrumental in providing quality health care workers.

KMTC Garissa’s Upper Campus, which is next to Garissa County Teaching and Referral Hospital, hosts tuition and administration blocks. The Lower Campus, situated in the center of Garissa town near the GK prison, is mainly the students’ hostel.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kitui Campus was established in the year 2004. The Campus is 1 km away from Kitui town and is located along the Hospital road next to Kitui County Referral Hospital. The environment is very conducive for learning which makes the Campus excel academically.

Kitui Campus admitted its first class of Diploma in Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing (KRCHN) in September 2004. The Campus has since experienced exponential growth, with other programmes/courses being introduced over the years.

KMTC Kitui Campus is the Centre of Excellence in Family Planning and Reproductive Health.

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Nairobi Campus started in 1927 with four students at the Kenya Institute of Administration (KIA), Kabete. In 1990, it became a Semi-Autonomous Government Agency through an Act of Parliament, Cap.261, Legal Notice No. 14, Laws of Kenya.

In 1994, the name Kenya Medical Training College was adopted as a unifying title for the College. Nairobi Campus was operating under the KMTC headquarters until 2001 when it became autonomous with its own Principal.

To that end, the role of the Admissions and Records Office is to recruit, admit, and encourage enrolment of applicants who are spiritually mature, academically excellent, accomplished in extra-curricular endeavours, and broadly diverse through individualized review and professional judgment.

All applications are ONLINE from the application portal on this website www.kmtc.ac.ke.

The prospective candidates apply for admission into courses for each academic year for Regular or Parallel Category.

The Regular category have subsidized fee with optional accommodation but no choice for campus while the parallel category have non subsidized fee, no accommodation option but have option for campuses choice in more than sixty five (65) campuses situated in different parts of the country depending on the courses.

Course duration for KMTC Certificate Courses is 2 years with the exception of nursing which takes 2 ½ years. 3 years for the Diploma Courses except Community Health Nursing which lasts 3 ½ years.

KMTC Bondo Campus offers both Certificate and Diploma Courses.

Chuka Campus KMTC Minimum Entry Requirements for Certificate, Diploma, and Higher Diploma Courses

The minimum entry requirement for admissions to pursue a KMTC Certificate Course is a minimum aggregate of C- in KCSE. In addition, specific qualifications in cluster subjects will be looked into.

For Diploma Courses: a minimum mean grade of C plain (or its equivalent) in KCSE is mandatory, in addition, a combination of other subjects such as English, Kiswahili, Biology, Biological Sciences, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Physical Sciences, matters a lot.

Higher Diploma Courses require a minimum of a basic Diploma in relevant fields, and at least a minimum of two years working experience.

Kenya Medical training College (KMTC) Kisumu Campus is located in Kondele area next to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital on Kisumu-Kakamega road approximately two kilometers from Kisumu town.

It opened its doors as a formal training institution for nurses in 1953. In those early years, it catered for about 45 students out of whom less than ten qualified in a year.

Over the years, the Campus has expanded to more than 1000 students with an annual output of over 200 trained health professionals. KMTC Kisumu campus is one of the largest medical training institutions in Kisumu County.

Clinical experience sites

Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital and Kisumu County Hospital are the two main training sites for our students and are both approximately two kilometers from the Campus.

The other sites for rural experience include the Mbale, Mosoriot and Muhoroni Rural Health Training Centre.

The Campus participates in basketball, volleyball, handball, netball, football, athletics, rugby, darts, long-tennis, scrabble, chess, table-tennis, badminton and draughts at the zonal, regional and national KMTC sports competitions.

KMTC – Nakuru Campus is situated in a serene environment along Crescent Road, Milimani Estate, about one kilometer north of Nakuru town in Nakuru County.

KMTC Nakuru is constructed on a 52.6-acre piece of land which is shared with Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital.

Transport systems

The Campus has adequate means of transport for both staff and students: a 51-seater bus, a 29-seater minibus and a double cabin pickup truck.

Library

The Campus has a well-equipped modern library, which can accommodate up to 300 students, with a wide range of textbooks and other learning materials. It is also equipped with computers and internet connection to enable students conduct research and access online reference materials.

Computer Lab

The Campus has a fully equipped computer lab with strong internet connection for use by students pursuing courses within the campus.

Classrooms and staff offices

Nakuru Campus has enough classrooms for all departments. In addition, it has two well-furnished lecture theaters. There are other additional classrooms inside the Nakuru County Teaching and Referral Hospital that are used by Physiotherapy and Medical Imaging Sciences departments. There are enough staff offices for lecturers and non-teaching staff.

Students’ hostel and staff quarters

The Campus has four hostel blocks for male students with a bed capacity of 507 and six female hostel blocks with bed capacity of 484 students. We also have 69 staff houses within the Campus to make sure our students can conveniently access them for academic improvement.

Background Information

Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Kuria Campus is located in Kehancha town next to Kehancha Level four Hospital, in Kuria West Constituency, Migori County.

The Campus is a community initiative and was established as a partnership between KMTC Board of Directors and the County Government of Migori, which donated the eight- acre piece of land on which it (Campus) is built. The Campus was started in September 2015 when it admitted the first Environmental Health Sciences certificate class and was officially opened by His Excellency, the Deputy President Hon. William Ruto on 21^st November, 2015.

The KMTC Nursing Course is one of the most popular and marketable course in the field of health services and medicine. Nursing graduates from the Kenya Medical Training College, KMTC, have gained global recognition and are employed easily. A lot of nurses trained KMTC are already working in developed countries like UK and USA.

Registered Nurses work in Hospitals or outpatient facilities, where they provide hands on care to patients by administering medications, managing intravenous lines, observing and monitoring patients’ conditions, maintaining records and communicating with Doctors. Community health nurses on the other hand work within a community to support population health and create awareness on preventive health services.

What are the requirements for KMTC nursing?

Entry Requirements

To join KMTC to pursue a Certificate course, you must have a minimum of C- with specific qualifications in cluster subjects in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Examinations (KCSE). For Diploma programmes, you must have attained a minimum of C with specific qualifications in cluster subjects. Upgrading courses require that a candidate has a certificate in a respective field while for Higher Diploma programmes, candidates must have attained a Diploma course as per the following guidelines.

The following table is a summary of the requirements for courses offered:

4	Higher Diploma	Holders of basic Diploma in relevant fields and at least a minimum of two years working experience.	1 year
5	Short Courses	Individuals and groups such as corporate bodies, companies and government ministries interested in any course or courses can make a written request for arrangements to be made.	2 weeks – 3 Months

KMTC diploma in Nursing requirements (Entry).

KSCE mean grade of C plain and above.
C plain in either English or Kiswahili.
C plain in either biology or biological sciences.
C minus in chemistry, mathematics, or physics’/physical sciences.

Diploma nursing courses runs for three years. For upgrading students, the programs take 1.5 years on full time bases or 2 years if a student opts for distance learning.

KMTC certificate in Nursing requirements.

KCSE mean grade of C minus.
C minus in languages (English or Kiswahili).
C minus in biology or biological sciences.
D plus in either chemistry, mathematics or physics/physical sciences.

KMTC certificate in nursing course takes 2 years to complete. At the end, graduates are awarded with certificate in enrolled community health nursing. From here certificate holders can upgrade to diploma after registering with The Nursing Council of Kenya.

Historical Background

KMTC Mbooni is located in Mbooni Constituency – Makueni County in the Eastern region of Kenya. It was established as a community initiative led by the KMTC Board of Directors and the former Member of Parliament (Hon. Michael Kisoi Munyao) and other stakeholders. The purpose was to empower the community through training to achieve Universal Health Coverage by providing competent health care workers who could respond to not only current health issues but also emerging health problems.

The current Member of Parliament Hon. Erastus Kivasu has supported further development of the Campus through the Mbooni CDF kitty.

Construction of the Campus started in 2015 on a 5-acre piece of land and the first intake of students was in September 2019. The student population at inception was 46. The current student population stands at 94 students.

The first Principal posted to the Campus was Mr. Gabriel Kishoiyan Manyara (2015- December 2019) and Mrs. Grace Amenya is the current Principal.

Programmes and Courses

The Campus started with a Certificate in Orthopedic Trauma Medicine and a Foundation in Course in Community Health which is a short course.
