About

Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology (KWUST) is a private, women’s only Kenyan university. As a women’s only university, our main objective is to bridge the gap in gender representation in higher education as well as contributing to the social and economic development of the country.

The university was founded in 2002 and is accredited by The Commission for University Education (CUE)

ICT Infrastructure

Information Communication Technology (ICT) Infrastructure for Offering Blended Learning Kiriri Women’s University of Science and Technology has implemented a university-wide infrastructure for net-based learning and blended learning.

This strategic investment aims to increase the opportunities for students and lecturers who wish to use digital educational resources in teaching and learning. In a long-term perspective it is expected to lead to skilled and dedicated students, a stimulating working and learning environment, increased access to new educational tools and also to contribute to the University’s objective of bridging the gap in gender representation in higher education as well as contributing to the social and economic development of the country.

The Virtual Learning Platform

The university has adopted a virtual leaning platform (http://virtual.kwust.ac.ke/). This learning management system providers users with access to digital classes. These virtual courses are similar to offline classes in a lot of ways: an instructor provides an engaging educational experience through multimedia messages. The system is based on Moodle. Moodle is a learning system that is designed to offer educators, administrators and learners with a single robust, secure and integrated system to create customized learning environments.

Support

Feel free to seek assistance on any academic matter from your course lecturers. (You will meet them on the KWUST virtual learning platform) If you have forgotten your password or you are not sure about how to utilize the platform, seek assistance from the system administrators. For other administrative issues such as payment of school fees, contact the respective offices of the KWUST administration. Tel: +254 (0) 20 2042692/3 Cell: +254 (0) 736 329642 or

Education Budget reduced despite increased students’ enrollment

The budget for Kenya’s education sector is going down, even though more students are enrolling in schools, according to a report from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics.

The report says that the government’s spending on education will decrease from Sh601.5 billion in the 2023/24 financial year to Sh594.2 billion in 2024/25. Money for salaries and daily operations will drop by 1.7% to Sh566.1 billion, but spending on development projects will rise by 9.8% to Sh28.1 billion.

The report also shows that different parts of the education sector will see mixed changes in their budgets. The Teachers Service Commission’s budget will increase from Sh334.7 billion to Sh346.8 billion, with their operational costs also going up by 3.6%.

Basic Education will get Sh115.9 billion, which is a 7.1% increase from last year, making up a large portion of the development budget. However, the vocational training department will face an 8.5% cut, receiving Sh23.1 billion.

Despite these budget changes, the education sector has grown, with more schools and students. The number of basic learning institutions rose by 38.8% to 129,463 in 2024, mainly due to new junior schools. Pre-primary schools increased by 1.8% to 47,760, primary schools by 9.6% to 38,997, and secondary schools slightly to 10,755.

Technical and vocational training institutions grew by 6.9% to 2,756, and the number of universities increased from 70 to 72.

Student enrollment also went up. Pre-primary enrollment rose from 2.89 million to 2.91 million. Primary and junior school enrollment increased by 3.2% to 10.73 million, while secondary school enrollment grew by 5.2% to 4.32 million. Enrollment in vocational training jumped by 10.4% to 709,885 students. University enrollment is expected to rise from 579,000 to 629,100.

However, the number of teachers in public primary schools fell by 3.2% to 212,602 due to reasons like retirement and other factors. In contrast, the number of teachers in public secondary schools and training colleges increased to 130,818.

On funding, the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) significantly increased support for university students, with loans rising by 59.5% to Sh46.9 billion. However, funding through the Universities Fund dropped sharply from Sh30.0 billion to Sh12.9 billion.

The director of the KNBS explained that funding is changing, with students now receiving funds directly instead of universities getting tuition fees.

The report also mentioned improvements in the health sector and national security, noting a decrease in crime but a concern over the number of police officers per person.

Kiambu Institute To Be A National Polytechnic

Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology in Kiambu will be elevated to National polytechnic status as part of the government’s measures to enhance training on technical and vocational skills.

Principal Secretary, State Department for Vocational and Technical Training, Ministry of Education, Dr Margaret Mwakima, said that the Ministry is continuing with the process of upgrading the school’s status.

Speaking during the 18th graduation ceremony of the institution, the PS confirmed that plans are underway to upgrade Nine (9) TVET institutions to become National Polytechnics including Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology.

“I want to assure the school community that plans are on course to elevate the 49-year-old institution. We have already done the paperwork and things are progressing well, we are hoping that this will happen soon,” the principal said in her address.

Once KIST and the 8 other institutions including the Kenya Technical Teachers College are upgraded, the PS confirmed that the total number of National Polytechnics in Kenya will go up from 13 to 22.

The government holds that TVET institutions will be key in providing the skills and knowledge that will be required as the government steers the country towards its vision 2030 goal of being an industrialized middle-income economy.

According to Mwakima, the Ministry has also committed to training more teachers for the institutions together with upgrading equipment to modern standards.

“We now have approval to recruit 3000 trainers to address the current shortage in TVET institutions, and we have been allowed to begin with 1000 in the next financial year,” she said.

Out of the 3000 trainers to be recruited, she explained that the Ministry will be taking in 2000-degree holders and 1000 diploma holders.

The PS announcement was welcomed by members of the KIST community led by the school’s board chairperson, Dr Josiah Kamau, who urged the Ministry to fast track the process of upgrade.

He thanked the Ministry for the support saying that they had already started seeing progress as more trainers have been posted to the institution to bridge the deficit in staff numbers.

“We thank the government for hiring teachers in most faculties of learning. The school in conjunction with its partners also added 100 more teachers to reduce the workload,” Kamau said.

During the graduation, 1406 students were conferred with certificates and diplomas from various disciplines including baking technology, building and civil engineering, business entrepreneurship and social studies, electrical and electronic engineering, ICT and computer studies and hospitality.

This appears on the top left side of the printout. The institution’s code is a unique number by which an examination centre is identified by the Council. This is the number that an institution should always quote whenever communicating with KNEC.

  • Candidates Details

Below the institution’s name and code are details of the candidates. These details include the index number of the candidate, year of examination, gender, individual subject grades and the mean grade.

WHAT THE VARIOUS SYMBOLS ON YOUR RESULTS DENOTE

The important features of the examination results are as indicated below:-

  • Y- denotes that the candidate was involved in an examination irregularity. For the KCPE examination results, the symbol 00 indicates an irregularity;
  • P- denotes that the candidate’s examination results have been pended due to infringement on the entry requirements for the examination e.g. incorrect KCPE details for entry in KCSE examination;
