The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has announced a new Covid 19 enhanced medical cover for all the teachers. In a press statement dated January 6, 2021, TSC Boss Dr.Nancy Macharia reported that the teachers’employer is working tirelessly with the Ministry of Health (MoH) to provide psycho-social support to teachers that are in need of the services, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Macharia restated that teachers who are 58 years and above, and those with serious underlying conditions are encouraged to work from home. She assured them that their jobs are secure.
“If you are not able to go to school, no one will sack you. Even before Covid-19, teachers fell sick and nobody would wish to make matters worse for teachers… We have directed our county and regional directors to advise and guide the teachers whenever they come to their officers for direction,” said TSC Boss Dr. Nancy Macharia.
By Friday January 8,2021 about 92 Teachers had been placed under the Covid 19 home-based care Programme. Another 209 tutors had also been reportedly recovered under TSC’s COVID-19 medical insurance cover.
Meanwhile, teachers have been classified among the front-line workers and are set to receive the Covid-19 vaccine expected in the country in February this year. Health Chief Administrative Secretary Mercy Mwangangi reported that other professionals who will be given priority are health workers and police officers, as well as older citizens aged 58 and above.
“When the vaccine arrives, which is projected to be around end of February, teachers will be among the first beneficiaries because they are now front line workers,” Dr Mwangangi said on Thursday.
The Commission has commended teachers for the good work they are doing.

The government plans to employ an additional 24,000 teachers through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) by the end of this year, 2025. This good news has been revealed by the Basic Education Principal Secretary, PS, Julius Bitok
Speaking at the 60th anniversary celebrations of Baringo High School on May 30, 2025, Bitok stated that the latest round of recruitment will increase the number of employed teachers to 100,000 over the past two years.
“So far, we have hired 76,000 teachers across junior and senior school levels to ease the pressure brought by the new education system. We now plan to hire 24,000 more before the end of the year,” said Bitok.
Bitok added that another 16,000 teachers will be hired starting next year to fulfil the government’s five-year recruitment target.
“The government has set aside a staggering Ksh700 billion for the education sector, one of the highest allocations in the country’s history,” he added.
Moreover, the PS stated that through the new digital platform CHEMIS, over 1.2 million Grade 9 learners are expected to progress to Grade 10 without disruption.
According to the PS, the ultimate objective is to guarantee that every learner successfully transitions to the next level of education.
Additionally, the Bitok clarified why the curriculum changed from Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) to Competency-Based Education (CBE).
He went on to explain that CBE offers a broader and more inclusive education model that will redefine the education systems in Kenya.
“We are not just talking about curriculum anymore, we are talking about classrooms, teachers, assessments, labs everything that touches the student experience,” he said.
Further, he reiterated that the new system is not only progressive but also brings into focus on talent and practical ability.
Students who excel in science, sports, or the arts will be supported through the Competency-Based Education (CBE) model, which is designed to nurture them in areas where they naturally thrive.
The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) appeared before the National Assembly on May 20, 2025, where lawmakers demanded answers regarding the teacher promotion process.
The Commission cited a lack of qualified applicants in some counties which prompted it to invoke affirmative action to justify a waiver, lowering the requirement to as little as six months.
“The reduction was necessary to ensure fair opportunities for teachers in all counties, especially those in marginalized and hard-to-staff areas,” TSC explained.

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has announced new training areas for teachers. According to the Commission, teachers will be retrained on new learning areas as the Competency Based Curriculum goes into full swing.
The Teachers Service Commission has identified the special areas of training for teachers who will be involved in junior and secondary school learning.
CEO Nancy Macharia, in an advisory to the State Department of Early Learning and Basic Education on Curriculum Development, said the new content areas will enable learners to make decisions based on their interests, strengths and personalities.
Biology and Chemistry teachers will be retooled on how to handle Integrated Science and Health Science while Physics and Mathematics teachers on how to teach Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Education.
Geography, History and CRE teachers will be trained on Social Studies, according to the advisory.
Elective subjects will include Visual Arts (Fine Art, Photography), Performing Arts (Music, Dance), Home Science, Computer Science, Foreign Languages, Kenyan Sign Language and Indigenous Languages.
“The purpose of the Commission’s Advisory on the teacher preparation and requirements is to facilitate a smooth implementation of the Junior and Senior School curriculum delivery,” Dr Macharia said in the letter dated July 2021.
Dr Macharia called for the allocation of enough funds to facilitate retooling and training of teachers.
Kagumo, Kibabii and Lugari teacher colleges, the TSC suggested, should enrol students to pursue the new subjects while student admissions to universities should be informed by the new subject areas.
