IbuProfen or Paracetamol? Which of the two drugs should be used by CoronaVirus patients to treat fever

The world Health Organiztion, WHO, has advised patients suffering from COVID-19 disease to stop taking IbuProfen pain killers with immediate effect. Ibuprofen pain killers are anti-inflammatory drugs used to alleviate pain. According to research in France, Anti-inflammatory drugs could worsen effects of the virus.

But, the WHO could not give further explanation as to why usage of IbuProfen should be discontinued for CoronaVirus Patients. “We are looking into this (Side effects of IbuProfen to CoronaVirus Patients) to give further guidance. In the meantime, we recommend using rather paracetamol, and do not use ibuprofen as a self-medication. That’s important,” said the WHO on Tuesday.

Experts warn that Paracetamol should be used with caution since too much of it can cause severe damage to the liver.

But in a rejoinder, the WHO on Wednesday was quick to dispel assertions that usage of Ibuprofen for CoronaVirus should be discontinued. “At Present, based on currently available information, WHO does not recommend against the use of Ibuprofen,” a Presser from the WHO said.

“We are also consulting with Physicians treating COVID-19 patients and are not aware of reports of any negative effects of Ibuprofen, beyond the ;usual known side effects that limit its use in certain populations,” they added.

WHO says they are not aware of published clinical or population based data on this topic.

More than 200,000 people have now been confirmed with the coronavirus globally. At-least 83,000 people have recovered from COVID-19, while more than 8,000 have died so far. This is according to data from Johns Hopkins University in the US. Italy and France have had their highest numbers of deaths from coronavirus in a day, with the duo recording 475 and 89 more fatalities respectively.

No Exam irregularities in National Exams this year- PS Belio Kipsang Says

Ministry of Education State Department for Basic Education Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang on Tuesday supervised the opening of a container holding Kenya Certificate of Primary Education and Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) examination papers at the Ngong Sub-County Headquarters, Kajiado North.

Accompanied by a team of officials from the Ministry, the PS led his team to unseal and distribute examination materials, further allaying any concern about exam irregularities in the process.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency and security, setting a tone of assurance for students, parents, and educators alike.

Kipsang, who visited Ngong Township Girls and Boys Primary School, emphasised the government’s determination to secure and deliver the exams seamlessly.

In his address, the PS acknowledged the challenges posed by the unpredictable weather during the morning and the previous day when the national examinations formally commenced.

“The drizzling rain, though an unwelcome guest, failed to dampen the spirits of those gathered because they had a sense of collective purpose in the face of adversity,” the PS said.

“We are grateful that the process so far has been smooth. Monday also went well, apart from a few incidences of rain in Marsabit and some parts of Wajir County, but still, the examinations were done.” He noted.

He further noted that the government had adequately prepared and mobilised in those areas and was able to deploy helicopters to ensure that every student was able to do the examinations at the end of the day.

The PS further said that the rains were also realised in some parts of Kajiado North Sub County, but this did not affect their preparedness in ensuring that every child was able to sit for their exams.

He went on to underscore the importance of this examination in Kenya’s education sector, being the last in the 844 system and the one that will transition learners to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

“This is our last KCPE, as you are all aware, and quite a number of us have gone through the system, which has served us well as a country. The only thing we needed, as we are part of the global community, was to align ourselves with what happens across the globe so that our children benefit from mobility.

That is why we transited to CBC so that we could also build the competencies and skills that are required by our country as we move forward,” Kipsang concluded.

TSC clarifies on employment of Teachers on Permanent basis

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has come out strongly to defend claims by Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers in their nationwide strike on Monday that corruption and political influence in the employment tabled is rife.

Tharaka Nithi County TSC Director, Mohamed Gabow, while addressing the JSS teachers at TSC offices in Chuka town, Tuesday, said the Commission had a well-structured and intact merit list for employment, maintaining that employments were strictly in line with the law.

“We can assure you that we have our merit list, which is clearly listed. Once there is a vacancy, we refer to the merit list and the next person in the list is picked as a replacement,” the County TSC boss said.

Gabow assured the teachers who had marched to his office to honor the nationwide JSS teachers’ strike that he had received their memorandum, and would forward it through the regional office, to TSC headquarters.

“This matter shall be followed up. We will forward your demands to the TSC Headquarters through the regional office. That is the channel that is stipulated by law and falls within laid down procedures,” he affirmed.

The JSS National Chairperson, Edwin Osoro, who had joined the protests in Tharaka Nithi, noted that the teachers were ready to negotiate and look for a return-to-work formula, which would see over 46,000 teachers employed on permanent terms and compensated for their time working as interns.

The teachers claimed that Members of Parliament and Ministry heads, had interfered with TSC’s mandate by dishing out employment letters at public functions.

“Employment letters are being given out in public functions. If the government has money to pay those being employed through the back door, then they must have money to confirm and compensate interns. Why then would TSC say there is no money to absorb interns?” Linda Nkatha, a JSS teacher from Muthambi Sub-county wondered.

The teachers noted that the Sh17, 000 salary award, was not sufficient following the high cost of living in the country, adding that they should be compensated for the period they worked as interns.

The JSS teachers who have been serving as intern teachers for two years stated that the strike would go on until they are confirmed into permanent and pensionable terms, with their leadership asking the teachers not to report to schools as interns, as it would be deemed an illegality by the courts, which ruled the programme unlawful.

In a court ruling on April 17, 2024, Justice Bryrum Ongaya of the Employment and Labour Relations Court, stated that TSC violated the intern teachers’ right to fair labour practice, saying they should be employed to meet the optimal staffing needs in public schools.

Sat for your KCSE examination and attained the minimum University Entry Grade and have been selected to join Daystar University? Well. Congratulations for this your major achievement. Students joining Daystar University are selected by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service, KCCPS. The students are selected after doing their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE, examination and getting the minimum University entry requirement. The KCSE students must first apply to KUCCPS to be selected to preferred programmes. The students can apply at school level or apply individually during the first and second revision windows.

Once the applications are closed, KUCCPS then places the KCSE students in preferred courses depending on the student’s score, number of available vacancies against applicants among other selection criteria. In not satisfied with the University that you have been selected to join then you can apply for Inter-Institution Transfer.

Call for Transparent and Merit-Based Teacher Recruitment and Promotion Intensifies

Call for Transparent and Merit-Based Teacher Recruitment and Promotion Intensifies

Education stakeholders in Kakamega County, comprising parents and teachers, are imploring the government to prioritize merit in the recruitment, promotion, and deployment of teachers. They contend that emphasizing merit will assist in rectifying regional disparities in teacher-to-student ratios and enhance the overall quality of education throughout the nation.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has been urged to rigorously follow legal protocols during the recruitment of teachers to mitigate political interference, which many assert has increasingly obfuscated the process.

A recent promotion exercise involving 151,611 teachers ignited vigorous debates in the National Assembly. Legislators condemned the process, emphasizing concerns regarding favoritism and irregularities within the TSC.

Members of Parliament on the Education Committee highlighted that the commission appeared to favor newly appointed teachers at the expense of those with greater experience. They also remarked on the unequal allocation of promotion opportunities, with certain counties receiving significantly more than others.

According to these MPs, “teachers who scored 80 percent in interviews were promoted over those who scored 100 percent. ” They further accused TSC CEO Nancy Macharia and board chairman Jamleck Muturi of presenting false documentation, calling for a transparent reassessment of the promotion criteria.
